Police update as bomb squad called to North Bristol

More details have emerged after the bomb squad was called yesterday (September 8) to North Bristol, with a device being exploded in a popular open space.

Police have today (September 9) said that a “suspected historic ordnance” was found while work was being carried out at an area of North Bristol. It was then transported to Clifton Downs where it was detonated.

The ordnance was found at 10.41am yesterday (Tuesday, September 8 in Tormarton Crescent, Henbury, while work was being carried out.

Avon and Somerset Police were called and the road was closed, with a 100 metre cordon being put into place.

The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team then attended and collected the device.

The object was taken to Clifton Downs and detonated.

Police said the incident was stood down at around 3.35pm and the closures and cordons were lifted.

A witness to the explosion claimed the object was a “hand grenade” and that, before the detonation took place, sandbags were used to encase the object.

It is unclear at this time whether the object was a suspected hand grenade. The Ministry of Defence has been contacted for further details.
