Brad Pitt’s comeback act has faltered

Brad Pitt’s comeback act has faltered

Brad Pitt and Paramount Pictures have quite a bit in common these days. Both Pitt and Paramount have leaned into machismo to appeal to a wider male demographic; both are trying to salvage their reputations after a string of tumultuous events and bad press; and neither has put out a good movie in over a year. Is it really any wonder that their latest collaboration, the by-the-numbers survival film “Heart of the Beast,” was crushed by a seven-year-old superhero movie? If you’ve kept up with the headlines, probably not. After David Ellison acquired Paramount and set his sights on Warner Bros., goodwill has been hard to come by for the studio. Likewise with Pitt, a string of abuse allegations from his ex-wife, Angelina Jolie, led to the actor favoring producing over acting, stepping behind the scenes to minimize the damage. Perhaps if viewers don’t see Pitt as much, they’ll forget the allegations and embrace him once more as a movie star. When “F1” did gangbusters numbers last summer, it looked as though that strategy might …

Former athletes turned lawmakers tackle Protect College Sports Act

Tommy Tuberville led Auburn to an undefeated season in 2004, and now the Alabama Republican senator is championing the Protect College Sports Act in Congress. He’s one of a number of former collegiate athletes who are now Senators helping to shape the legislation. Doug Benc/Getty Images hide caption toggle caption Doug Benc/Getty Images WASHINGTON — With a major college sports reform bill on the brink of a milestone in Congress, some former athletes have a special place in the debate: the handful of U.S. Senators who played college sports themselves. Supporters of the Protect College Sports Act, which is poised to pass the Senate on Monday, say the bill is needed to fix what they call an era of chaos in Division I athletics, characterized by ballooning pay for athletes, unlimited transfers between schools, constant lawsuits over eligibility rules and runaway athletic department budgets. At least half a dozen sitting senators were NCAA Division I athletes, and a handful of others played in Division II or in sports governed by other organizations. As the debate …

What Sounded Like Harsh Parenting Was Really an Act of Love

What Sounded Like Harsh Parenting Was Really an Act of Love

Tayler, 5, flips out at a restaurant because her little sister, Stella, is sitting next to Mom. Tayler starts screeching and pushing Stella out of the chair. Her parents, Andrew and Lizzy, can’t get her back in control. The more they try to reason and problem-solve with her, or offer calming tools, the more escalated she becomes. (Dad calls this Tayler’s “street fighter” mode.) In situations like this, Lizzy and Andrew often acquiesce to whatever demand Tayler is making to head off the inevitable explosion, especially in a public place. Stella also often gives Tayler what she wants, pacifying her sister to keep the peace. Lizzy and Andrew are very concerned about this dynamic for several reasons: It’s enabling Tayler to think she can always get her way, and that ruling through intimidation and threats works. Tayler isn’t learning to accept and cope with limits. Tayler is sucking all the oxygen out of the family, and they are having very negative feelings about her. Stella is learning to be a pleaser and to forgo her …

Ed Sheeran support act says anger should be directed at Robert Kraft

Singer Aaron Rowe, one of the supporting acts who dropped out of Ed Sheeran’s U.S. tour after Macklemore was removed for his pro-Palestine remarks, says that backlash about the controversy is being misdirected. In a video shared on social media Friday, Rowe told his followers that the real issue lies with New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft, who said that Macklemore was not welcome at his stadium following his onstage call to “free Palestine” amid Israel’s genocide in Gaza. “I’m gonna be honest, I think youse are all focusing on the wrong person here,” Rowe said in his video on Instagram. “All I keep hearing is Ed Sheeran this, Ed Sheeran that, when youse really should be focusing on the likes of Robert Kraft.” He continued, “ You should really be focusing on the Zionist lobbies that are trying to silence the voices of people who are shouting about genocide.” The Irish singer then went on to stick up for Sheeran, who said in an initial statement that he was “not complicit” in Macklemore being …

DERA LIVES! House votes to fund Diesel Emissions Reduction Act through 2029

DERA LIVES! House votes to fund Diesel Emissions Reduction Act through 2029

This week, the US House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly in a bipartisan vote to renew funding for the Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA), passing the measure 343-79 and extending federal funding for cleaner medium- and heavy-duty vehicles through 2029. Proving once again that everyone can get behind reducing air pollution, saving money on fuel, and AM radio, the House passed 14 bills this week, including House Resolution 2140 that amends section 797(a) of the Energy Policy Act of 2005 to extend the authorization of the Diesel Emissions Reduction Act grant program to 2029. Introduced by Reps. Doris Matsui (D-CA), Ken Calvert (R-CA), Chellie Pingree (D-ME), and Nick Langworthy (R-NY), the bipartisan legislation authorized $100 million in annual for the long-running program through fiscal year 2029. “Through the diligent work of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, we are preserving the public health and safety of our communities, lowering electricity prices for hardworking families, and promoting a vibrant tourism industry that uplifts communities across the country,” said Congressman Brett Guthrie (KY-02), Chairman of the House …

Tribal Gaming Group Seeks Betting Safeguards in CLARITY Act

Tribal Gaming Group Seeks Betting Safeguards in CLARITY Act

The California Nations Indian Gaming Association urged Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-South Dakota, and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-New York, not to bring up the CLARITY Act on Tuesday unless the bill closes what the group calls a prediction-market loophole and preserves federal, state, and tribal gaming law. The request, made in a letter from CNIGA Chairman James Siva, lands days ahead of a scheduled Senate cloture vote, as tribal leaders nationally warn Congress that prediction markets are gambling by another name. Siva’s letter argues that prediction-market operators are trying to use federal commodities law to offer nationwide gambling, sidestepping the framework Congress built through the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act and decades of tribal-state compacts. CNIGA wants any digital-asset market-structure bill to explicitly bar designated commodity markets from listing event contracts tied to sports wagering, athletic competitions, player performance, or casino-style gaming – anything already regulated under federal, state, or tribal gaming law. The coalition is also asking lawmakers to preserve IGRA and existing compacts outright, and to shut off any route by which …

Sydney Sweeney’s bombshell act masks a career with no endgame

Sydney Sweeney’s bombshell act masks a career with no endgame

In one of her new ads for the peer-to-peer sports betting platform Novig, actress Sydney Sweeney — wearing nothing but underwear and a football placed suggestively across her bare chest — turns her head toward the camera and looks down the barrel of the lens. Her hollow stare precedes an even more soulless bit of ad copy, falling out from between her pursed lips with a heavy thunk: “It’s gamedaaayyyyyyyy.”  Sweeney delivers this solitary line with such a (typically) wooden energy that I’m not even convinced she believes it’s gameday, sort of like when a musician puts out a Christmas album in November, and one has to quiet the knowledge that it was most certainly recorded in July. Her voice almost seems to lilt up at the end, as if she’s asking a question. “It’s gameday?” For just a flash of a moment, Sweeney’s contrived tone belies her body’s projected confidence. The knowledge of her intentions, and which unsavory games she’s playing, is visibly splayed across her face and audible in her voice. Then she …
