Wash and grow: how the right payment platform helped a laundry service to innovate | Elavon. Your World of Payments

Katy Mitchell didn’t ever imagine she’d buy a laundry company. So, in June 2019, when she took control of the keys and cash boxes for 270 student laundry facilities around the UK, she could be forgiven for wondering what she’d just done. Fast forward five years and she’s doubled the turnover of the business, built a team of 25, and been named Managing Director of the Year for Laundry Solutions by SME News. “It was a complete surprise,” she says of the award. “And absolutely brilliant to have some recognition – as a small business manager you’re so far away from being on a Forbes list or on the front page of MoneyWeek. We’re just really proud of what we do.” Washstation owner Katy Mitchell Mitchell didn’t take the most direct path. As an accountant turned consultant, she had spent most of her career working for global giants such as Virgin Mobile, Vodafone, RBS, Lenovo and BP. But she found herself dissatisfied at being at arm’s length from the nitty gritty of running an actual …

The Only Thing You Should Be Using To Wash Your Body

The Only Thing You Should Be Using To Wash Your Body

For many of us, showering is not just part of our personal hygiene routine — it might be the only few minutes of peace, tranquility and reflection we get to ourselves in the day. And while the particulars of our showers might vary in terms of nature, duration and temperature, one thing remains constant: the quest to get squeaky clean. Our shower habits are usually based on how we were raised and our cultural backgrounds. That means some of us are all about the loofahs, others are team washcloth, and some rely on a sponge. But is all that exfoliating actually good for our skin? As we age, after all, so does the largest organ of our body: our glorious, sexy skinbag. Keeping our skin as healthy and supple as possible is paramount. So we — Raj Punjabi and Noah Michelson, hosts of HuffPost’s “Am I Doing It Wrong?” podcast — wanted to find out the optimal approach (from a clinical perspective) when we’re soaping up in the shower. Press play to listen to the …

David Blunkett’s mea culpa on indefinite sentences won’t wash | UK criminal justice

David Blunkett’s mea culpa on indefinite sentences won’t wash | UK criminal justice

Simon Hattenstone writes about David Blunkett’s latest mea culpa regarding imprisonment for public protection sentences (Martin Myers tried and failed to steal a cigarette. Why has he spent 18 years in prison for it?, 1 May). Blunkett’s statements of regret should not be allowed to pass. He admits that the resources were not in place to provide “offending behaviour” courses for those on indeterminate sentences. But as home secretary, he would have known this full well in 2003. IPP sentences were just one aspect of an enthusiastic authoritarianism practised by Blair and co. Between 1995 and 2009, the prison population rose by 66%. In its 2001 general election manifesto, Labour stated: “We plan the most comprehensive reform of the criminal justice system since the war – to catch, convict, punish and rehabilitate more of the 100,000 persistent offenders.” From 1997 to 2007, the total spending on criminal justice in the UK added up to around £187bn. Blunkett wants to paint the introduction of IPPs without proper resourcing as an innocent blunder. In reality, New Labour …

Can a sound bath wash away your worries? Are there health benefits to listening to gongs?

Can a sound bath wash away your worries? Are there health benefits to listening to gongs?

SHOULD YOU TRY A SOUND BATH? Some practitioners make broad health promises about sound baths, claiming they can aid depression, lower blood pressure and, more fancifully, even repair DNA. These benefits can’t be proven without scientific trials, said Dr David Silbersweig, a professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. And it’s difficult to know whether the effects people do report come from the sounds themselves or the relaxing environment in which they’re played, he added. Some instructors are careful not to oversell their work. Bechtold, a sound bath teacher and gong player of 20 years, said she saw sound baths as a part of an overall wellness routine. They can give participants time and space to process emotions, Bechtold said, “and at the same time learn to more deeply relax the body.” Perhaps that’s one key to their appeal. Alejandra Davila, 29, who attended the beach sound bath in Santa Monica, said she was drawn in by posts on Instagram. “I kept wanting to try yoga,” Davila said, “and this just kind of seemed more …

How Should Women Wash Their Vaginal Area?

How Should Women Wash Their Vaginal Area?

When it comes to body parts, there’s no shortage of products designed to keep the vaginal area feel fresh and clean. There are “feminine wipes” that claim to be more refreshing than toilet paper and skin care that costs more because it is packaged in feminine colours and has floral scents. But misunderstandings about how to best clean “down there” can be harmful and can lead to wasting money on unnecessary products. We asked health experts for the best way to keep vaginas and vulvas clean simply, without spending a fortune. Do we need to wash INSIDE the vagina? There’s no need to routinely wash inside vaginas because they are “self-cleaning ovens,” according to Dr. Karyn Eilber, a urogynaecologist and co-author of ”A Woman’s Guide to Her Pelvic Floor: What the F*@# Is Going On Down There?” Lactobacilli, a type of natural bacteria that inhabits the vagina, produces lactic acid to keep the vaginal pH in the normal acidic range. This helps keep vaginas clean, explained Dr. Alyssa Dweck, a gynaecologist and chief medical officer …

Cybertruck Turns Into Large Metal Brick After Going Through Car Wash

Cybertruck Turns Into Large Metal Brick After Going Through Car Wash

For a vehicle ostensibly designed to go anywhere, Tesla’s Cybertruck seems to have a lot of trouble in mundane settings. As one recent owner found out, even a car wash was able to defeat the 6,600-pound pickup. As spotted by Jalopnik, a routine visit through a car wash to get sand off the truck after a beach visit seemingly caused the entire vehicle to shut down. The center console went blank, turning the stainless steel monstrosity into a giant brick. “I’m about two and half months in and 3,400 miles,” TikTok user captain.ad said in a recent video, “and it’s not working right now.” After holding down two buttons on the steering wheel to reset the screen, the dashboard made a strange noise. “That was a weird popping sound,” the owner said, perplexed. $TSLA Cybertruck owners .. 1) do NOT wash your car in sunlight and 2) do NOT tell Tesla SCs that you drove it through a car wash (like this guy) even if you turned on Car Wash Mode. They will void your …

I Watched This Island Wash Away in a Decade

I Watched This Island Wash Away in a Decade

This article was originally published by Hakai Magazine. Before the sea started taking house-size bites out of Nyangai, this small tropical island off the coast of Sierra Leone hummed with activity. I first visited in 2013 while documenting the construction of a school on a neighboring island. It was a cloudless day in April. A group of teenagers was busy setting up a sound system for a party. Old men chatted and smoked in the shade of palm trees. Children chased one another through the maze of sandy lanes while a constant traffic of roughly hewn wooden boats plied the surrounding waters. The silhouettes of coconut palms and June plum trees dominated the island’s profile, and beneath them stood clusters of neat mud-and-thatch homes. The beach that ringed the island was so white, it hurt the eyes, the water a limpid green. I couldn’t stay for long, but Nyangai left a deep impression. In December of the following year, I caught another glimpse of the island, this time while flying over it in a United …

What Happens If You Don’t Wash Your Face Every Morning?

What Happens If You Don’t Wash Your Face Every Morning?

Ask any dermatologist what they recommend for the first step of a skin care routine, and they’ll likely give the same answer: cleansing. But is that true for both morning and nighttime routines? “My opinion is that washing your face in the evening is a nonnegotiable,” said Dr. Angela Casey, an Ohio-based, board-certified dermatologist. “Overnight, our skin undergoes the ‘rest and repair’ phase of the skin cell cycle.” According to Casey, when people don’t thoroughly remove dirt, allergens and other irritants from the face at night, they can interfere with the skin’s repair cycle. Though many beauty aficionados have a nightly skin care routine with multiple steps, such as double cleansing, their dedication to a morning skin care routine may be another story. A lot of them are lucky to have enough time in the morning to splash water on their face before running out the door. Although dermatologists agree that most (if not all) of their patients need to wash their faces at night, what do they think about people who skip the morning …

The alliance will strive to bring holistic care to children and families experiencing poverty through safe water access. The newly piloted program will reach Chimwenje’s more than 6,000 residents upon completion in 2024. The project will mainstream Water Mission’s well-established safe water processes and standards in Compassion’s program in Malawi and help to refine and align operational standards and processes for joint church and community engagement. “Water Mission’s technical excellence, church engagement strategies, and presence in vulnerable communities makes them a wonderful, strategically aligned partner for Compassion,” said Herb Ehresman, Director of Strategic Alliances at Compassion International. “We can reach exponentially more children and families through this partnership than we could on our own.
