Baker dies after getting caught in bread machine

A baker has died in Florida after getting caught in a bread machine.

Mordehay Grunberger was found dead at South Florida Kosher Market, in North Miami Beach, on Friday after what appeared to be a freak accident involving an industrial dough mixer.

He had been preparing to make challah, a ceremonial bread traditionally eaten on Jewish holidays, according to a report.

Police said there were no signs of foul play following the death of the 71-year-old.

The market shut its doors after the incident. Photos from the scene showed that it had been cordoned off with yellow police tape, and that the Miami-Dade county medical examiner had parked outside.

So far, it is unclear exactly how Grunberger could have been caught in the mixer, but Florida’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has opened an investigation.

“At this time, there are no signs of foul play and we believe the incident was accidental involving an industrial dough mixer,” police told local media.

Mr Grunberger, who according to The New York Post was the head pastry chef, leaves a widow and two children.

His wife, Inna Gastman Moar, paid tribute to her “beloved husband” in a message on social media, describing him as “the closest person in my life, my best friend, and father of my two beautiful sons”.

She said: “I lost myself. I love him so much. He’s the love of my life.”

In a statement to a Jewish news outlet, Yitzie Spalter, who owns the market, described the loss as devastating.

“To our community, we suffered an unimaginable tragedy with the shocking death of our beloved baker, Mordechai – Miki – Grunberger,” he said on Friday.

“Our store is open, but the bakery will not be at regular capacity today. Thank you for understanding while we process this tragedy.”

Well-wishers paid tribute to the 71-year-old on social media, with one praising his “noble heart”. A friend wrote that he “gave me his hand in the most difficult moments”, saying they could “count on his love and solidarity”.

Another said Mr Grunberger was a “wonderful person and a great friend” who was in the “hearts of all those that he touched, in their life, in one way or another.”

Employees at the South Florida Kosher Market declined to speak about the accident when approached by news outlets.
