Julianne Moore Is a Collector of Louise Bourgeois and Nan Goldin

Tucked away in the West Village, actor Julianne Moore doesn’t seem to live like her Hollywood counterparts. She resides in a two-bedroom duplex with her husband, film director Bart Freundlich, that is also home to work by Louise Bourgeois, Nan Goldin, David Armstrong, and Robin Rice. “My taste is consistent, though it has evolved. I love modernism. But this apartment is prewar, and you have to address that. It’s not tiny, but it’s not massive, either, so materials and choices become even more important,” she told Architectural Digest for a feature in its upcoming November issue. Related Articles Her home in the West Village was constructed in the 1920s as a residential hotel with most of the units being used as studios or one-bedroom apartments. “Because of that, there’s a diverse group who live here, lots of young people in small apartments or older people who have been here for years. It’s super funky,” said Moore. Her home was renovated by architectural designer Oliver Freundlich, who is also her brother-in-law; the renovation makes space for …

Vanity Fair is excited to announce a new live event series, coming to Los Angeles and New York this fall. The Vanity Fair Screening Room will pair this year’s most compelling films with a slate of programming, including onstage panels and conversations with actors and filmmakers. The invitation-only events will convene an audience from the worlds of film, fashion, culture, politics, media, and tech, much like the magazine itself. Audiences will gather to preview “some yet-to-be-released films and meet the casts and crews of others,” said Mark Guiducci, Vanity Fair’s global editorial director. “Our hope is to inject the most important, most interesting, most electric films of the year directly into the cultural bloodstream.” The inaugural edition of Vanity Fair’s Screening Room will be held at LACMA’s Peter Zumthor–designed Steve Tisch Theater from November 13–15. Julianne Moore Accepts Zurich’s Golden Icon Award — in German

What can’t Julianne Moore do? The U.S. actress accepted Zurich Film Festival‘s lifetime achievement honor, the Golden Icon Award, in perfect German on Friday night. She was joined at the ceremony by Jesse Eisenberg, who directs her in his latest feature The Debut, a musical-comedy co-starring Paul Giamatti, which is screening at the 22nd edition in Switzerland this week. Moore called upon her own childhood growing up in Europe while making her acceptance speech. “Thank you for this wonderful honor,” said a translated version of her words. “I know that I am in Switzerland right now, but as a teenager, I lived in Germany. And my teacher there told me that I could become an actress. Had I not moved to Europe with my parents, I would not have had this wonderful life. And I wouldn’t be here with you tonight to speak my bad German to you.” On the carpet ahead of the presentation, the Oscar-winning actress beamed and said she was feeling “pretty good” about the prospect of receiving the prestigious Golden Icon. …

Julianne Moore, Paul Giamatti on making the funniest scene of the year

Julianne Moore, Paul Giamatti on making the funniest scene of the year

TELLURIDE, Colo. — Standing ovations at film festivals are a rite: part appreciation, part obligation, part a need to stretch your legs after sitting for a couple of hours. But for an audience to explode and roar their approval in the middle of a movie? That rarely, if ever, happens. Except it did, midway through the Telluride Film Festival world premiere of Jesse Eisenberg‘s delightful comedy “The Debut.” The applause followed a scene between Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti that took its audience on such an exhilarating journey that there was almost no choice but to cheer in admiration, as if to say: What did we just see? Sitting in the theater, Eisenberg, producer Emma Stone and Paul Giamatti looked at each other and asked themselves the same question but for a different reason. “It was hard to process and, at the same time, just so affirming,” Eisenberg told me a couple of hours after the premiere. The next day, sitting down to grab a quick bite with Moore and Giamatti, that giddy feeling had not dissipated, …

In ‘The Debut’, Julianne Moore Learns to Sing

In ‘The Debut’, Julianne Moore Learns to Sing

Mona starts out as a relatively ordinary woman who decides on a whim to audition for a local production of fictional musical Nosy Neighbors. With very little experience, she struggles to get the approval of Jerry, the demanding director (Paul Giamatti). When he pushes her to inhabit the character (an apartment building’s tool-belt-wielding superintendent), she takes that direction to the extreme, becoming a crazed method actor in a film that becomes more and more surreal and absurdist as it goes along. When Moore was sent Eisenberg’s script, she was in awe. “It’s one of the best scripts I’ve ever read in my entire life,” she says. “On page 30, I stood up and had to walk around my dining room for a second and catch my breath.” Speaking of breath, the film’s musical numbers required Moore to do something Dear Evan Hansen hadn’t: sing live, badly, in front of seasoned stage actors and singers. The supporting cast includes Tony nominee Colton Ryan, Tony winner Bonnie Milligan, singer-song-writer Halle Bailey, and stage legend and two-time Tony …
