Outset Co-Founder Candida Gertler Steps Down Citing Antisemitism Concerns

Candida Gertler, co-founder of the Outset Contemporary Art Fund, has stepped down from the organization’s board of trustees and all voluntary roles within UK arts institutions, according to a report by The Art Newspaper. Her resignation follows an open letter signed by over 1,100 artists and art workersa and addressed to Tate leadership ahead of the Turner Prize ceremony on December 3, calling for the museum to divest from the Zabludowicz Art Trust, Zabludowicz Art Projects, and Outset Contemporary Art Fund. The three organizations are run separately by arts philanthropists Anita and Poju Zabludowicz and Gertler. Related Articles As ARTnews‘ Angelica Villa reported earlier this week, the letter accuses the groups’ founders of being connected to Israel’s “genocidal” policies in Gaza, citing findings from the International Court of Justice and the United Nations that describe Israel’s military actions as being consistent with genocide and apartheid. Amnesty International has also labeled Israel’s policies as crimes of apartheid. The letter points to the roles of the Zabludowicz Art Trust and Outset Contemporary Art Fund in providing what activists …

In a recent Reddit post shared to the popular “Am I The A**hole?” subreddit, the mother explains that her mother-in-law was babysitting her toddler when she decided to give the child her phone to watch YouTube videos. “Our LO decided she was done and threw the phone from her high chair, cracking the screen badly. Now, we absolutely do not do this. Our LO gets maybe two hours of screen time a week, and it’s always on the TV, never a phone,” the Reddit post read. The mother then clarified that her mother-in-law has more money than she …

JB Gill and Lauren Oakley topped the leaderboard for the second week running thanks to their Viennese Waltz to “Let’s Go Fly a Kite” from Mary Poppins. Second place was tied with both Tasha Ghouri and Aljaž Škorjanec, and Sarah Hadland and Vito Coppola landing 38 points for their routines. But it was another of the remaning couples who had fans talking on social media. Chris McCausland and Dianne Buswell danced a phenomenal Quickstep to “You’re The Top” from Anything Goes, but their score of 32 (putting them first from bottom on the leaderboard) left many fans claiming the duo had been undermarked. Women’s interest in strong men adapts to environmental cues of potential threat

Women’s interest in strong men adapts to environmental cues of potential threat

Research published in the Scandinavian Journal of Psychology finds that cues to ambient darkness decrease women’s willingness to engage with physically strong men. Throughout evolutionary history, physical threats have driven humans to develop perceptual systems that identify potential dangers in the environment. When evaluating men, women in particular weigh the risks and benefits of associating with those who exhibit physical strength. Although upper body strength is typically desirable for its implications of protection and genetic fitness, its link to aggression and threat makes it ambivalent in certain situations. Mitch Brown and colleagues sought to investigate how ambient darkness—a condition associated with heightened perception of threats—affects women’s preference for strong men. Existing literature suggests that women feel a heightened sense of vulnerability in dark environments, which may alter how they perceive social targets. Darkness is associated with both uncertainty and an increased readiness to detect social threats. Thus, the researchers hypothesized that women might be less willing to engage with strong men in dark settings, given the potential costs associated with formidable men in ambiguous environments. …

The Future of the Executive Branch

The Future of the Executive Branch

The Trump administration has plans to overhaul the federal government—but how will the president-elect and his allies actually bring about this radical change? Courtesy of Washington Week With The Atlantic November 30, 2024, 11:23 AM ET Editor’s Note: Washington Week With The Atlantic is a partnership between NewsHour Productions, WETA, and The Atlantic airing every Friday on PBS stations nationwide. Check your local listings or watch full episodes here. Although how the country is going to change after Donald Trump takes office remains uncertain, it’s clear that he will be one of the most powerful—and emboldened—U.S. presidents. On Washington Week With The Atlantic, panelists joined Jeffrey Goldberg to discuss how Americans could react to Trump’s changes. Trump and his allies have plans to overhaul the federal government, and the president-elect has nominated loyalists to key Cabinet positions to further this agenda. On this front, Trump has two major things in mind, Dan Balz explained last night: transforming how the executive branch works and significantly cutting spending across various federal agencies. “He has his eyes on …

The Appall | Jorie Graham

Jorie Graham’s poem in our December 5, 2024, issue begins: The Killing Spree whizzed past, we liked the look of it, it liquefieddeath, it was here to stay, it actuallyhad nowhere else to go, was in its last stages now, longed to berevelation, longed to be part ofnature making itswhistling sounds above, itsscreamingbelow. The classrooms exploded. The bits of desks lay aboutin the dust-filled amnesia. . . . In her decades-long career, Graham has written many such poems examining the devastating conditions of the world. “I have felt the requirement to show up, set an example, bear witness all my life,” she told me over e-mail this week. “It feels like a spiritual requirement as much as a political one. I believe poetry asks as much of one, by other means.”  Graham’s poetry often draws from her life—in the sense that experience, too, is “forever probing, tentative, anticipatory, and open-ended,” as Helen Vendler wrote in a chapter about Graham from her book The Given and the Made. Graham has written, for example, about the Parisian student protests in May …

Man Renovates Decommissioned Missile Silo Into Delightful Airbnb, Attracts “Swingers”

“I’m not a full doomsday prepper, but I like the idea of being prepared for the unknown.” Doomsdairbnb A man in Arkansas turned a decommissioned missile silo into a lavish short-term rental property. But whether it was a wise long-term investment remains to be seen. As owner GT Hill tells Business Insider, he bought the silo for $90,000 in 2010, and then spent a whopping $800,000 over ten years to convert the space into a unique rental experience. “Probably 20 percent of my interest was in the doomsday prepper aspect or the idea of preparing to survive in the case of a catastrophe,” Hill wrote. “I’m not a full doomsday prepper, but I like the idea of being prepared for the unknown, including having food storage and some survival skills.” The end product, dubbed Titan II, is a 3500-square-foot living space located in the middle of a 200-acre ranch and 150 feet below the ground. Hill says it’s already hosted famous YouTubers, bands, birthday parties, and “even some swingers.” And in case the end of the …

Groundbreaking “hate universe” study reveals links to billions in mainstream communities

Groundbreaking “hate universe” study reveals links to billions in mainstream communities

Online hate communities are not confined to isolated corners of the internet. In a new study published in npj Complexity shows how these groups are increasingly intersecting with mainstream online spaces. Using advanced tools to map the online “hate universe,” researchers found that around 50 million accounts in hate communities grew closer not only to each other but also to a broad mainstream audience of billions in the weeks surrounding the 2020 United States presidential election. The rapid evolution of online hate speech has created a pressing need for a deeper understanding of how it spreads, adapts, and impacts broader online communities. While previous research has examined the relationship between real-world events and the proliferation of hate speech, much of it treated hate groups as isolated entities or focused on single platforms. This fragmented approach left a gap in understanding how hate networks function across multiple platforms and how they interact with mainstream communities. The new study addressed this gap by mapping the “hate universe” at an unprecedented scale and resolution. “We hear a lot …

Gregg Wallace: Law firm to investigate allegations against MasterChef presenter | UK News

The production company that makes MasterChef has appointed a City law firm to lead the investigation into alleged misconduct by presenter Gregg Wallace. Banijay UK, the company that makes the programme, on Saturday said it had appointed Lewis Silkin to lead an investigation and called for anyone else wishing to raise concerns to contact the law firm’s team. “Lewis Silkin is a major City law firm with a highly experienced specialist investigations team which has overseen a broad range of high-profile workplace investigations,” it said. “Banijay UK has been impressed by the firm’s rigorous, in-depth, and impartial analysis and reporting.” A spokesperson added: “All information will be handled sensitively, and names of those providing evidence to the team will be kept confidential.” Wallace has been a presenter on the programme since 2005, as well as its spin-offs Celebrity MasterChef and MasterChef: The Professionals.
