North Korea ramps up shell deliveries to Putin, Seoul says – POLITICO

North Korea ramps up shell deliveries to Putin, Seoul says – POLITICO

“While North Korea’s arms factories operate at 30 percent capacity due to shortages of raw materials and power, certain factories are operating at full capacity, which primarily produce weapons and shells for Russia,” Shin said. Shin’s comments come as Ukraine struggles with ammunition shortages du e to delays in Western aid, as Russia’s full-scale invasion enters its third year. A massive tranche of American military aid has become snarled up in the U.S. Congress, with many House Republicans unwilling to continue funding Kyiv’s war effort. Last week, EU top diplomat Josep Borrell wrote a letter to EU foreign and defense ministers calling on them to support Kyiv. “Ukrainian soldiers are hampered in their fight against the aggressor — because they lack ammunition,” he said. In November, the EU condemned reports of arms transfers between Pyongyang and Moscow. “The EU is deeply concerned by reports about arms transfers and military cooperation between the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the Russian Federation for the use in Russia’s illegal, unprovoked and unjustified war of aggression against …

North and Midlands to share £4.7bn local transport fund after HS2 rail leg scrapped | UK News

North and Midlands to share £4.7bn local transport fund after HS2 rail leg scrapped | UK News

The prime minister has revealed how some of the money from abandoning the HS2 northern leg will be reallocated. Northern England will get £2.5bn and the Midlands £2.2bn after plans to run the high-speed line to the North were scrapped last year. The cash will go to a “local transport fund” to help towns, rural areas and smaller cities. Councils and local authorities will decide how to spend the money, the government said. For example using it to mend potholes, build roads, improve mass transit or renovate bus stations. The announcement comes as Rishi Sunak holds a cabinet meeting in northern England on Monday – the location being kept secret for security reasons. October’s decision not to build HS2 past the Midlands was criticised by those who said it made a mockery of ‘levelling-up’ and ‘Northern Powerhouse’ pledges. The high-speed track will now run between London and Birmingham, with the Manchester section abandoned after concerns about mounting costs. Downing Street said Mr Sunak would tell the cabinet that MPs and ministers must “hold local authorities …

Europe remains hard to crack for North American GPs

Europe remains hard to crack for North American GPs

A few years ago, setting up shop in Europe was the soup du jour for North American VCs. From OMERs and Lightspeed to Bessemer Venture Partners, the market attracted firms of all sizes, and the Spotify IPO seemed to wake up North American VCs to Europe’s potential to create outsized exits. VCs wanted to make sure they didn’t miss out on the next wave. But it’s unclear that they were able to catch it. Trends haven’t fully reversed since the happy days of 2021, but they’ve come pretty close. Still, the European startup market has grown rapidly over the last decade. Deal volume has more than doubled in that time frame, according to PitchBook data, and there have been numerous success stories like Klarna, Deliveroo and Arrival. North American VCs, understandably, want a piece of that market, but setting up a successful, long-term strategy in the region hasn’t proved easy. Big names like Coatue and OMERs formally pulled out of the region in recent months, and the venture funds that have remained are significantly less …

Rishi Sunak’s £5 billion transport plan for north | Politics | News

RISHI Sunak vowed to revitalise Britain’s forgotten regions by pumping almost £5billion into improving transport links. The PM will use cash saved by scrapping the northern leg of HS2 to upgrade roads, rail and bus services in “red wall” areas. Laying down the battle lines for the general election, he pledged to “fire up the engine of the north once again”. Mr Sunak will unveil details of his plan – aimed at building “a better future for our children and grandchildren” – at a Cabinet summit in Yorkshire. He told the Sunday Express: “Our northern towns and cities have shaped the world – nurturing people who have created whole industries, won Nobel Prizes for pioneering research, and written some of the greatest music and literature anywhere on earth. “As a northern MP, I think the defining feature of the north is its talent. And as Prime Minister, I’m determined to unleash it. “That’s why I am bringing the whole Cabinet to Yorkshire and the Humber – to inject even more energy into our mission to …

Disaster for Humza Yousaf as brazen hypocrisy over North Sea oil laid bare by Tories | Politics | News

Disaster for Humza Yousaf as brazen hypocrisy over North Sea oil laid bare by Tories | Politics | News

Humza Yousaf‘s position on North Sea oil is as slippery as the stuff itself, the Scottish Conservatives deputy leader has claimed. Meghan Gallacher attacked the First Minister of Scotland’s record on oil and gas in an op-ed published in the Scottish Daily Express on Saturday (February 24). The MSP for Central Scotland accused the Scottish National Party‘s stance on oil and gas as “reliably worthless”, citing the SNP’s response to Labour’s energy policies which include a windfall tax on energy giants. Sir Keir Starmer has said his party will raise the levy to 78 percent and extend it to 2029. Mr Yousaf then claimed that this has caused “extreme anger” in the north east of Scotland. The First Minister favours maintaining the windfall tax at 75 percent and accuses Labour of planning to use the extra funds raised to pay for nuclear plants in England. Ms Gallacher said Labour has set its face against any further development, even though experts agree that this would be “profoundly” damaging to the economy, energy security and environment. She …

‘Too early’ to say when North Wales Main Line will be electrified, says minister | UK News

‘Too early’ to say when North Wales Main Line will be electrified, says minister | UK News

It is “too early” to say when the North Wales Main Line will be electrified, a government minister has said. Mark Harper, the UK government’s transport secretary, said the project to electrify the line will involve “unprecedented investment” in the region. The Department for Transport says the £1bn investment in improvements to the line will be funded after plans to extend HS2 north of Birmingham were scrapped. Politics latest: Boost for speaker amid pressure over future There have previously been calls for Wales to get “up to £5bn” by re-designating the project as England-only. The UK government argues HS2 is a “national project” which benefits both countries, despite the line not entering Wales. Asked when the North Wales Main Line project will happen, Mr Harper said it is “too early” to give a timetable. He said he was “not going to pluck a figure out of the air”, adding: “I think people are very realistic.” The 126-mile route runs between Crewe, Warrington, Wrexham and Holyhead. At the port in Holyhead, ferry services run to and …

Dog owners warned after sheep ‘attacks’ in North Wales | UK News

Dog owners have been warned to keep their dogs on a lead after two separate attacks on flocks of sheep. North Wales Police is investigating after it received a report of a sheep attack in Talysarn, Gwynedd, on 18 February. Police say a dog was seen running loose in a field at around 3.45pm and went on to injure a pregnant sheep. PC Michelle Allsup, from the force’s Rural Crime Team, said the fact the sheep was in lamb was “very concerning for its owner”. “Lambing season is now upon us and farmers are working at all hours to protect their livestock from predators and to ensure their lambs are born fit and healthy,” she added. “Not only does sheep worrying inflict suffering and distress on the animals, but the impact of these attacks also has a devastating effect for the farming community, both financially and mentally.” The attack comes after a sheep in lamb was killed and another three were injured in Flintshire last week. Earlier this month, 22 sheep – including lambs – …
