Massive Solar Storm to Trigger Northern Lights Across North America

Massive Solar Storm to Trigger Northern Lights Across North America

[ad_1] Here’s where they’ll be visible. Nightsky Invite A massive solar storm is blasting the Earth’s atmosphere with charged particles, resulting in spectacular auroras that will be visible across the United States this weekend. The storm is expected to hit our planet on Friday night, growing to a “severe” Category G4 geomagnetic on Saturday night, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. That’s one level short of the strongest storms on its space weather scale and the first predicted G4 storm since 2005, as the Washington Post reports. The auroras are expected to be visible as far south as Alabama. We highly recommend finding a dark location away from too much light pollution and cloud cover to watch the spectacle unfold. A handy map provided by the NOAA shows where you’ll be able to see the show. Stormy Suniels During a solar storm, which can either be triggered by solar flares, coronal mass ejections or other solar activity, huge amounts of plasma are blasted across outer space. Some of these electrically charged particles collide with …

North Macedonia’s right-wing opposition scores victory in elections

[ad_1] WASHINGTON —  North Macedonia elected its first woman president Wednesday as the ruling Social Democratic Union of Macedonia suffered historic losses in presidential and parliamentary elections. With nearly all the votes counted, university professor Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova, the presidential candidate of the right-wing VMRO-DPMNE opposition party, won nearly 65% of the vote, with incumbent President Stevo Pendarovski winning 29%, according to the country’s State Election Commission. In the parliamentary contest, the VMRO-DPMNE-led coalition Your Macedonia won 43% of the votes, giving it 58 of the parliament’s 120 seats, just short of a majority. Although it was uncertain on election day whether the 40% turnout threshold for the presidential election would be reached, due to calls for a boycott, the State Election Commission reported that turnout exceeded 46%. In her first post-election public address, President-elect Siljanovska-Davkova promised to “act as the president of all citizens, of all ethnic groups, of party members, of those who are not in parties, because a president, especially not if she is a woman, cannot unite and search for unity if …

Court rules North Carolina Catholic school could fire gay teacher who announced his wedding online

[ad_1] RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — A Catholic school in North Carolina had the right to fire a gay teacher who announced his marriage on social media a decade ago, a federal appeals court ruled Wednesday, reversing a judge’s earlier decision. A panel of the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Richmond, Virginia, reversed a 2021 ruling that Charlotte Catholic High School and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charlotte had violated Lonnie Billard’s federal employment protections against sex discrimination under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. The school said Billard wasn’t invited back as a substitute teacher because of his “advocacy in favor of a position that is opposed to what the church teaches about marriage,” a court document said. U.S. District Judge Max Cogburn determined Billard — a full-time teacher for a decade until 2012 — was a lay employee for the limited purpose of teaching secular classes. Cogburn said a trial would still have to be held to determine appropriate relief for him. A 2020 ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court declared …

‘The music industry is smoke and mirrors’: how DIY duo the Lovely Eggs are keeping the north weird | Music

[ad_1] Walking through Lancaster on a sunny spring day, Holly Ross has a theory about her home town and its inhabitants. Once towering over the city was Lancaster Moor hospital, formerly the Lancaster county lunatic asylum, which was home to thousands of patients. “People were sent here from all over the place,” she says. “There was a care in the community programme and people settled locally, so you had this real collection of characters – amazing artists who burned themselves out on acid and ended up here. There was one pub they all used to congregate in, a real bunch of outsiders and freaks – and I use that as a term of endearment because that included us.” For the best part of 20 years, Ross has been making outsider art in the duo the Lovely Eggs with her husband, David Blackwell. The pair play psychedelic punk and infectious garage rock, and – despite playing sizeable UK venues and attracting collaborators such as Iggy Pop – are a fervently DIY operation. They run their own …

Megyn Kelly slams Kristi Noem’s ‘lies’ following dog, North Korea fallout: ‘She’s been exposed’

[ad_1] Megyn Kelly sharply criticized South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem (R) on Wednesday for writing an inaccurate account of a supposed meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in her new book and for changing her story repeatedly amid the fallout from a separate passage that details Noem’s decision to shoot her dog. Noem has been repeatedly pressed about the book’s passage in which she describes meeting with the North Korean leader, but she has declined to say that the account is false —even though the passage has since been redacted. She has instead insisted that “I don’t talk about personal meetings with world leaders,” and that, “When this was brought to my attention, I immediately took actions and asked to have his name removed.” Noem repeated the same response when asked how she did not notice the error when recording the audio. In an interview on NewsNation’s “Elizabeth Vargas Reports,” Kelly responded to Noem’s positioning on the issue, saying, “She wrote it, read it, endorsed it and tried to sell it.” “She got caught because she didn’t think …

[ad_1] Meanwhile, VMRO-DPMNE candidate Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova will become the country’s first female president — a largely ceremonial position — having won 64.9 percent support with 87 percent of the votes counted, the results showed. Voters in the tiny Balkan country of 2 million have expressed frustration with corruption, the slow pace of reform, and the sluggish advance of North Macedonia’s bid to join the European Union. In 2018 the country reached a historic agreement, changing its name and constitution and ending a decades-long dispute with Greece. The deal allowed Skopje to join NATO in 2020; for the past two years, however, Bulgaria has blocked North Macedonia’s EU bid, demanding its constitution be amended to acknowledge the country’s Bulgarian minority.
