Can Mathematics Describe Our Innermost Life When Words Fail?

At Vox, Oshan Jarow, a staff writer who focuses on consciousness, is skeptical about the title question. But, in a recent article, he profiles theorists and researchers who are giving the idea a shot at using math to describe experiences words cannot describe. One of them is mathematician and physicist Johannes Kleiner based at the LMU Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy. In outline, his approach would work like this: For example, words could offer you a poem about the feeling of standing on a sidewalk when a car driving by splashes a puddle from last night’s rain directly into your face. A mathematical structure, on the other hand, could create an interactive 3D model of that experience, showing how all the different sensations — the smell of wet concrete, the maddening sound of the car fleeing the scene of its crime, the viscous drip of dirty water down your face — relate to one another. Oshan Jarow, “Why is it so hard to describe consciousness with words? How math might help us capture our experiences,” …

Amie was the most loving wife and mother. Her giggly laugh and big smile will be hard to be without. A larger than life character. I will miss you immensely my love. To the moon and back, forever and always.” She added: “Thank you for all of the love and support shown and for respecting our privacy. It is a difficult time for everyone.” Gray’s mother, Sharon Macklin, said: “As a family we are devastated to have lost one of the most amazing, funny, kind and energetic souls. Labour vows to ban fire and rehire after war of words with unions | Labour

Labour has vowed it will change the law to ban fire and rehire, after a war of words with unions who accused the party of watering down its pledges on workers’ rights. The plans are revealed in a new leaked dossier, which was sent to trade unions ahead of a crunch meeting with Keir Starmer and contains sweeping plans for an overhaul of workers’ rights including on employment status, protection against unfair dismissal and union representation. But Unite accused the party of “betrayal” and said it was “unrecognisable” from the original proposals, citing a stark change in language on fire and rehire, zero-hours contracts and plans for legislation. A number of trade union sources said there would be “serious discussions” on the document at a meeting planned with Starmer on Tuesday. The leaked document cautions that the overhaul will take time to implement, promising a “full and detailed consultation” on a plan to define a single status of “worker” in law, as well as a review of parental leave rights in the first year and …

Russia’s Head Bishop’s Truly Unnerving Words For Putin On His Inaguration

Russia’s Head Bishop’s Truly Unnerving Words For Putin On His Inaguration

The head of the Russian Orthodox Church had some chilling comments for Vladimir Putin on Tuesday, when blessing the president for his fifth term in office. In a televised service, the Patriarch Kirill of Moscow read a passage from the bible to show the church’s support for the presidency – and then expressed hope that Putin would rule until the end of the century… According to a translation from a former adviser to the Ukrainian government, Anton Gerashchenko, the patriarch reportedly said: “May God bless you so that the end of the century means the end of your time in power. “You have everything you need to serve the country long and successfully.” Putin is 71 and has already been in power for a quarter of a century. Tuesday’s ceremony – which followed Russia’s presidential election – means he will now be in office until his 77th birthday. The patriarch himself has been in his role since 2009 and is a close ally of the president. And, according to a translation in the New York …

Why I’m Removing “Homemaker” From My Job Title

Why I’m Removing “Homemaker” From My Job Title

Every time I fill out any type of paperwork, I always end up writing “homemaker” in the employment blank. I guess it’s because when my husband and I first got married, that was offered as a choice on our car insurance paperwork. And also, at the time, we were involved with a conservative fundamentalist sect of Christianity, which viewed “homemaker” as really my only option.  Homemaking included childrearing, cooking, and all the housework. It was three different jobs (at face level alone)! I don’t have the time to go into that religious trauma. I’m still a Christian. I still stay at home with our children. I still do (most of) the cooking and cleaning, the grocery shopping, and the making of doctor’s appointments. But I’m reframing how I see that. Because what you call yourself matters.  What you believe about your role in your family, your workplace and the world around you matters. Deeply. Your job title can inform how you spend your days, even subconsciously. Calling myself a homemaker, combined with the internalized misogynistic …

Alex Crawford slams ’empty’ press freedom words with no Gaza action

Picture: Press Gazette Sky News special correspondent Alex Crawford has said press freedom speeches given by the Prime Minister and Culture Secretary this week amounted to “empty words” in light of the ongoing Israeli ban on journalists entering Gaza. Crawford, who in February organised an open letter from 55 foreign correspondents pleading for the Israeli government to allow some international journalists into Gaza, said “there is no freedom of information” when reporters cannot get on the ground. Crawford was speaking on Friday as part of a launch event for the 2024 World Press Freedom Index produced by Reporters Without Borders (RSF). Trump Apparently Has Trouble Pronouncing 4-Syllable Words

Trump was criticizing President Joe Biden’s $1.2 trillion infrastructure package, which he signed into law in 2021, when Trump tried to say that four-syllable word. ″[It didn’t] work out too well ― $1.2 trillion for their fake infra-struck-er-sher par-,” Trump said. Trump’s verbal blunder managed to amuse many people on X, formerly Twitter. Source link

Trump slurs words and struggles to gain crowd enthusiasm in Midwest rallies

Trump slurs words and struggles to gain crowd enthusiasm in Midwest rallies

Donald Trump took to Michigan and Wisconsin on his day off from court, Wednesday, to rally his supporters and whine about his legal woes. His incoherent speech, along with inflammatory claims on abortion and pro-Palestinian student demonstration, took the spotlight. Slurring his words at a Waukesha, Wisconsin rally, Trump referred to Biden’s “fake infrastrucker, ershure para,” before settling on “a package of infrastructure.” Minutes later, the 77-year-old launched into a rant about Master Lock, again slipping into incoherence. The speech was just another instance of his public slips, which have led to speculation on his mental fitness. Tuesday night, he seemed to scramble his words to an indecipherable point while speaking to Fox News about pro-Palestinian campus demonstrations. In a moment of cognitive function, Trump managed to spew self-aggrandizing historical inaccuracies about the state of the nation when he left office.  “When I left, [the mortgage rate] was 2.7%. We had no inflation. Everything was so good,” Trump said to a crowd in Freeland, Michigan.  Mortgage rates and inflation were at lower points, but most …

Saying These 3 Little Words Limits Your Self-Love

Saying These 3 Little Words Limits Your Self-Love

We’ve all uttered the phrase, “I feel fat” at some point in our lives, right? Maybe we didn’t think much of it then. After all, it’s a common phrase those around us tend to use. But putting yourself down can lead to harmful behaviors later on. So, why is this phrase so damaging, and how can we learn to connect with our emotions better? Psychologist Dr. Nicole Andreoli explains why saying, “I’m fat” is damaging in our self-love journey. Saying “I Feel Fat” Limits Your Self-Love “The phrase I hear most often is ‘I feel fat’,” says Andreoli, “But this phrase is harmful as it impacts our emotions and what we do next.” We may unconsciously begin to eat less in hopes of getting skinnier. Or we may overeat to become curvier. However, the issue with this phrase extends far beyond the actions we take. Rather, it adds emotion to a word that isn’t supposed to have emotion. “‘Feeling fat’isn’t a thing,” says Andreoli. And you’re pointing the blame in the wrong direction. What you …
