DNC votes to restore New Hampshire’s delegates for this summer’s convention

DNC votes to restore New Hampshire’s delegates for this summer’s convention

The Democratic National Committee voted Tuesday to reinstate New Hampshire’s delegates ahead of this summer’s convention in Chicago, ending months of fighting over the state’s 2024 presidential primary.   “We as a committee and as a national committee have gone through a difficult number of weeks and months of getting to this point, and I know that New Hampshire has gone through a difficult number of weeks and months where some things we’d like to have seen take place did not,” Jim Roosevelt, the co-chair of the DNC’s Rules and Bylaws Committee, said during a meeting on Tuesday. “As it happens, all that is behind us now. We have worked out compliance with our rules and with the charter.” New Hampshire, which has a state law on the books requiring it to hold the first presidential primary, had refused to comply with a new Democratic calendar that moved South Carolina to the front of the line. As a result, President Joe Biden did not file to appear on the ballot for New Hampshire’s unsanctioned Jan. 23 …

A new abortion ban in Florida has providers scrambling—and pregnant women reassessing their options. But the law has implications well beyond the Sunshine State. More after these four new stories from The Atlantic: Losing an Access Point After two years of reporting on abortion for The Atlantic, I’ve noticed that providers and clinic administrators are usually pretty eager to talk with me. They’re happy to help demystify their work, or to explain how they’re responding to new developments in the legal system. Not this week. Over the past two days, when I’ve reached out to providers and clinic staff across Florida, almost none of them had time for an interview. They were far too busy, they told me via email or harried phone call, treating and triaging an overwhelming number of patients trying to obtain an abortion before tomorrow’s …

Gerald Herbert/AP hide caption toggle caption Gerald Herbert/AP A voter enters the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Charter Elementary School in New Orleans to cast a ballot in the 2022 elections. Gerald Herbert/AP A federal court has blocked Louisiana from using the state’s new congressional map for this year’s elections, marking the latest twist in a long-running redistricting battle over the rights of the state’s Black voters. This legal fight could help determine the balance of power in the next Congress and set up an opportunity for the Supreme Court to revisit the constitutionality of one of the key remaining parts of the embattled Voting Rights Act, which has been weakened by the high court’s conservative majority over the past decade. In a 2-1 decision released on Tuesday, the three-judge court found that the map of voting districts — which Louisiana’s state legislature drew during a January special session with two majority-Black …

Tony Gonzales unveils $786k ad buy as conservatives line up behind primary opponent Brandon Herrera

Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-Texas) unveiled a $786,000 TV buy, with the first ad focused on veterans, as conservatives to his right line up behind his primary opponent, social media influencer Brandon Herrera.  Gonzales, who has faced criticism from hard-right GOP members after personally attacking them on national TV, is looking to secure his reelection in Texas’ 23rd Congress Congressional District runoff contest slated for May 28.  On Tuesday, the moderate Republican showcased his campaign’s ad, where he touts the support from veterans, and he goes after Herrera’s remarks regarding service member suicides.  “I was awarded a Purple Heart in Iraq, but the war followed me home,” the first veteran says in the 30-second ad. “Veteran suicide is real. If you listen to Brandon Herrera, he thinks that’s a joke.”  The ad then shows an excerpt from Herrera’s February appearance on the “Unsubscribe” podcast where the Second Amendment activist says “If it makes everyone in the room feel better, I often think about putting a gun in my mouth. So, I’m basically an honorary veteran.” “If Brandon Herrera won’t support veterans, …

The Scottish actor, 77, is best known for his role as sweary media mogul Logan Roy in the acclaimed HBO drama. During a recent appearance on podcast The Starting Line, the avowed athiest took the opportunity to discuss his views on religious belief. Asked whether he felt organised religion had impeded human progress, Cox responded: “Oh considerably, yes – I think religion does hold us back because it’s belief systems, which are outside ourselves.” He went on to argue that religion has “led us into all kinds of horror”, pointing to the Holocaust and the wars in Ukraine and Gaza. “The same things are being repeated again and again in belief systems, which do not serve,” he said. Cox also argued …

‘Jurassic Park’s Sam Neill Reveals His Real Name: ‘My Parents Giving Me a Disadvantage From the Start’

‘Jurassic Park’s Sam Neill Reveals His Real Name: ‘My Parents Giving Me a Disadvantage From the Start’

Sam Neill is sharing details about an open Hollywood secret: his real name! During an appearance on Tuesday’s The Kelly Clarkson Show episode, the 76-year-old opened up about his decision to go by his nickname Sam instead of his given name. When Clarkson brings up the fact that Neill’s first name isn’t Sam, the New Zealand actor dryly quips, “That’s embarrassing that you know that.” He explains that his parents named him Nigel, “giving me a disadvantage from the start.” Although Clarkson says that Nigel Neill seems like a strong name, the Jurassic Park star explains that having the name Nigel leads to cruel childhood nicknames like “Nigel No Friends.” “When I was 10, my best friend was called Nigel Nut — which is even worse. Nigel Nut and Nigel Neill,” he recalls for the audience. “But we liked Westerns and we thought, ‘Let’s not just call ourselves Nigel, let’s have nicknames.’ So I was called Sam and he was called Bill. And that was the best decision I ever made.” “There are no film actors called Nigel Niell, that’s never gonna …
