New material tackles one of the biggest barriers to scaling artificial intelligence

New material tackles one of the biggest barriers to scaling artificial intelligence

Photonic chips sit deep inside the modern internet, routing the light pulses that carry emails, videos and AI requests around the world. They are fast, compact and essential. However, they still stumble at some of the most important jobs. This is especially true when light signals need to be converted, amplified or reshaped. That weakness matters more now than it did a few years ago. Generative AI systems push far more data back and forth between processors than a standard search query does. Every extra exchange adds pressure on the hardware that moves information inside and between data centers. In addition, what used to be a modest energy cost could become a much larger one. This will happen as AI systems expand and demand more from the networks underneath them. A team at Polytechnique Montréal says it has found a way to give photonic chips some of the functions they have long lacked. Writing in Science Advances, the researchers report a material that can be added directly onto silicon. This material lets light be processed …

Scaling green hydrogen across sectors

Scaling green hydrogen across sectors

Operational pilots are already in place across production, maritime, and transport. NORHyWAY will now scale these into a fully integrated hydrogen value chain, connecting the Arctic to Europe with renewable energy at its core. A total of approximately €963m in planned investments. Four sectors – maritime, road freight, energy storage and coastal industry – developed in parallel across interconnected use cases. NORHyWAY is built around a clear proposition: that green hydrogen can become commercially viable at scale, across multiple sectors, and compete with fossil fuels on price. Led by RENERGY (Renewable Energy Cluster), with SINTEF as technical coordinator, NORHyWAY is backed by €20m from the EU’s Clean Hydrogen Partnership through Horizon Europe. The project builds on operational pilots already in place across hydrogen production, maritime applications and transport, and moves these into large-scale deployment. At the same time, new pilots – such as hydrogen-based grid flexibility – are being developed and tested as part of the system. Pilot-E – the world’s first hydrogen-powered work vessel, by Moen Marin. What gives NORHyWAY its credibility is its …

Scaling creativity in the age of AI

Scaling creativity in the age of AI

Starting with a bespoke AI model built with Adobe Firefly Foundry addresses this directly. Firefly Foundry starts with a commercially safe base model and trains further on a company’s IP, making it possible to produce content that genuinely reflects the team’s vision. And to ensure that Firefly Foundry models truly represent the creatives at the helm, Adobe has partnered with film studios like Wonder Studios, Promise.ai, and B5 Studios, and the “big three” talent agencies CAA, UTA, and WME to deeply understand what it means (and what it takes) to build an IP-immersive model that keeps creatives at the center as these film studios and talent agencies scale their visions. These brand ecosystems can accelerate nearly every phase of the production process, from ideation and storyboarding to production and promotion, all while preserving artistry and authorship. And to power the next generation of creativity and content, Adobe has recently announced a strategic partnership with NVIDIA, delivering best-in-class creative control along with enterprise-grade, commercially safe content at scale. Generic AI gives teams a starting point. But …

This new map shows where electric truck charging is scaling

This new map shows where electric truck charging is scaling

CALSTART’s National Medium- and Heavy-Duty Zero-Emission Infrastructure Map. Image: Calstart CALSTART has expanded its US map of medium- and heavy-duty zero-emission truck infrastructure, providing fleets with a clearer picture of where they can charge or refuel. The updated National Medium- and Heavy-Duty Zero-Emission Infrastructure Map now includes around 162 infrastructure facilities across 17 states for electric and hydrogen-powered trucks. CALSTART says the additions line up with trends highlighted in its latest Zeroing in on Zero-Emission Trucks report, which found that public charging and refueling networks for commercial trucks are still in the early stages of scaling up. The clean transportation nonprofit added 64 new electric truck charging and hydrogen refueling sites to the map, along with several new planning tools designed to show how truck charging demand could affect the grid over the next decade. Truck drivers and fleet operators can now use the map to locate more than 1,500 EV charging plugs and 32 hydrogen refueling nozzles operated by various infrastructure providers. Scaling AI into production is forcing a rethink of enterprise infrastructure

Scaling AI into production is forcing a rethink of enterprise infrastructure

Presented by Nutanix Across industries, organizations are focused on how to move from AI pilots, proofs of concept, and cloud-based experimentation to deploying it at scale — across real workloads, for real users, in real business environments. VentureBeat spoke with Tarkan Maner, president and chief commercial officer at Nutanix, and Thomas Cornely, EVP of product management, about what that transition demands, and what it will take to get it right. “AI in general is shifting everything we do, not only in technology, but across all vertical industries, from regulated industries like banking, health care, government, education to non-regulated industries like manufacturing and retail,” Maner said. “As a complete platform company, we welcome this change. It’s creating more opportunities for us as a company to serve our customers in better ways as we move forward.” But there’s still a practical gap between experimentation and production, Cornely said. “It’s one thing to do an experiment, to do a prototype. It’s a different thing to take that prototype and deploy it for 10,000 employees,” he explained. “We went …

Train-to-Test scaling explained: How to optimize your end-to-end AI compute budget for inference

Train-to-Test scaling explained: How to optimize your end-to-end AI compute budget for inference

The standard guidelines for building large language models (LLMs) optimize only for training costs and ignore inference costs. This poses a challenge for real-world applications that use inference-time scaling techniques to increase the accuracy of model responses, such as drawing multiple reasoning samples from a model at deployment. To bridge this gap, researchers at University of Wisconsin-Madison and Stanford University have introduced Train-to-Test (T2) scaling laws, a framework that jointly optimizes a model’s parameter size, its training data volume, and the number of test-time inference samples. In practice, their approach proves that it is compute-optimal to train substantially smaller models on vastly more data than traditional rules prescribe, and then use the saved computational overhead to generate multiple repeated samples at inference. For enterprise AI application developers who are training their own models, this research provides a proven blueprint for maximizing return on investment. It shows that AI reasoning does not necessarily require spending huge amounts on frontier models. Instead, smaller models can yield stronger performance on complex tasks while keeping per-query inference costs manageable …

Mind the scaling gap: female ambition needs better funding, not more advice

Mind the scaling gap: female ambition needs better funding, not more advice

A male founder’s pitchdeck is taken at face value – and more likely to be backed – despite often being higher risk. Female entrepreneurs’ forecasts, meanwhile, are ‘discounted’ by investors for appearing conservative, even though they are more likely to be met. This is one of many depressing truths that are holding back women in business that were discussed on Sunday’s International Women’s Day. It’s not all grim. Research published today in the Pathway Report by ScaleUp Institute found Scotland’s 139 scaling female founded businesses are generating £1.5 billion in revenues and employing more than 16,000 people. There’s growing investment into female-founded Scottish scale ups – up 80% on last year – but this remains concentrated in a small number of firms. “Many continue to rely on bootstrapping and traditional finance rather than growth equity. Too often women are scaling in spite of the system not because of it,” the report found. In a bid to tacking a more practical approach to levelling the business playing field at ScaleUp Standard, this week, Stripe and Stare’s co-founder …
