You know the old adage about the mullet: “business in the front, party in the back.” That’s exactly the kind of motto that Oscar Isaac’s character Josh lives by in season two of Netflix’s hit series Beef. And it’s best reflected in his frat bro baby mullet that he rocks throughout the show.
Isaac’s Josh is the general manager of a snooty country club, suffocated by the burden of having to deal with the egos of the rich and famous residents there while simultaneously dealing with his failing marriage to Carey Mulligan’s Linsday and ongoing money troubles. Oh, and that’s all on top of his having to placate the demands of employees Austin and Ashley, played by Charles Melton and Cailee Spaeny respectively, who have damning footage of a heated fight between the older couple.
For the series, Variety reported that Isaac worked with hairstylist Tim Nolan who suggested that the actor don what we’re calling a mini mullet: short in the front with some longer bits at the back that aren’t quite the shoulder-grazing strands that made the ‘80s mullet so repulsive to some.
“It’s a perfect thing that again, speaks to somebody that’s trying to hold on to a particular image of youth,” Isaac told Variety. “And one that shows a sense of relaxation and of energy—even though he’s just being strangled the entire time.”
The mini mullet paired with Josh’s occasional five o’clock shadow, and viewers are clued into just how much his life is starting to slip once the series takes a darker turn. (For some, though, it’s simply added to Isaac’s overall sex appeal.)
The mini mullet is a style that Isaac has actually been sporting in real life as well. During the Frankenstein press tour, Isaac appeared on the red carpet pairing impeccable tailoring with a ‘do that was once seen as an anti-fashion statement. The toned-down mullet has been adopted by many high-profile celebrities these days including Jacob Elordi, Harry Styles, and Connor Storrie.
“I think they’ve tried to phase out the mullet a couple times since it came back, but I don’t think the mullet is gonna die all together,” Julius Arriola, a celebrity hairstylist who goes by the name Julius Cvesar, tells GQ. “It’s just gonna continue to evolve. The mullet is now evolving into kind of a modern mod mullet, where you got a lot of wispies on the neck, just to kind of have a good profile and silhouette.”
While you’ll have to watch the second season of Beef to see how Isaac’s Josh fares in his predicament, there’s one lesson you can take from his character right this second: The mullet is here to stay in 2026.
