How to add Google Drive to your computer (and why you should)

Google Drive is one of the best cloud storage services in the business, and there’s a lot you can do with it—from creating documents and spreadsheets in the cloud, to backing up important files and syncing them between devices. If you’ve only ever used Google Drive in the cloud, though, there’s one feature you might not be aware of: You can get all of your files stored locally too. You can even add Google Drive as a drive in File Explorer (on Windows) or Finder (on macOS). Windows has a hidden tool that makes installing apps much quicker

Windows has a hidden tool that makes installing apps much quicker

While Windows comes with plenty of apps out of the box, the real fun starts when you start installing third-party software. Think Spotify, Photoshop, Google Chrome, Apple Music, Steam, or whatever packages suit your needs. The process of actually installing this software often involves heading to the relevant official hosting page on the web and finding the download link. Since Windows 8 (which launched in 2012), there has also been the option of the Microsoft Store (previously the Windows Store)—offering a similar experience to the app store on your phone. There’s a third option too, though it’s less well-known: the Windows Package Manager. It runs in the Windows terminal, the text-based interface in Microsoft’s operating system, and while this makes it a little less user-friendly–at least at first–it’s speedy and lightweight, and great for installing all kinds of programs. Getting started with the Windows Package Manager The Windows Package Manager can list everything installed on your system. How to use the emergency satellite features on Google Pixel and iPhone

How to use the emergency satellite features on Google Pixel and iPhone

If you own a recent iPhone or Pixel phone, you’ve got an emergency backup communication option in a crisis: satellite messaging. Introduced by Apple with the iPhone 14 and iOS 16 in 2022 (and available on all iPhones since), it’s now available on the latest Pixel 9 series phones with Android 14 too. The idea is that when you’re in difficulty and outside of cell signal range—for example, if you get lost or injured while hiking in the wilderness—you can use satellite networks to contact emergency services and direct them to your location. The bandwidth is limited but enough to send some texts. Your phone needs a special combination of hardware and software to connect to a satellite out in space, which is why it’s not available on all phones yet. (Samsung is likely to add support next year.) However, it’s already saving lives across the world, and if you do have a compatible phone, you can use it for free. How to use emergency satellite SOS on Pixel phones Satellite connectivity is exclusive to …

Freetube is the best way to watch YouTube

Freetube is the best way to watch YouTube

YouTube’s website is a rabbit hole, designed to keep you watching as long as possible. Freetube won’t cure your addiction, but it does let you take control over your relationship with the video streaming site.  The application allows you to take total control of what does and doesn’t show up on the screen. Don’t like comments? Turn them off. Don’t want to see recommended videos, or for the next video to automatically play? You can disable that too. You can replace attention-grabbing thumbnails with more generic ones, replace ALL CAPS HEADLINES with title case ones, and generally just turn YouTube into a tool you can use to find and watch videos instead of a trap for capturing as much of your attention as possible. And there are privacy benefits too. With Freetube your watch history is stored only on your computer, not YouTube’s servers. This is an application that puts you back in control of your video watching habit.  Watching without tracking or ads To get started you just need to download the application. It’s …

While to most Scarlett Johansson may be best known as Natasha Romanoff or Charlotte or Annie Braddock, to her daughter and son, she’s just mom.
