Horror fireball erupts after train and bus collide in Bangkok as at least 9 feared dead | World | News

At last nine people are feared to have died and more than a dozen are believed to have been injured in a crash involving a freight train and a public bus. The horror incident happened in Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, in the late afternoon near an airport rail link station in the central area. Casualty numbers were not immediately confirmed by officials, but local media have reported at least eight fatalities and around 15 injuries. One social media user claiming to be a volunteer firefighter in Thailand alleged the fatalities may be at least nine. Harrowing videos circulating online show the moment of the crash. In one of them, a line of vehicles can be seen halted at a railway crossing, before a cargo train strikes an orange bus at the front. The impact also seemed to drag several nearby vehicles along the tracks before the bus was engulfed in flames. Several motorcycles and their riders were also seen being thrown onto the road after the collision. Firefighters quickly sprayed water to bring the blaze under …

House of the Spirits author feared certain scenes would look “ridiculous”

Prime Video’s latest literary adaptation of House of the Spirits brings author Isabel Allende’s sweeping, multi-generational family saga to the screen. First published in 1982, the celebrated novel is a cornerstone of magical realism, weaving the fantastical elements into everyday life – something which Allende admits she was initially concerned could look “ridiculous” on screen. “I told them, this is very difficult to do on a screen because it looks ridiculous,” the acclaimed author told Radio Times in a recent interview. “But they did it in a very subtle way… they totally integrated it in a natural way, which was very hard to do with a film.” Magical realism – a genre that blends the supernatural into the everyday – is central to the story, particularly through the character of Clara del Valle Trueba (played by both Nicole Wallace and Dolores Fonzi). The clairvoyant matriarch predicts major events before they happen, levitates objects with her mind and communicates with the dead. Hathaway reprises her role as Andy Sachs, Miranda’s former assistant, while Tucci returns as Miranda’s right-hand man, Nigel Kipling. Israel feared Amal Khalil, just as it did Shireen Abu Akleh | Israel attacks Lebanon

Israel feared Amal Khalil, just as it did Shireen Abu Akleh | Israel attacks Lebanon

On April 22, the Israeli regime assassinated yet another journalist. Her name was Amal Khalil. She was a well-known Lebanese journalist, born during the early years of the last Israeli occupation of southern Lebanon, who spent years documenting the lives of people in the south of the country amid Israeli invasion and bombardment. Amal was well-known and beloved across Lebanon. As her brother, Ali Khalil, said at her funeral, she was present in every home. For two years, Amal received direct threats from the Israeli regime. In one interview, she recalled a call from a Mossad agent who threatened to sever her head from her shoulders if she didn’t stop reporting from the south. They knew intimate details about her life – they wanted her to know that she was being surveilled. Yet, she continued to report, knowing that any day the Israeli regime could follow through on its threats. Amal was the type of person Israel fears the most: the one who cannot be intimidated into silence, the one who cannot be sent cowering …

Southern Baptists have become what they once feared Catholics would be

Southern Baptists have become what they once feared Catholics would be

“There is no such thing as ‘separation of church and state’ in the U.S. Constitution,” the leader of the White House’s Religious Liberty Commission recently declared. Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, who sometimes preaches at Houston’s Second Baptist Church, made headlines when he made this pronouncement. It was a striking statement from a Baptist, given that Baptists have made a point of defending the fabled wall of separation since the earliest days of the American republic. In fact, in 1960, when Roman Catholic John F. Kennedy was running for president, he delivered a speech to the Greater Houston Ministerial Association, reassuring the assembled Protestant clergy, “I believe in an America where the separation of church and state is absolute.”   Why is defense of this wall, once obligatory for a Catholic politician, now abandoned by a Baptist? Within the larger story of the rise of the Religious right, this reversal highlights remarkably different political strategies deployed by large religious minorities. Catholics, viewed with suspicion by American Protestants, presented themselves as able to blend in to the American …
