The ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Post-Credits Scene, Explained

So, there it is: we might’ve had to wait five years, but we got another great Spider-Man movie. Even amid Marvel’s protracted flop era, the webslinger is Teflon; there’s just something about Tom Holland swinging around in spandex that gets the people going, and Brand New Day might’ve been the best of his solo adventures to date. (Well, semi-solo—Peter does spend a lot of time hanging out with Jon Bernthal’s Punisher.) We’re putting that down to the film’s rare balance of heart and kick-ass set pieces, including that bit with the stolen tank, which had us pumping our fists like we were front-row at the Spidey concert. Half a decade? Well worth it.

The problem is that Marvel hasn’t really clarified when we’ll next see Holland’s Spidey in action. Holland was conspicuously absent from official cast announcements for Avengers: Doomsday, the MCU’s next über-gluttonous crossover event that will see Every Single Superhero Ever come to blows with Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom. Kind of crazy, right? Marvel’s biggest draw, whose new movie just pulled in a record-breaking $360 million at the US box office, missing from the super-roster? It’s possible Holland was busy making Brand New Day and Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey at the same time—which seems like a fair excuse. But it’s also possible Marvel is saving him for their big 2027 tentpole, Avengers: Secret Wars.

This has been the prevailing fan theory for a while, but the Brand New Day post-credits scene backs it up. It’s an incredibly short clip of the “Spidey-Tracker,” an app built by Peter’s pal Ned (Jacob Battalon) that track Spider-Man’s movements in real time. The display glitches out, and the blinking Spider-Man icon disappears. Then the map zooms out, and the icon representing Spidey reappears—in what looks like the far reaches of outer space (or in another universe entirely; look, this multiverse stuff is a pain in the ass to follow.) Cue title card, promising that “Spider-Man will Return.”

Great news for anyone (read: no one) who thought this would be the end of Marvel (and Sony’s) go-to golden goose. If you’re familiar with the comics that reportedly inspired Avengers: Secret Wars, the post-credits scene seems to hint at Spidey’s arrival on “Battleworld,” a patchwork planet reconstituted from various other superhero universes that will act as a cosmic stage for the cinematic crossover event to end all cinematic crossover events.

Holland’s Spidey versus Hugh Jackman‘s Wolverine, maybe! Chris Evans’ Captain America dunking on Chris Evans’ Human Torch! Whatever will make the geeks shoot their thickest, stringiest webs. Think No Way Home on steroids. “Battleworld” is expected to be the setting for the film Secret Wars, with fans speculating online that RDJ’s Doom will create it at the end of Doomsday — though that is obviously yet to be seen.

So, Spidey’s (gonna be) back, baby! And it’ll probably be in one of those Avengers movies, which we could’ve told you already, but hey. And we’d bet on Secret Wars. Expect at least one scene where he is confused as fuck about why the big new villain looks like Iron Man. We’ll be with ya there, Spidey.
