Apple executives including CEO Tim Cook unveiled “Apple Intelligence” on Monday during a nearly two-hour-long presentation at the company’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference in Cupertino, California. “All of this goes beyond artificial intelligence, it’s personal intelligence, and it is the next big step for Apple,” CEO Tim Cook said. The upgrades include an overhaul of the virtual assistant Siri, which will be capable of hundreds of more tasks with the help of ChatGPT. Apple users will also be able to create their own emojis based on language prompts and generate summaries of emails in the mailbox via the tech giant’s in-house technology. Apple honors 50 students as it expands coding beyond engineers heading into WWDC 2024

Students attend Apple WWDC 2023 in Cupertino. Apple Apple’s Swift Student Challenge has become an anchor of its annual WWDC event for developers, the press, and partners and the Cupertino tech giant added a new wrinkle to the challenge this year by naming 50 “Distinguished Winners” — from among the 350 overall winners. The 50 honorees will get to come to WWDC 2024 in person and participate in a special three-day experience at Apple Park. And judging by the handful of winners we talked to, the level of creativity and productivity is impressive. The Swift Student Challenge has been happening since 2020 — when I first covered it for CNET — and the most admirable part of it is that it’s not trying to identify the next generation of coding geniuses for Apple to hire. Instead, it’s focused on convincing more people from different backgrounds, different walks of life, different areas of interest, and even different life stages to take an interest in coding and realize they can build apps to solve problems in their …

How an iPhone Powered by Google’s Gemini AI Might Work

How an iPhone Powered by Google’s Gemini AI Might Work

So, assuming the deal does go through, what might Gemini look like on the iPhone? First off, Gartenberg says it will likely manifest with a distinctly un-Apple label. “It would probably be something Apple couldn’t hide under its own brand,” he says. “Perhaps it would be a setting where you could select your assistant, where it could be Siri classic or Siri the sequel. And if I’m Google, I’m going to hold out for some kind of branding on this.” He points out that the default search engine on iOS now is Google Search, and it isn’t rebranded as an Apple service there. Any AI features powered by Gemini would probably warrant the same flashing neon lights, especially at a time when Google is very motivated to show off its AI chops. Apple will also likely keep focus on its own ambitions. Siri, the occasionally helpful and much maligned voice assistant, has long lagged behind other digital assistants. Don’t call it a glow up, but Apple will likely be looking to Gemini-infused AI advancements to …
