Jill Connelly/AP Photo hide caption toggle caption i Jill Connelly/AP Photo The National Weather Service said on Sunday that Rachel has been downgraded to a post-tropical storm after causing flooding and damage in southern California over the weekend before moving inland across the desert southwest. The region is still at risk of flash floods as the storm’s remnants were expected to continue dumping rain and bringing wind gusts through the weekend, the weather service said, adding that high surf would continue battering coastal communities. Oceanfront homes in coastal California cities, such as Long Beach and Newport Beach, were partially submerged as heavy surf breached sand berms that had been erected to keep the water away. Flood warnings remained in effect for much of the California coastline through the weekend, from San Diego up to the San Francisco Bay area. As the storm moved inland and northeast, some areas saw rockslides …

Wavy-shaped homes could limit damage from hurricane winds

Wavy-shaped homes could limit damage from hurricane winds

As residents on the northern Gulf Coast brace for quickly strengthening Hurricane Isaias (a Category 3 storm as of Friday afternoon), many are likely eyeing their roofs and walls with nervous anticipation. The Congressional Budget Office estimates hurricane force winds and storm-related flooding collectively cost households in the United States some $34 billion every year. And while rounded corners, sloped walls and reinforced construction can help mitigate some wind damage, these additions are often expensive or impractical for developers looking to cut costs. Engineers at Florida A&M University and Florida State University think they’ve found a resourceful alternative, and it involves embracing the ocean’s own wavy aesthetic.   For  a study recently published  in the journal Engineering Structures, the team built 3D-printed models of several low-rise buildings with wave shaped walls and roofs and tested them in a wind tunnel. The designs with the deepest waves, (in this case 10 percent of the building’s overall height) cut peak wind pressure near roof and wall corner by up to 60 percent. Those corners and edges are where damaging …

Bukaty/AP Talia Manno opened her door on Saturday morning to waves lapping halfway up the front steps to her Atlantic City, N.J., home. “It got up to my fifth step,” Manno said. “I was really freaking out.” Manno, a lifelong resident, said the last time water came that high was during Hurricane Sandy. “Even if you live here and you see high tide and flooding, that was really scary and it happened so fast,” she said. Manno is among tens of millions of people from the mid-Atlantic through the coast of Maine who are in the path of a powerful and rare September nor’easter that is bringing coastal flooding, heavy rain and high winds this weekend. Nearly 80,000 people were without power across New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut and Massachusetts, as of Saturday evening, according to the PowerOutage.com map. The storm …

Firefighters in Greece struggle to save coastal resort as winds rage

PORTO GERMENO: Hundreds of firefighters in Greece on Saturday (Aug 1) were battling to save a popular coastal resort northwest of Athens as violent winds lashed the country, hampering operations. More than 400 firefighters, backed by several dozen specialised aircraft, were battling blazes in the area of Porto Germeno, some 70km northwest of Athens, the fire department said. “Some aircraft have managed to operate despite the wind, and we are seeing spectacular results,” the deputy governor of the affected Voiotia region, Giorgos Dasiotis, told state TV ERT. “Things are much better … however the wind gusts change conditions instantaneously, it’s unprecedented,” he said. “BURNED COMPLETELY” Dimos Economou, who lives in nearby Vilia and came to help said many homes had burned. “Many homes have burned. As far as I know, there have been no fatalities, but many houses have been destroyed,” he told AFP in Porto Germeno as the odour of smoke hung heavily in the air. According to meteo.gr, the weather service of the National Observatory of Athens, winds up to 130 kilometres per …

Powerful black hole pushes quasar’s winds across 300,000 light-years

Powerful black hole pushes quasar’s winds across 300,000 light-years

A quasar 3.4 billion light-years away is stirring hot gas across roughly 300,000 light-years, far beyond the galaxy that contains it. XRISM detected unusually fast gas motions carrying about 100 times more energy than earlier estimates for similar black-hole winds. The observations may help astronomers improve models of how black holes influence galaxy clusters, though turbulence, gas flows and sloshing remain difficult to separate. A quasar 3.4 billion light-years away is stirring hot gas far beyond its home galaxy, sending energy through a region 300,000 light-years wide. The disturbance is forcing astronomers to rethink how far black-hole winds can reach. The source is H1821+643, a bright quasar in the constellation Draco. At its center sits a supermassive black hole about 2.6 billion times the mass of the sun. It shines far more powerfully than most nearby quasars despite weak radio jets. “Black holes are largely known for sucking matter in, but they also eject gas in the form of powerful winds,” said Satoshi Yamada, an assistant professor at Tohoku University’s Frontier Institute for Interdisciplinary Sciences. …

Astronomers discover why solar winds gradually slow down on their way out of the solar system

Astronomers discover why solar winds gradually slow down on their way out of the solar system

Space looks empty until you try to cross it. Far beyond Pluto, where sunlight is faint and the planets are long behind, NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft is moving through a region where the Sun’s outflow begins to lose its grip. There, a stream of charged particles called the solar wind is gradually slowing down. The new measurements help show why. The answer lies in a quiet, persistent encounter with material drifting in from interstellar space. A team led by Southwest Research Institute scientist Dr. Heather Elliott found that the solar wind measured by New Horizons at 58 astronomical units from the Sun was 13% to 15% slower than the solar wind measured near Earth, at 1 astronomical unit. That extends an earlier pattern. Previous measurements between 30 and 43 astronomical units had suggested a slowdown of about 5% to 10%. The change is not dramatic in the way a shock wave would be. But over those enormous distances, it matters. “As the solar wind travels away from the Sun at supersonic speeds, roughly 1 million …

6 completed fantasy series to read instead of waiting for The Winds of Winter

Fantasy author George R.R. Martin published A Game of Thrones, the first book in his A Song of Ice and Fire novels, in 1996. He published four more books in the series over the next 15 years, ending with A Dance With Dragons in 2011. Since then, fans have been waiting for him to complete The Winds of Winter, the sixth book in the saga, without luck. In fact, Martin has now been working on The Winds of Winter for longer than it took him to write the first five books in the series. That is a sobering statistic, and it’s hard not to look at it and wonder if The Winds of Winter will ever be finished. Happily, there are plenty of already-finished fantasy series out there that are just as good. The Earthsea Cycle Ursula K. Le Guin’s war on war Credit: Clarion Books Ursula K. UK weather: Met Office issues yellow warning as south coast set to be lashed by strong winds

UK weather: Met Office issues yellow warning as south coast set to be lashed by strong winds

People are facing travel disruption and power cuts across the south of England as “unseasonably strong winds” are lashing the coast. Gusts of up to 55mph are expected to move eastwards from Cornwall through to Sussex on Saturday, with wet and windy conditions expected to last until the evening. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for wind covering the south west and parts of the south east as it cautioned the windy weather could bring power outages and travel disruption. Organisers at the Royal Cornwall Show said they had been forced to cancel the event’s final day due to the winds. They added the decision had been taken with “great regret”, following a “thorough assessment of forecast weather conditions”. A yellow weather warning for wind is in place (Met Office) The Met Office said the weather warning is in place from 9am to 7pm on Saturday. Strong winds have already arrived across western Cornwall during Saturday morning and move eastwards across Cornwall, English Channel coastal districts, and the Isle of Wight, before …

Powerful Winds and Reported Tornadoes Rip Through the Midwest, Leaving Heavy Damage but No Deaths

Powerful Winds and Reported Tornadoes Rip Through the Midwest, Leaving Heavy Damage but No Deaths

A trail of damaged homes and buildings dotted a wide swath of the U.S. on Saturday after a burst of destructive winds and reported tornadoes tore off roofs, uprooted trees and rendered rural roads impassable with debris. No deaths were reported following Friday’s storms, which barreled through the Upper Midwest and delivered the latest round of severe weather to batter the region. Officials braced residents for a long recovery in some rural communities. “We are extremely fortunate that this storm did not result in loss of life or serious injury,” Stephenson County Sheriff Steve Stovall said of the storm that hit Lena, Illinois. Officials in Wisconsin and Minnesota echoed those sentiments. In central Wisconsin, a reported tornado that tore through the cities of Kronenwetter and Ringle left behind damaged homes and some residents briefly trapped in their basements, Ringle Fire Chief Chris Kielman told reporters. Marathon County Sheriff Chad Billeb said he had not seen this much devastation during his 34 years in law enforcement. “A lot of people are going to need a lot …
