Florida Woman Arrested for Selling Human Remains on Facebook Marketplace

Florida Woman Arrested for Selling Human Remains on Facebook Marketplace

Image by Getty / Futurism Down in the wild and wonderful world of Florida, the owner of an oddities shop has been arrested for selling human remains on Facebook Marketplace. As USA Today reports, 52-year-old Kymberlee Schopper has been charged with the illegal purchase and sale of human bones on Zuckerberg’s commerce platform. At the end of 2023, police in the Daytona Beach suburb of Orange City received a tip that Wicked Wonderland, Schopper’s shop that also advertises pet taxidermy and animal “mummification” on its website, was selling various human bones and skeletal fragments. From a $35 human rib to a $600 partial human skull, the store’s wares were valued at $850 in the tip authorities received. When they spoke with Schopper’s daughter and co-owner, 33-year-old Ashley Lelesi, the proprietress copped to the sale without hesitation. According to the affidavit viewed by USA Today, the mother-daughter team was unaware that selling bones was illegal in the state of Florida — one of only eight American states that broadly bans the practice, though dozens of other states …

The 3 Cities With The Most People In Financial Distress

The 3 Cities With The Most People In Financial Distress

Over the last few years, millions of Americans have felt the consequences of economic instability. The cost of living is nearly impossible for many to keep up with and inflation certainly doesn’t help. The American Psychological Association’s annual Stress in America survey found that money is a significant stressor for 64% of Americans. Yet, according to a study conducted by WalletHub, residents of three specific cities are in more financial distress than those who live anywhere else in the country. So, if you’re considering relocating to one of these cities, you might want to think again! A recent study found that these 3 cities have the most people in financial distress: 1. Houston, Texas Houston — the most populated city in Texas and fourth most populated in the country — is home to the most people in financial distress in all of the U.S. The state as a whole seems to be struggling, and last year, WalletHub declared the entire state of Texas the number one state in financial distress.  This is likely due in …

Weaponized Humanism: Stories from the Campaign Trail in Florida

Weaponized Humanism: Stories from the Campaign Trail in Florida

I’ve been a Democrat as long as I’ve been an atheist—since I could think for myself and begin to develop the moral compass that led me to find myself in Tallahassee, Florida in April 2022, filing to run for the Florida House of Representatives. I grew up in southern Indiana, the only Democrat and the only atheist I knew—so I’ve been passionate about standing up for the underdog for a while. And being a Democrat in Florida is certainly running as an underdog. When I moved to the Sunshine State, I immediately jumped into local politics, eventually serving as the President of the Young Democrats of Seminole County. And as a volunteer for a local State Senate campaign and for President Joe Biden’s 2020 election, I learned so much about our community and fell even more in love with my adopted hometown. A couple of years into my time here in central Florida, the team at the Florida House Democratic Campaign Committee reached out to ask me to consider running for office against an incumbent …

Florida Humanist Groups Are Spreading Christmas Cheer

Florida Humanist Groups Are Spreading Christmas Cheer

AHA Executive Director Fish Stark attends a kick-off event in Orlando hosted by the Central Florida Freethought Community. It was easy to get American Humanist Association local Florida chapters Central Florida Freethought Community (CFFC) and Humanists of Tallahassee (HOT) on board with our campaign to Stop Governor Ron DeSantis’ War on Christmas. They know firsthand how difficult he makes it for families to afford groceries and housing, receive health insurance, access educational resources, and get hurricane relief funding (despite record-breaking devastating storms in 2024). They loved the opportunity to expand their regular local gift and supply drives with this national effort to provide toys, books, and everyday essentials to Florida families in need. They also identified local stores we could work with to further support communities beyond the holidays. All campaign donations (after credit card fees) go directly to purchasing gifts based on wish lists provided by our partners and requested by youth-serving charities, schools, and shelters serving low-income Florida families. On December 3, AHA Executive Director Fish Stark visited Orlando for a kick-off event, …

New AHA Campaign to Provide Gifts, Supplies to Florida Families for the Holidays

New AHA Campaign to Provide Gifts, Supplies to Florida Families for the Holidays

The American Humanist Association today launched its Stop Ron’s War on Christmas campaign to provide holiday gifts and supplies to Florida families who have been affected by the disastrous economic and healthcare policies of Gov. Ron DeSantis. DeSantis is making the holiday season—and everyday essentials—more difficult for Florida families to afford due to several policies, including: The oft-recited rallying cry from Christian Nationalists during the months of November and December is that humanists, atheists, and secular people are offended by people celebrating Christmas. That’s a lie. And with low-income families in Florida being left in the cold from the DeSantis administration, we have to wonder: Who is really waging a war on Christmas? Humanists believe in people’s right to worship however they want, or not at all, and to celebrate any holiday that aligns with their personal values. (In fact, many humanists do celebrate Christmas.) We also care about humanist values: taking care of those in need, treating people fairly, and recognizing the dignity of every person. That’s why the AHA is trying to do …

Florida Authorities Recover 37 Gold Coins Stolen From 1715 Fleet Shipwrecks

Authored by Aldgra Fredly via The Epoch Times, Florida authorities have recovered 37 gold coins worth more than $1 million that were stolen from the 1715 Fleet shipwrecks, the state’s Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) said on Nov. 26. The FWC said the gold coin recovery marked “a major milestone” in a years-long investigation into the theft and illegal trafficking of historical artifacts. The gold coins were initially found by contracted salvage operators for the 1715 Fleet—comprising Spanish ships that sank in a hurricane off Florida’s coast in 1715—off Florida’s Treasure Coast in 2015. There were 101 gold coins found from the wreckages, but only 51 of them were reported and adjudicated, while the remaining gold coins were not disclosed and were later stolen, the FWC said in a statement. FWC investigators launched a probe with the FBI after new evidence came to light in June this year, leading to the arrest of Eric Schmitt, whose family had been contracted to salvage the centuries-old fleet. Schmitt was connected to the illegal sale of stolen …
