Several prominent UK retailers, including Asda, Amazon, eBay, and TK Maxx, have issued urgent product recalls, urging shoppers to stop using certain items immediately and claim refunds. The recalls cover a broad range of everyday products, from household appliances to children’s goods and cosmetics, all of which have been identified as posing significant risks to health and safety.

The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) is urging customers who have bought the affected items to “stop using the product immediately”. Below is a summary of the recalled products and the reasons for their recall:

Wednesday Addams Costume sold via eBay

A children’s Wednesday Addams costume sold through eBay has been urgently recalled after failing critical fire safety tests. The recall follows regulators finding that the black wig included with the costume failed to meet the flammability standards outlined in BS EN 71-2, a European and British Standard that specifies toy safety and the categories of flammable materials prohibited in all toys.

Testing revealed that the hair continued to burn for 10 to 15 seconds after the ignition source was removed, far exceeding the two-second safety limit.

The OPSS cautioned that if brought into contact with a flame, the wig could ignite and burn for an extended period, placing wearers at serious risk of burns. Several required documents and safety markings were also found to be absent.

The product fails to meet the requirements of the Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011. The recall was launched by distributor TG Derby Ltd, and the eBay listing has since been taken down.

Anyone who bought the costume is advised to stop using it immediately and keep it out of reach of young children.

Omani Brothers Umm Khammas Henna Paste

A product recall has been announced for Omani Brothers Umm Khammas Henna Paste following the OPSS’s identification of a “serious chemical risk” relating to the presence of phenol, a substance prohibited in cosmetic products.

Phenol can result in serious skin burns and eye damage and is also toxic if swallowed. The OPSS also raised concerns regarding insufficient labelling and information accompanying the product.

Budget Pound Plus, the retailer, has withdrawn the product from sale and commenced the recall. Consumers are advised to discontinue use of the paste immediately and to contact the retailer or supplier to arrange a replacement or refund.

2200W Vertical Steam Iron sold via eBay

The 2200W Vertical Steam Iron sold on eBay has been recalled owing to a high fire risk because its plug is missing a fuse. The item has now been removed by eBay.

The appliance poses a significant fire hazard because the plug is missing a fuse and does not meet the dimensional specifications of BS 1363. A compliant fuse is necessary to ensure the safe operation of the product under fault conditions, and its omission could result in the plug overheating and/or exploding.

The pins were also below the minimum dimensions stipulated by the standard. The product’s warnings and markings also need enhancement.

The product does not meet the requirements of the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 or the Plugs and Sockets (Safety) Regulations 1994.

Anyone with the iron is advised to “stop using the product immediately” and contact eBay for a replacement or refund.

LEDSone UK Ltd AC-DC Power Supply Adapter

A major recall has been announced for the LEDSone UK Ltd AC-DC Power Supply Adapter after the OPSS identified a serious fire risk. They discovered that the product’s mains plug is not equipped with an appropriate fuse link and does not meet the required dimensions in accordance with British Standard 1363.

Without a compliant fuse, the plug could overheat or even explode during a fault, posing a considerable danger to users. Further examination disclosed that the live and neutral pins are too narrow, the ISOD pin is shorter than permitted, and the plug fails insulation standards.

Additionally, the product is missing essential instructions and vital safety information for consumers.

The power supply adapter fails to satisfy the requirements of the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 or the Plugs and Sockets (Safety) Regulations 1994. Consequently, LEDSone UK Limited (Electricalsone) has withdrawn the adapter from sale.

Consumers who have purchased this AC-DC 12V 5A adapter, which is sold in a black and green box, should stop using it immediately and contact the retailer for a refund or replacement.

Moon-shaped Baby Sleep Pillow

A baby sleep pillow has been removed from sale on the online marketplace Wish after safety officials determined it presents a serious suffocation risk. The recall follows concerns that placing pillows or soft toys in an infant’s sleeping area can heighten the risk of overheating and airway obstruction — factors associated with sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS).

According to the NHS, SIDS, formerly known as ‘cot death’, “is the sudden and unexplained death of an apparently healthy baby aged up to 12 months old”. Officials have warned that the pillow fails to meet the requirements of the General Product Safety Regulations 2005.

Parents and carers are strongly advised to stop using this product immediately and ensure it is kept away from babies.

According to the OPSS: “Owners are advised to stop using the product immediately and keep it out of reach of children. Contact the seller for a refund.”

Asda has broadened its product recall after discovering that a number of ladies’ handbags present a serious chemical hazard (Image: Ceri Breeze via Getty Images)

Asda Ladies’ Handbags

Asda has broadened its product recall after discovering that a number of ladies’ handbags present a serious chemical hazard to consumers. The supermarket giant is urging shoppers to stop using the affected bags immediately and return them for a full refund.

The recall, originally announced in September and now extended to cover additional products, affects several handbag models found to contain excessive levels of Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) — a chemical that can be harmful to children and may lead to reproductive health complications. According to the OPSS, the bags fail to comply with the standards outlined in the REACH Regulations 2008.

Customers are urged to review the complete list of recalled handbags and return any affected products to their local Asda branch, where a receipt is not necessary to obtain a refund. Additional details can be found on the Asda recall page or by telephoning 0330 053 0111.

Asda said: “At the time of shipment, this product successfully passed all required tests. However, subsequent testing has identified that it may contain phthalates at levels exceeding the permitted regulatory limit.

“Certain phthalates, including Di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP), are subject to regulatory restrictions because prolonged exposure above specified limits may pose potential health risks and possibly cause damage to the reproductive system.

“While no safety incidents have been reported, we are taking this action to ensure compliance with applicable regulations and to maintain our commitment to consumer safety.”

Anyone who has the bags should return them to an Asda branch for a full refund. No receipt is required.

Asda added: “We are very sorry for any inconvenience caused.”

Piper K Bag Charms – Seal Lifeguard and Duck in Dungarees sold by TK Maxx

TK Maxx has announced a recall for certain bag charms following safety tests which identified a choking hazard for young children. The recall concerns products featuring a metal spring clip that can detach too easily, leaving a small component that poses a serious risk if swallowed.

Authorities have warned that the O-ring, once separated, is sufficiently small to enter a child’s mouth and could obstruct the airway, creating a potentially fatal risk.

The recall was initiated after the item failed to meet minimum strength standards, with safety regulators confirming it does not comply with the Toys (Safety) Regulations 2011.

Purchasers are urged to stop using the product without delay and return it to TK Maxx for a refund or exchange.

TK Maxx said: “We are recalling these products because the required safety testing documentation is not available. This means we cannot confirm that the products meet the relevant safety requirements. Small parts of the key chain may come loose during use and could pose a choking hazard to young children.

“If you have purchased this product, please stop using it immediately and return to any TK Maxx or Homesense store. You can get a full refund or replacement.”

A recall has been issued for Ancient Wisdom Bath Donut products (Image: Ancient Wisdom)

Ancient Wisdom Bath Donut

A recall has been issued for Ancient Wisdom Bath Donut products after they were found to present a serious choking risk to children and other vulnerable individuals. The bath products, which bear a striking resemblance to food items in shape, colour and size, could easily be confused with sweets by young children.

Furthermore, small components of the product may break off, posing a choking hazard if put in the mouth.

The local authority has mandated the immediate removal of these items from sale, with the wholesaler, AW Aromatics Limited (“Ancient Wisdom”), carrying out the recall. The products fail to meet the requirements of Regulation (EC) 1223/2009 (the ‘Cosmetics Regulation’) or the Food Imitations (Safety) Regulations 1989.

Consumers are advised to cease using the bath donuts immediately and keep them out of reach of children. Anyone who has bought these products should contact the retailer or wholesaler to arrange a replacement or refund.
