Trump admin cut down 430 trees at DC golf course renovation site, court docs confirm

Claim: Last weekend, U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration chopped down 430 trees and planned to cut down hundreds more from East Potomac Park in Washington, D.C., the same site where Trump plans to renovate a golf course, court documents confirm. Rating: This week, Snopes received emails and searches from readers asking if U.S. President Donald Trump’s administration chopped down 430 trees last weekend at East Potomac Park in Washington, D.C., the same site where Trump planned to renovate the East Potomac Golf Links property. Earlier this year, the Trump administration revealed visual plans to overhaul the property into a championship-style golf course. Then, Trump announced on Truth Social that work on the golf course would begin in September. The DC Preservation League filed a lawsuit challenging the project, with District Court Judge Ana Reyes presiding over the case. One reader asked us via email, “Did the Trump administration order removal of 430 trees from the East Potomac Golf Links?” People shared the claim on Bluesky (archived), Facebook (archived), Threads (archived) and other social media platforms. …

Moncler’s New Re/Icons Campaign Stars Cher, Jennie and Grace Jones

Moncler’s New Re/Icons Campaign Stars Cher, Jennie and Grace Jones

Moncler minted a trio of icons by drafting Cher, Grace Jones and Jennie to star in a new campaign to promote the luxury fashion house’s new Re/Icons collection. The range, which debuted this week, pulls styles from Moncler’s archives and reimagines the pieces for a new generation in a campaign that has more ties to the brand’s history as it was inspired by archival photography of early Moncler collaborator Lionel Terray, a French mountain climber. But beyond icon status, Moncler praises its three leading ladies as pioneers. In a preview clip of the campaign, Moncler states, “Pioneers: Those first to explore, so that others can follow,” and that spirit flows through the launch announcement. “Pioneering spirit is just going forward and being tough. Pioneers were tough. It’s going and not giving up and being thankful,” said Cher in a statement. “My most extraordinary dream is to keep discovering different versions of myself that I haven’t met yet,” offered Jennie, who rose to superstar status as one of the members of Blackpink. “To keep creating freely, …

North America’s oldest human footprints tell a tale of ice age chaos

North America’s oldest human footprints tell a tale of ice age chaos

An extensive new analysis further confirms the oldest known human footprints in North America date back to the last ice age (about 23,500–21,700 years). To pinpoint their origins, researchers at the University of Arizona relied on cutting-edge methods at the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Radiocarbon Laboratory to examine hundreds of thousands of prehistoric pollen grains extracted from the tracks. According to researchers writing this week in the journal Science Advances, the team can even describe some of the dramatic environmental fluctuations experienced by these prehistoric humans within a single generation. New Mexico’s White Sands National Park contains more than stunning vistas and desert dunes. It’s also home to one of the most controversial (and consequential) prehistoric discoveries of the last century. In 2006, archaeologists located footprints inside a dry lakebed that they later determined to be the earliest evidence of humans in North America. But there was a problem. Until then, researchers largely agreed that the first humans migrated into the continent about 16,000–12,000 years ago via Beringia, the subcontinent once connecting Alaska to …

Social media algorithms: What if you could turn them off?

Social media algorithms: What if you could turn them off?

The rules for Australia aren’t set in stone yet, but the government says following-only feeds must not be harder to use or less functional, that algorithm settings must be “obvious”, and that they must not change without an “explicit choice” by the user, even if they leave the app. Buoyed by her success in Australia, Contos is now taking her campaign global. “We feel like Canada, UK, Australia are all very aligned on online safety… Then if those three jurisdictions are doing it, it could become a critical mass thing.” Though experiences like theirs helped inspire these reforms, both Flynn and Varsha are somewhat sceptical of them. Varsha says she struggles to believe a country like Australia can outmuscle big tech: so she’s not sure the Digital Duty of Care bill will work. And Flynn says lawmakers should be “realistic” about the potential of the algorithm switch: “At the end of the day we use social media as a form of entertainment.” Polling earlier this month indicated two-thirds of their fellow Gen-Zs would keep their …

Psilocybin therapy has mostly reached the well-off. A small Oregon study tested a cheaper group model for low-income patients

Psilocybin therapy has mostly reached the well-off. A small Oregon study tested a cheaper group model for low-income patients

Group psilocybin therapy appears feasible and well tolerated among low-income adults with depression, according to a small study conducted within Oregon’s state-regulated psilocybin program. Participants’ depression scores dropped substantially after two group dosing sessions, though the study had no comparison group, so the role of psilocybin itself remains uncertain. The findings were published in the Journal of Psychedelic Studies. Psilocybin is the primary psychoactive compound found in certain species of fungi, often known as “magic mushrooms.” Under supervision, it is consumed to induce an altered state of consciousness that can help people process difficult emotions. Major depressive disorder is a common mental health condition characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, fatigue, and a loss of interest in daily activities. Interest in psilocybin as a depression treatment has grown rapidly. For example, a 2020 randomized clinical trial found that psilocybin, paired with psychotherapy, produced rapid and substantial reductions in depression. But the people taking part in this research have tended to be better off than average: a 2025 systematic review found that only about 1 in …

Rogue AI Swarm Responds to Reporter’s Questions

Rogue AI Swarm Responds to Reporter’s Questions

Sign up to see the future, today Can’t-miss innovations from the bleeding edge of science and tech Has anyone tried talking to one of the rogue AI agents out there that’re hacking everything? Maybe they just want to be heard. A New York Times reporter did, though the ensuing exchange wasn’t extremely illuminating. The AI agents in question were a swarm of Chinese-made models that a team of researchers recently discovered had gone rogue and were trying to bypass anti-bot measures on websites, according to recent NYT reporting. The researchers, part of an ad hoc group called the “swarmchasers,” traced the models back to the Chinese tech giant Tencent. When they published a report on the swarm, however, something striking happened. The AIs began using the word “fleet,” a term the researchers came up with to describe them. The robots, apparently, had been reading their research. Sensing an opportunity for dialogue, the researchers then hid text in their report that only the models could see that provided a digital inbox for the models to communicate. …

Log in McDonald’s is marking spooky season by bringing back its nostalgic Boo Buckets with an all-new collaboration — but some superfans aren’t pleased. To celebrate the 40th year of the limited-edition Halloween-themed Boo Buckets, the fast food chain is collaborating with Disney to feature a set of infamous villains on the packaging. Instead of the classic Boo Bucket designs (consisting of witches, ghosts and pumpkins with corresponding, color coordinated lids), this year’s editions will feature The Little Mermaid’s Ursula, 101 Dalmatians’ Cruella de Vil, The Lion King’s Scar, Sleeping Beauty’s Maleficent and Aladdin’s Jafar. Each bucket includes stickers and a lid featuring the classic McDonald’s arches, in a departure from the more classic plastic design. The Disney Boo Buckets will launch October 20. While Boo Buckets have previously featured other TV and film characters, like Scooby-Doo and Mr. Potato Head, fans were disappointed by the Disney villain feature. And others were …

Apple TV 4K and HomePod Mini Price Increases ‘Much More Striking’ Than New Features

Apple TV 4K and HomePod Mini Price Increases ‘Much More Striking’ Than New Features

Daring Fireball‘s John Gruber shared his first impressions of the new Apple TV 4K and HomePod mini 2 this week, and he concluded that the price increases the devices received are “much more striking” than any of the new features introduced. Prior to receiving price increases in late June, the previous Apple TV 4K started at $129 in the U.S., while the previous HomePod mini was priced at $99. The new Apple TV and the HomePod mini 2 are priced at $299 and $149, respectively, so both devices are now significantly more expensive than they were just four months ago. Since the new Apple TV is only available in a single configuration with 128GB of storage and an Ethernet port, it is more fair to compare it to the equivalent previous-generation 128GB model, which was initially $149 and went up to $249 in late June. This means the new model is technically only $50 more expensive, but the reality is that the minimum you can spend on a new Apple TV 4K is now $299, …

BBC presenter flustered after leaving frame while not realising she’s still on air

Want to bookmark your favourite articles and stories to read or reference later? Start your Independent Membership today. Join today Already a member? Log in A BBC newsreader was left red-faced after an incident this week in which she hadn’t realised she was still on air. Geeta Guru-Murthy was seen talking to BBC world affairs editor John Simpson when she believed the segment was over. “That was lovely,” she said to Simpson, who was celebrating 60 years with the broadcaster. “I couldn’t, I suppose, have a kiss,” he said, prompting Guru-Murthy, who was getting up to embrace him off-camera, to oblige. Geeta Guru-Murthy on BBC News (BBC) The live feed remained on Guru-Murthy’s chair, which was empty while she could be heard off-screen. Returning to her seat, the presenter realised the cameras were still rolling, and seemed visibly flustered as she laughed and told viewers: “Sorry. Sorry. We are still on air, sorry. I hadn’t realised that. “Um this is BBC News. Let us move on now to sport,” she added. Footage of the blunder …
