Julianne Moore, Paul Giamatti in Theater Comedy

Julianne Moore, Paul Giamatti in Theater Comedy

When Mona (Julianne Moore) tells a friend she’s auditioned for a production of a show called Nosy Neighbors at their local theater, he admits he’s never liked musicals. They just don’t feel authentic, he explains, the way the characters are always bursting into song. Who does that? Well, no one, not even in the musical-loving The Debut. But among the first of the film’s sly tricks is that it builds a world in which it feels like people could, where in fact it feels more unnatural that they don’t. Blessed with swing-for-the-fences brio and, in Moore and Paul Giamatti, a leading duo capable of navigating every one of those wild turns, the latest feature by Jesse Eisenberg makes for a frequently hilarious journey into the mind of an overly committed actor — even if, in the end, it seems unsure quite what it wants to say about the self-destructive pursuit of artistic perfection. The Debut The Bottom Line A very good time, if not necessarily a profound one. Venue: Telluride Film FestivalCast: Julianne Moore, Paul …

At this year’s Zurich Film Fest, Moore will be given the lifetime achievement award in recognition for her career and recent starring role in The Debut, which is screening at the festival. The movie follows Mona Friedman (Moore), who is cast in a bit part at a small community theater and transforms from a shy, unassuming housewife into a zealous method actor willing to do anything to protect the artistic integrity of her marginal role — even if it means waging war against …

Artists, Collectors, Accuse Dealer Jonathan Carver Moore of Nonpayment

Jonathan Carver Moore says he cashed in his own retirement account to start his gallery on the edge of San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood in 2023. He has mounted strong presentations at art fairs from Chicago to Miami. But artists, collectors and dealers say he has been guilty of chronic non-payment and withholding artworks, according to an extensive report in the San Francisco Standard.  Nine artists and gallery representatives who have done business with Moore say they have thousands of dollars outstanding from the dealer, or that he hasn’t returned their work to them despite numerous requests. Seven artists wrote to Moore jointly this month, demanding payment and the return of unsold work in a letter reviewed by the Standard. Related Articles As of Wednesday afternoon, the website for Moore’s gallery was not functional.  Moore makes it a point to work with Black, female, queer, and Indigenous artists, and hosts a residency program for them, next door to the gallery, as ARTnews reported in a January profile of the dealer. He has exhibited at the Atlanta …

When Dudley Moore Intoxicated Audiences in ‘Arthur’

When Dudley Moore Intoxicated Audiences in ‘Arthur’

A toast is in order for Arthur, which became a comedy classic despite a quiet release 45 years ago. After penning Carl Reiner’s 1978 comedy The One and Only starring Henry Winkler, Steve Gordon was hired to direct his own Arthur script for Orion. Gordon initially considered George Segal and John Belushi for the title role before casting Dudley Moore off the success of 10, in which the actor starred opposite Bo Derek. Arthur centers on alcoholic playboy Arthur Bach, who will be cut off from his family fortune unless he marries a woman he doesn’t love, which becomes complicated when he falls for working-class Linda, played by Liza Minnelli. At the time, Moore praised the script for its barrage of jokes: “Ten laughs a page, instead of one laugh every 10 pages.” Actress Anne DeSalvo, who played sex worker Gloria, tells The Hollywood Reporter that Moore, a classically trained pianist, would warmly greet her on set. “Dudley would be playing the piano, and he’d say, ‘Good morning, Anne,’ ” she recalls. “He was such …

Govs. Kevin Stitt and Wes Moore say civility can win general elections but primaries promote partisanship

Govs. Kevin Stitt and Wes Moore say civility can win general elections but primaries promote partisanship

Govs. Kevin Stitt, R-Okla., and Wes Moore, D-Md., on Friday blamed partisan primaries for making politics more extreme and called for bringing back “dignity” in politics and government. Asked whether dignity is a quality that could win a presidential election, Stitt told “Meet the Press” moderator Kristen Welker, “I would think so.” They were speaking during a moderated conversation with Moore and Tim Shriver at the National Governors Association summer meeting in Oklahoma City. “I think the pendulum is swinging,” the Oklahoma governor added. “Of course, you get to the general election, it wins. But the problem is, you got to get through the primaries.” Stitt argued that the most extreme candidate in a partisan primary is the one who tends to win, using himself and Moore as examples. “The danger to Moore is he’s going to get outflanked on his left. The danger to Stitt is he gets outflanked on his right,” Stitt said, adding later: “What’s amazing to me is we agree on 90% of the stuff.” Moore agreed with Stitt’s assertion that …

Wes Moore, the Preacher – The Atlantic

Wes Moore, the Preacher – The Atlantic

Read more about the Democrats who might run for president in 2028 here. Governor Wes Moore doesn’t care about saving the Democratic Party; if anything, he thinks it has stood in his way. When we met up in May, he quoted Jay-Z: “Industry shady, it need to be taken over.” The 2001 track is about Jay-Z’s rise to fame, and the ways the recording industry tried to exploit and co-opt him because he was “raisin’ the status quo up.” Moore was talking about a failed political system, and a Democratic Party that, he told me, “tried as hard as they could to get me not to run.” Jay-Z describes himself as a “renegade,” and Moore would like to be seen in a similar light—as the outsider who got himself to the top. Moore is the first Black governor of Maryland and the only Black governor serving in America today. At 47, he’s a relative newcomer to politics—he was the head of Robin Hood, a poverty-fighting foundation, until 2021—but he’s already being discussed as a possible …
