Husband reveals wife’s final words as drink-driver jailed for killing her on wedding day

A bride who was killed by a drink-driver on the day of her wedding told her new husband moments before the crash that she “didn’t want the night to end”. Samantha Miller, 34, died still wearing her wedding dress, while groom Aric Hutchinson suffered a brain injury and numerous broken bones when Jamie Lee Komoroski smashed into the golf cart the couple had been riding in after their beach ceremony. Komoroski, 27, has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for the 2023 crash in South Carolina. Charleston County Courthouse heard how Komoroski had been drinking at several bars and was more than three times the legal limit. She was also said to be driving at 65mph on the 25mph narrow Folly Beach road. Mr Hutchinson cried in court as he recalled the last moments he spent with his wife. He said: “On the golf cart, she told me she didn’t want the night to end and I kissed her on the forehead and then the next thing I remember is waking up in the …

Usain Bolt shares words of wisdom with teen sprinter Gout Gout who broke his record

Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more Stay ahead of the curve with our weekly guide to the latest trends, fashion, relationships and more Usain Bolt has praised teen sprinter Gout Gout after the young athlete broke his record. The 16-year-old sprint prodigy has taken the track world by storm this year, blazing through the 100 and 200 meters and claiming multiple Australian under-16 records. In a jaw-dropping moment at the September U20 World Championships in Peru, Gout ran the 200 meters in 20.60 seconds—edging out Usain Bolt’s 2002 record by a razor-thin 0.01 seconds. In an interview with Jake Humphrey on the High Performance Podcast, Bolt reflected on his early days as a young sprinter before he shook up the athletics world. As he reminisced, he shared some hard-earned wisdom—a piece of advice that speaks volumes to rising star Gout. “When I started out, I didn’t understand …

Words Not Said | Anne Enright

Last year, when I was at home in Ireland and my son was studying in the United States, I found myself sending him a picture from Twitter followed by a warning: “There is a sniper on your university roof, please stay in your room.” I had been keeping a maternal eye on the Gaza protest on campus, bribing him to stay away from it with daily donations to Doctors Without Borders. I realize that, for many Americans, an armed police presence at a campus protest feels normal, so I want to say that nothing about that tiny, global political moment felt ordinary to me. Freedom of speech means people can say anything they like online, but as soon as they bring their bodies along, the guns come out. It was really strange. I also do not think it would have played out differently had a different president been in office at the time. Some of the things about America that feel extreme do not change from one administration to the next. Here in Ireland, the …

the impact of Ofsted on teachers, in their own words

the impact of Ofsted on teachers, in their own words

Ofsted – the schools inspectorate – no longer gives single-word, headline grades to schools in England. It plans to make more changes, accepting many of the recommendations made in a 2024 independent review carried out by former Ofsted head Dame Christine Gilbert. However, though the review rightly mentioned the importance of inspectors’ professional behaviour, it failed to acknowledge in full the bullying and harm that can be experienced from inspections. In 2023, the House of Commons Education Committee launched an inquiry into Ofsted’s work with schools, including on the effect of Ofsted inspections on school staff’s workload and wellbeing. The committee invited written submissions of evidence from the public. As part of a continuing research project, we have analysed all of the well over 200 publicly available written submissions. They came from people who said that they were current or recent teachers, headteachers, governors, academics, teaching representatives, charities and other education organisations. They made deeply difficult reading. Many were anonymised: My evidence has been submitted in a way that I hope makes the school unidentifiable …

Were their prophetic words about the assassination attempt on Donald Trump? – OpentheWord.org

Butler farm show on the day of Trump’s rally, July 13, 2024 Credit: Designism, Wikipedia, Public Domain Most of us have seen pictures of former US President Donald Trump standing up with blood streaming from his ear after being struck in the ear by an assassin’s bullet while campaigning in Butler, Pennsylvania on Saturday, July 13, 2024. The Bible tells us that “Certainly the Lord God does nothingUnless He reveals His secret plan, to His servants the prophets” (Amos 3:7 NASV). I don’t want to rehearse the number of failed prophecies concerning Trump’s re-election in 2020, but there seem to have been a couple of fairly accurate prophecies regarding this assassination attempt. If these prophetic words are legit, it suggests God may be concerned about what is happening in the US politically. Trump Assassination Prophecies The two prophecies included one by JospehZ, a YouTube prophet, who earlier in the morning of the assassination attempt prophesied “…a shout, and like also going to begin to bring the shot heard around the world. I believe that is …

Baby Reindeer in court: the two words that might have saved Netflix $170m worth of grief | Baby Reindeer

At the start of the year, nobody could have predicted that Baby Reindeer – a British drama from a creator nobody had heard of – would end up being the most significant television programme of our age. And yet, it increasingly looks like that will be the case. Ever since a small band of online sleuths watched the show, noted that it was billed as “a true story” and attempted to track down the real-life inspiration of one of its characters, Baby Reindeer has gone supernova. In Fiona Harvey, they found a woman who not only matched the physical description of Martha, the character who stalks the lead, but whose social media output strongly resembled the character’s dialogue on the show. Appearing on Piers Morgan’s YouTube channel, Harvey threatened to sue Netflix for defamation and gross negligence. Yesterday that came to pass. Harvey has filed a $170m (£133m) lawsuit against Netflix in California, accusing the company of defamation, intentional infliction of emotional distress, negligence, gross negligence and violations of her right of publicity. The sum …

Did Jeremiah need his prophetic words to be confirmed? – OpentheWord.org

Did Jeremiah need his prophetic words to be confirmed? – OpentheWord.org

Prophet Jeremiah and the fall of JerusalemCredit: Horace Vernet, 1844, Wikipedia, Public Domain We have an intriguing story involving the prophet Jeremiah that provides some insight into the gift of prophecy and the ministry of the prophet. To set the stage, Babylon was besieging Jerusalem and Jeremiah had already prophesied that the city would fall and that the Jews would be hauled off into captivity. Then we read in Jeremiah 32:6, that the prophet receives a strange word, “The word of the Lord came to me, saying, ‘Behold, Hanamel the son of Shallum your uncle is coming to you, saying, “Buy for yourself my field which is at Anathoth, for you have the right of redemption to buy it.”’ God spoke to Jeremiah, telling him to redeem or purchase the land of his cousin Hanamel. This tells us that Hanamel was probably struggling financially, and since he had no male heirs, the land would need to be redeemed by a close relative. But Jeremiah’s response to what followed is somewhat controversial. When Hanamel shows up …

Can Mathematics Describe Our Innermost Life When Words Fail?

Can Mathematics Describe Our Innermost Life When Words Fail?

At Vox, Oshan Jarow, a staff writer who focuses on consciousness, is skeptical about the title question. But, in a recent article, he profiles theorists and researchers who are giving the idea a shot at using math to describe experiences words cannot describe. One of them is mathematician and physicist Johannes Kleiner based at the LMU Munich Center for Mathematical Philosophy. In outline, his approach would work like this: For example, words could offer you a poem about the feeling of standing on a sidewalk when a car driving by splashes a puddle from last night’s rain directly into your face. A mathematical structure, on the other hand, could create an interactive 3D model of that experience, showing how all the different sensations — the smell of wet concrete, the maddening sound of the car fleeing the scene of its crime, the viscous drip of dirty water down your face — relate to one another. Oshan Jarow, “Why is it so hard to describe consciousness with words? How math might help us capture our experiences,” …
