So You’ve Got a ‘Fortnite’ Accent and You Want to Get Rid of It

So You’ve Got a ‘Fortnite’ Accent and You Want to Get Rid of It

Everyone has an accent. Typically, it’s a marker for where someone grew up, or in some celebrity cases, a bored rich person trying on a new persona. But did you know Fortnite players have their own accent, too? The so-called “Fortnite accent” refers to how players speak while playing Epic Games’ massively popular online battle royale. After watching a solid 20 minutes of YouTube shorts and TikToks about it, I’ve determined it’s a specific sort of cheery, high-pitched tone that sounds a lot like the stereotype of a teen girl uptalking, or ending even declarative statements in a way that sounds like a question. Or, as one Reddit user asking how to shed the accent put it, “I speak like a 8 year old.” Sadly, their plea for help only got one response: “what in gods name is a fortnite accent.” For years, across YouTube and TikTok, players have recorded themselves playing while speaking in the accent, or trying not to do it. (Headphone warning: there’s a lot of screaming in those clips.) Adam Aleksic, …

The Best Photographer You’ve Never Heard Of: An Introduction to Tseng Kwong Chi

Once, the United States was known for sending forth the world’s most complained-about international tourists; today, that dubious distinction arguably belongs to China. But it wasn’t so long ago that the Chinese tourist was a practically unheard-of phenomenon, especially in the West. That’s an important contextual element to understand when considering the work of photographer Tseng Kwong Chi, who traveled around America taking pictures of himself at various recognizable monuments and landmarks while wearing a suit most commonly associated with Chairman Mao. The figure that emerged from this project is the subject of the new Nerdwriter video above. “He called this character ‘an ambiguous ambassador,’ and, in a series he called ‘East Meets West,’ posed him — posed himself — in front of various icons of touristic America,” writes Brian Dillon in a New Yorker piece on Tseng’s work. “He leaps into the air in front of the Brooklyn Bridge, stands impassive beside Mickey Mouse at Disneyland, gazes off into the distance with Niagara Falls behind him.” Inspired by Richard Nixon’s 1972 visit to China and Deng …

‘You’ve got a willy, so you’re a man’ – Transgender case tribunal barrister

‘You’ve got a willy, so you’re a man’ – Transgender case tribunal barrister

A barrister representing a nurse who objected to sharing a changing room with a transgender doctor has described her legal argument as “you’ve got a willy, so you’re a man, innit?” Naomi Cunningham represented veteran nurse Sandie Peggie at an employment tribunal against NHS Fife and Dr Beth Upton. Ms Peggie, who has worked at the Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy for 30 years, took the health board and Dr Upton to tribunal after being suspended following an incident on Christmas Eve 2023 in the female changing room. She lodged a complaint of sexual harassment or harassment related to a protected belief under section 26 of the Equality Act 2010 regarding three incidents when they shared a changing room: indirect harassment, victimisation and whistleblowing. Ms Peggie was suspended on January 3, 2024, after Dr Upton made an allegation of bullying and harassment, the tribunal heard. It has adjourned until July but the case prompted the Equality and Human Rights Commissioner to write to NHS Fife and the Scottish Government to remind them about workplace legislation around …

Martin Clunes on nepotism in the arts: ‘If you’re s*** you won’t get the gig. You’ve got to punch your weight’ | Ents & Arts News

Martin Clunes says the entertainment industry is “too on-show to carry a dolt”, and the children of successful actors don’t get work just because of who their parents are. The 63-year-old actor is currently starring in county lines drama Out There opposite Louis Ashbourne Serkis, which sees a single-parent farmer and his teenage son tangle with drug-dealing gangs in Monmouthshire. Image: Clunes and Louis Ashbourne Serkis. Pic: ITV Serkis is the son of Lord Of The Rings actor Andy Serkis and Sherwood star Lorraine Ashbourne, and starred in his first TV show, Inspector Morse prequel Endeavour, when he was just 10. Clunes tells Sky News: “I was involved in [Serkis’s] casting, so it was just like, ‘Oh, this is Andy and Lorraine’s boy. Oh, that’s interesting. If he’s s***, he won’t get the… Sorry, if he’s no good, he won’t get the gig’. “You’ve got to punch your weight, cos that’s how it works, I think the industry is too on-show to carry a dolt. If someone was awful at it and they just got …

If you’ve been sitting all day, try these three easy hip-strengthening moves

Spent the last few days sitting on your couch? The festive period is great for rest and relaxation, but your hips might feel sore after a sedentary spell. Prolonged sitting can actually weaken your hip flexors—the muscles at the front of your hips—which can lead to discomfort, back and hip pain and even poor posture. Hip strength is essential for everyday activities, from climbing stairs to lunging at the gym and even just walking. That’s why I’m a huge fan of hip-strengthening exercises. Not sure if you have weak hips? Here’s a quick test. Lie flat on your back with your legs straight. Bring one knee toward your chest and hold it there with your hands. Let go and see if your knee stays close to your chest. If your knee drops or feels difficult to keep close to your chest, tight or weak hip flexors could be to blame. Ready to stretch and strengthen your hips? Try these three moves. How to do the three-move hip strengthening routine Glute bridge: 2 sets x 10 …

The most important metal you’ve probably never heard of

The most important metal you’ve probably never heard of

From industry-changing technology to sourcing and exploration, First Tellurium is helping to spur a revolution for the critical metal tellurium. For decades, tellurium sat quietly in the background of industry, serving as a speciality metal for alloys, rubber vulcanisation and ceramics. In the early 1990s, researchers began using tellurium to improve solar panels. Today, cadmium-telluride (CdTe)-based solar cells represent the world’s leading thin-film photovoltaic technology, led by Ohio-based First Solar Inc. Beyond solar power, new applications for tellurium are ushering in revolutionary advances in sectors such as thermoelectric devices, lithium batteries, medicine and more. The metal has distinct and valuable properties, especially as a semiconductor. At least five countries, including the US, Canada, Australia, and Japan, have designated tellurium as a critical and strategic metal, and they are looking to source more of it domestically. First Tellurium Corp in Canada and the United States First Tellurium is the only resource company in North America focused on exploring for tellurium. The company’s two key mineral projects – Deer Horn in British Columbia and Klondike in Colorado …

That box full of wires you’ve kept for years could help avert a looming crisis | UK News

The unused cables and broken tech items you have tucked away at home could help steer the UK away from a copper crisis, according to new research. The research by campaign group Recycle Your Electricals (RYE) suggests the UK has 1.3 billion unused or binned electricals, including 627 million cables, which could hold the answer to the nation’s fast-approaching gap in the supply of copper to meet growing demand. Copper is a vital resource in the UK’s push to decarbonise the economy, as it’s used to build wind turbines and solar panels, as well as electric vehicles. The Conservative government committed to a 68% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030 with the aim of reaching net zero by 2050, meaning copper demand is soaring. But additional analysis by Bloomberg Intelligence shows a growing gap between the amount of copper being produced and demand, with all the shallow, easy-to-extract copper deposits having been mined out. The lack of mining resources mixed with growing demand suggests there will be a 6.5 million tonne gap between supply and …

The Worst Cat Memes You’ve Ever Seen

The Worst Cat Memes You’ve Ever Seen

Why is the MAGA universe joking about Donald Trump saving America’s pets? Illustration by The Atlantic. Source: Getty. September 10, 2024, 6:48 PM ET Over the past 24 hours, the MAGA faithful have been busy sharing cat memes with one another. These are not the adorable “lolcats” that have circulated on the internet for well over a decade, but something darker. They reference a baseless and racist claim from Donald Trump’s running mate, J. D. Vance, that Haitian immigrants in Ohio are eating people’s pets. Trump, the memes show, will protect America’s house cats from this supposed threat. In one such post, he is depicted running away from a mob of Black people while clutching two tabbies; in another, Kamala Harris prepares to cook a cat in a pot. These cat memes, which have been posted or reposted by the likes of Senator Ted Cruz, Elon Musk, and Donald Trump Jr., aren’t quite a joke, and they aren’t quite serious. They’re classic trolling. When Cruz posts an image of two cats hugging overlaid with the …
