Explosion rocks Amsterdam Jewish school in ‘cowardly act of aggression’ | World | News

A Jewish school was rocked by an explosion in the early hours of Saturday. The incident occured in Amsterdam with police and fire officials quickly responding to the incident.

The city’s mayor Femke Halsema said she believed the blast was a “deliberate attack against the Jewish community”. However, no injuries have been reported. Police are examining camera footage that appears to show the individual igniting the explosive device.

Ms Halsema said: “This is a cowardly act of aggression against the Jewish community. Jewish people in Amsterdam are increasingly confronted with antisemitism. This is unacceptable.”

The Islamic Movement of the Companions of the Right has claimed responsibility for the attack, marking the fourth incident in Europe they have said they carried out this week.

The group released a video online showing a person setting a fire that then explodes before driving away, though officials have not verified whether the footage is genuine or whether the group was actually involved.

Security around Jewish schools and community institutions has been tightened even further, following recent attacks on synagogues in Rotterdam and in Liège, Belgium.

There was also an attack on a synagogue in West Bloomfield Township, near Detroit, on Thursday, where a Lebanese‑born US citizen allegedly drove his car into the building before being fatally shot by authorities while armed with a rifle.

None of the synagogue’s staff, teachers or the 140 children in its early‑childhood centre were harmed. Federal investigators later said the Michigan incident constituted an act of violence directed at the Jewish community.

Concerns about potential threats to Jewish communities worldwide have grown in the wake of US–Israeli airstrikes on Iran and Tehran’s subsequent military retaliation.

The escalation has heightened fears that Jewish institutions and individuals could become targets amid rising regional and global tensions, prompting increased vigilance and security measures in many countries.
