Patients evacuated and scans cancelled after Stockport hospital ceilings fall in | NHS

Parts of ceilings have fallen in at two key units of a decrepit NHS hospital, forcing it to evacuate patients and cancel X-rays and scans, the Guardian can reveal. The problems at Stepping Hill hospital in Stockport, which is plagued by leaks and major structural defects, have prompted claims it is “dangerous for both patients and staff”. The first partial ceiling collapse occurred on 4 March in the Stockport hospital’s radiology department because of a leak, which meant it had to cancel several scheduled procedures. The trust refused to disclose how many appointments were affected. The second collapse happened the next day in its critical care unit, where seriously ill patients receiving intensive and high-dependency care are treated. Staff had to move quickly to get patients out of the 13-bed unit to ensure no one was hurt. Evacuated patients were initially cared for in some of Stepping Hill’s 20 operating theatres. Some were then transferred to a nearby hospital while repairs were carried out. “These reports from Stepping Hill are both shocking and depressing,” said …

Annual River Thames open-water swimming event cancelled over pollution | UK | News

An annual open-water swimming event first held in the River Thames in 1890 has been cancelled this year because of fears about sewage in the water. The Boulter’s to Bray Swim in Maidenhead, Berkshire, involves competitors completing a 5km (3.1 mile), 2.8km or 1.4km swim in the water. However, the trust that manages the event said it was “unable to find any satisfactory way” in which it could be assured the river would be safe for swimmers on July 6, reports the BBC. Anyone who entered this year’s swim will see their entry deferred until the next event or refunded. The Boulter’s to Bray Swim Trust said it heoped there will be “tighter controls on what is discharged into rivers” by 2025. It said there should also be “clear guidelines for recreational users” wishing to enjoy the water. Swim trustee Keith Dixon told the BBC he would not feel safe swimming in the Thames this year, despite having done so for the past 16. He said: “If I can’t look myself in the mirror and …

Ryanair has cancelled over 300 flights affecting thousands of passengers from the UK. The airline has issued a warning to 50,000 of its passengers who will be affected by last minute cancellations. ‘Cancelled’ Welsh hymns about mental illness and addiction to be sung again | Wales

A trove of Welsh hymns believed to have been “cancelled” by all-male committees because they did not like their open approach to issues such as mental health and addiction has been unearthed and is being performed at 50 chapels across the country. The Welsh folk singer Lleuwen Steffan was working in a museum archive when she came across recordings of Welsh-language hymns she had never heard before. “I knew that they were not in the current hymn book. I checked the older editions and spoke to experts on Welsh hymns and indeed they were not in any of the older hymn books either.” The hymns were recorded by the historian Robin Gwyndaf, an expert on folklore and oral history, who worked at St Fagans National Museum of History from 1964. He travelled the country, recording rhymes, riddles, poetry and folk hymns. Many of the hymns date back to the 18th century and passed down through the generations. Steffan said: “They’re conversational and the lyrics feel so current. There were committees who would choose what hymns …
