Noem Looking to Further Bolster Texas Security Efforts at US-Mexico Border

Noem Looking to Further Bolster Texas Security Efforts at US-Mexico Border

South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem said Wednesday that her administration is considering boosting its support for Texas’ efforts to deter immigration at the U.S.-Mexico border, such as sending razor wire and security personnel. The second-term Republican governor blasted conditions at the border in a speech to a joint session of the Legislature, a gathering she requested Monday after visiting the border last week. Noem, once seen as a potential 2024 presidential candidate, has made the border situation a focus during her tenure. “The United States of America is in a time of invasion,” Noem said. “The invasion is coming over our southern border. The 50 states have a common enemy, and that enemy is the Mexican drug cartels. They are waging war against our nation, and these cartels are perpetuating violence in each of our states, even right here in South Dakota.” Border security has taken center stage in numerous states and in Congress, where Republicans are conditioning aid to Ukraine on a border security deal, and pushing to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas. …

USAID’s Samantha Power confronted by staff over Biden’s Gaza policy

USAID’s Samantha Power confronted by staff over Biden’s Gaza policy

Samantha Power, head of the U.S. Agency for International Development and a world-renowned scholar on genocide, was pointedly challenged by current and former USAID employees who during a public event Tuesday questioned her stance on the war in Gaza and complicity in the divisive U.S. policy. “You wrote a book on genocide and you’re still working for the administration: You should resign and speak out,” said Agnieszka Sykes, a global health specialist who told The Washington Post she left her job at USAID late last week. Sykes interrupted a speech Power was giving in Washington on climate change and natural disasters to invoke Power’s book “A Problem from Hell.” The Pulitzer Prize-winning work examines and condemns U.S. inaction on various atrocities, from Armenia to Rwanda, spanning several presidential administrations. Like other members of President Biden’s National Security Council, Power oversees an agency deeply divided about Washington’s military support for Israel’s war in Gaza and refusal to demand a cease-fire. But she is unique in being publicly confronted by her own workforce over the administration’s policy …

Thousands of California homeowners can cut their property tax bill. Here’s how

Thousands of California homeowners can cut their property tax bill. Here’s how

With property tax bills as high as they are in Southern California, you’d think that homeowners would sign up for every break they could get. You would be wrong. Since 1974, the state of California has offered to reduce the assessed value of any owner-occupied home by $7,000. That, in turn, reduces the home’s annual tax bill. You just have to apply once, and the “homeowners exemption” will be applied automatically to your assessment until you move out or sell. According to Los Angeles County Assessor Jeff Prang, however, nearly one-third of county homeowners do not sign up for the exemption. That translates to $30 million in extra tax payments by roughly 435,000 households. Granted, that’s not a huge amount of money per household; with property tax rates generally set at 1% of assessed value, the $7,000 exemption saves $70 per year. But after a few years, that would be enough for a bigger TV set in your living room. And signing up for the exemption is especially important for homeowners hoping to take advantage …

‘Better than us in all areas’: Pochettino bemoans Chelsea display at Anfield | Chelsea

Mauricio Pochettino warned Chelsea will suffer another drubbing at the hands of Liverpool in next month’s Carabao Cup final with a repeat of their timid display at Anfield, where Jürgen Klopp celebrated the 200th Premier League win of his reign in style. Liverpool maintained their lead at the top of the Premier League with a 4-1 romp against the big-spending visitors from Stamford Bridge. The young defender Conor Bradley produced another outstanding performance at right-back while Darwin Núñez struck the woodwork four times, including from the penalty spot. The two teams meet again at Wembley on 25 February and Pochettino admitted Chelsea will suffer unless there is a vast improvement in their attitude and performance level. “The performance wasn’t good from us,” said the Chelsea manager, who has presided over six Premier League away defeats this season. “If we want to match them and compete with them in the final then we have to compete in a different way. They were more aggressive than us. They were better than us in all areas. “Of course …

Reform Jews support ‘just’ war in Gaza but call for two-state solution

Reform Jews support ‘just’ war in Gaza but call for two-state solution

(RNS) — America’s largest Jewish denomination issued a statement Tuesday (Jan. 30) calling the Israel-Hamas war “just” but reiterating its support for a two-state solution to the conflict. The statement, signed by more than a dozen U.S. and Canadian leaders in the Reform movement, is an attempt to thread the needle at a time of spiraling conflict in the Middle East, conveying resolute support for Israel while offering a critique of some Israeli proposals for the war’s aftermath. Last week, in the midst of renewed international calls to revive a two-state solution, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu flatly rejected an independent Palestinian state. On Sunday in East Jerusalem, thousands of people, including several ministers of Netanyahu’s government, called for Jews to resettle in the Gaza Strip. (Israel withdrew its troops from the Gaza Strip in 2005 and forced Jewish settlers there to evacuate their homes.) The Reform movement statement opposed both Netanyahu’s stance and the new move to establish an Israeli presence in Gaza. It was issued by the Union for Reform Judaism, which represents …

US Marks Anniversary of Myanmar Coup With New Sanctions

US Marks Anniversary of Myanmar Coup With New Sanctions

U.S. state department —  The United States is imposing further sanctions on Myanmar’s military regime three years after the February 1, 2021, military coup, and designating four individuals and two entities associated with it. The U.S. State Department said the latest action targets sources of revenue that support the regime’s military activities against civilians and those who provide material and support for arms production in Myanmar, also known as Burma. On Wednesday, the U.S. Treasury Department announced sanctions against the Shwe Byain Phyu Group of Companies, its owner Thein Win Zaw, and his wife and two adult children. Sanctions were also announced against Myanma Five Star Line, a shipping company. The two entities are said to maintain a relationship with Myanma Economic Holdings Public Co. Ltd., or MEHL, which is controlled by the now-ruling Burmese military or Tatmadaw. The Tatmadaw has long relied on business activities to finance its own operations. The Treasury said these two entities have facilitated the military regime’s acquisition of foreign currency and the importation of petroleum and other materials through …

Alec Baldwin pleads not guilty to involuntary manslaughter in Rust shooting | Ents & Arts News

Alec Baldwin has plead not guilty to a charge of involuntary manslaughter over the on-set shooting death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. Ms Hutchins was shot and killed during filming of the western movie Rust in New Mexico after a gun the actor was holding went off. Baldwin made the plea as he waived his right to an arraignment after he was indicted by a grand jury on 19 January, according to court documents. Waiving the right to an arraignment means the defendant does not have to appear in court to enter their plea, a lawyer can do it for them. Baldwin was not present at the court. The “30 Rock” actor was allowed to remain free without posting bail under the arraignment waiver with the First Judicial District Court in Santa Fe. Baldwin was originally charged over the shooting in January 2023. Those charges were dropped a few months later based on evidence the hammer of the revolver might have been modified, allowing it to fire without the trigger being pulled. Alec Baldwin Pleads Not Guilty to Involuntary Manslaughter in ‘Rust’

Alec Baldwin Pleads Not Guilty to Involuntary Manslaughter in ‘Rust’

Alec Baldwin pleaded not guilty on Wednesday to involuntary manslaughter charges lodged against him by New Mexico prosecutors, who revived the criminal case against him earlier this month over his role in the fatal shooting of a cinematographer on the set of Rust. The actor and producer of the low-budget western has maintained that he didn’t pull the trigger on the firearm that discharged. He was indicted for a second time after charges were initially dropped following a five-month investigation, culminating with a forensic expert issuing a report clashing with his account of the incident. Baldwin entered the not guilty plea in a court filing, waiving his virtual court appearance scheduled for Thursday morning. He was not arrested. Under the conditions of release, the actor is barred from possessing any firearms, leaving the country or coming into contact with anyone who may testify in the case. The court, however, permitted him to have contact with witnesses connected with the Rust production provided that he does not discuss the incident or potential testimony. “Discussion about the …
