Global IT outage: NHS warns of GP disruption next week – as travellers report long delays and lost baggage | UK News

Global IT outage: NHS warns of GP disruption next week – as travellers report long delays and lost baggage | UK News

The NHS has warned of “continued disruption” to GP services into next week following the global IT outage – as airline passengers reported lengthy delays and lost baggage this weekend. The outage spread globally on Friday morning after an update from global cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike knocked many Microsoft Windows PCs offline with a “blue screen of death” appearing on screens. The company’s founder confirmed it was caused by a bug in the update and not a cyber attack, as some had feared. NHS England reported its systems were “coming back online in most areas” on Saturday afternoon but were “still running slightly slower than usual”. A spokesperson said: “As practices recover from the loss of IT systems on Friday, there may be some continued disruption, particularly to GP services, in some areas into next week as practices work to rebook appointments.” Image: An NHS warning about the IT outage. American politicians forget: disruption and disorder are the point of protests | Patrick Gaspard

American politicians forget: disruption and disorder are the point of protests | Patrick Gaspard

“In America, the student movement has been seriously radicalized wherever police and police brutality intervened in essentially nonviolent demonstrations: occupations of administration buildings, sit-ins, et cetera.” – Hannah Arendt, observing Columbia University protests in 1968. When you’ve been in the midst of a demonstration that devolves into chaos and violence, you find out in a hurry if you’re able to put aside your own terror to still uphold the needs of the many and to maintain the discipline of your values. This has happened to me more than once. That tension has always been a reminder to me that democracy is a choice and that citizenship is a full-contact sport. The Gaza-driven protests by college students, and the response to them by university presidents and law enforcement have dominated the media and roiled American politics at the start of this consequential electoral season. Scenes of tent encampments, chanting activists, occupied facilities, have conjured comparisons to the ungovernable activism of previous generations that left an indelible influence on the culture. Politicians, whose policies are ultimately the …

Storm Kathleen: Scotland hit by high winds, heavy rain and travel disruption | UK weather

High winds and heavy rain from Storm Kathleen persisted through Sunday, battering parts of Scotland and Ireland and disrupting travel. The Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (Sepa) had 18 regional flood alerts and 37 flood warnings in place in Scotland. They have been in force since Saturday. The Met Office has also issued a yellow wind warning from 9am on Sunday covering parts of the west and northern Highlands, the Isle of Skye and the Hebrides. It will remain in force until 11:59pm. Winds as high as 73mph were recorded in Drumalbin, South Lanarkshire. A previous warning stretched from the Scottish Borders to just south of Stirling. It spanned the west coast, throughout much of central Scotland, and ended just short of the east coast. Janine Hensman, Sepa’s flood duty manager, said: “Across Sunday, we’ll continue to see high tides, storm surges and large waves across coastal areas. This combination is particularly dangerous – especially around high tides. There is real danger to life from wave overtopping, particularly around causeways, coastal roads and paths. “While the …

Singapore Airlines to resume flights to 3 Chinese cities from Apr 22 after disruption due to ‘regulatory reasons’

Singapore Airlines to resume flights to 3 Chinese cities from Apr 22 after disruption due to ‘regulatory reasons’

SINGAPORE: Singapore Airlines (SIA) flights to the Chinese cities of Chongqing, Chengdu and Xiamen will resume from Apr 22 after a three-week suspension. The suspension, from Mar 31 to Apr 21, was due to “regulatory reasons”, an SIA spokesperson said on Monday (Apr 1) without providing further details. Before the pause in flights, SIA operated daily services to Chengdu and Xiamen, and flew three times a week to Chongqing. When flights to the three cities resume, services will begin with five times weekly flights from Apr 22 to Apr 28. Thereafter, it will be increased to daily services, the airline said in response to CNA’s queries. POSSIBLE REASONS FOR DISRUPTION The period of suspension follows a similar situation last year when SIA flights to five cities, including Chengdu, Chongqing and Xiamen were halted. Services to those three cities resumed on Nov 26 last year. Aviation analysts CNA spoke to suggested a few reasons for service disruptions, including capacity limits and the unavailability of flight slots. Independent analyst Brendan Sobie said that the suspension might be because the carrier had …

Easter travel delays forecast for UK due to poor weather and rail disruption | Transport

Easter travel delays forecast for UK due to poor weather and rail disruption | Transport

A long Good Friday looms for many drivers and rail passengers who are heading off for a UK getaway, as the Easter weekend collides with the start of school holidays, engineering works and turbulent weather. With more than 14 million leisure trips planned by drivers over the coming days, motorists have been warned to expect delays on many routes. Additional cars could be forced on to the roads because of major railway line closures, with strikes hampering possible return train journeys next week. According to the RAC, some car journeys could take twice as long as normal as many schools are breaking up at the start of the bank holiday weekend this year, leading to an increase in getaway traffic. Meanwhile, all trains in and out of London Euston on the west coast mainline to cities including Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester and Glasgow will be cancelled from Friday to Monday, with passengers wishing to travel diverted via rail replacement buses to Milton Keynes. Getaway hell was expected to kick off on Thursday afternoon, with the biggest …

Baltimore bridge collapse: US braces for supply chain disruption | Baltimore bridge collapse

The US transportation secretary, Pete Buttigieg, has warned of “major and protracted impact to supply chains” following the closure of the Port of Baltimore for the forseeable future after Tuesday’s catastrophic bridge collapse, though some experts said the impact was likely to be targeted to particular regions and industries. Spanning more than 2km and with four lanes of traffic, the Francis Scott Key Bridge – a vital artery in Baltimore’s industrial heartland – took nine years to plan and almost five to build, but came down in under a minute after being struck by a cargo ship in the early hours of Tuesday. At least six people are presumed dead after the bridge collapsed into the Patapsco River, and the state of Maryland has declared a state of emergency. The Maryland governor, Wes Moore, said the disaster was heartbreaking. The missing – all members of a construction crew filling potholes on the bridge – were described as “hard-working, humble men” and are reported to have been from Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador and Mexico. The US’s …
