Mafia Involvement Feared in Heist of Antonello Paintings in Sicily

The theft of four paintings by Renaissance master Antonello da Messina from a Sicilian museum has prompted suspicions of mafia involvement, given the startling speed and ease of the high-stakes crime, Italian authorities said on Monday.  “It’s a very, very strange affair,” Messina’s top culture official, Enzo Caruso, told Reuters, detailing the troubling circumstances: The thieves broke into the Regional Museum of Messina on the night of August 15, bypassed the museum’s alarm system, broke into security display boxes, and fled the scene with the three of five surviving panels that composed the altarpiece Polittico di San Gregorio, and a fourth, smaller painting, within a matter of minutes. It’s difficult to conceive how this is possible, he said, without intimate knowledge of the museum’s layout.  Related Articles Renato Schifani, the president of Sicily, has since confirmed that the museum’s video surveillance system and alarm were functioning properly, and guards were on site. An internal investigation is underway to determine whether any museum staff had been accomplices. Caruso noted that selling any work by an artist of …

Why the Ancient Greeks Feared the Void

Why the Ancient Greeks Feared the Void

Summary The ancient Greeks feared the void because it represented chaos and irrationality, threatening their belief in an ordered, meaningful universe. Philosophers like Parmenides and Aristotle argued against the void, believing reality must be continuous and purposeful (horror vacui). In a radical departure, Democritus and the atomists accepted the void as a necessary component for atoms to move and create reality. The fear wasn’t just physical; the void symbolized a loss of meaning, identity, and purpose in a potentially indifferent universe. This ancient anxiety persists today as we use constant distractions like social media to avoid feelings of existential emptiness. Show more   What frightens humans more…monsters or absolute nothingness? The ancient Greeks were disturbed by the notion of empty space. They had to think that the whole universe was ordered, meaningful, and structured. An entirely empty void seemed incredibly frightening because it threatened a lot more than physics. It put morality, one’s sense of identity, purpose, and the stability of existence into question. If “nothing” could actually exist, then maybe reality was not even governed by reason or harmony after all.   …

But Texans should remember why those reforms became necessary. For years, some of Wall Street’s largest financial institutions embraced Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) activism, using their enormous influence to pressure companies on political and social issues …
