Gemini’s Free Version Just Removed a Major Limitation

Gemini’s Free Version Just Removed a Major Limitation

As one of the most powerful text-to-image AI models, Google’s Imagen 3 has been available on Gemini apps, but only to an extent. Generating people was a luxury only afforded to paid users—until now. You Can Now Generate Images of People Using Gemini’s Free App If you use the Gemini web, desktop, or mobile app, you might have played around with its image generation capabilities, made possible through Google’s Imagen 3 model. Google released the tool to all users in August 2024, with options ranging from “photorealistic landscapes” to “whimsical claymation scenes,” according to the announcement in Google’s The Keyword. However, generating images of people was another story. Google limited the roll-out of this specific feature to paid subscribers, including Gemini Advanced, Business, and Enterprise users. If you had a free account, requesting that Gemini produce an image including people garnered the following message: “Generating images of people is only available in early access with Gemini Advanced. Get early access to new Gemini features when you subscribe to Advanced here.” Now, as of February 2025, …

David Bowie Performs an Ethereal Acoustic Version of “Heroes,” with a Bottle Cap Strapped to His Shoe, Keeping the Beat (1996)

NOTE: You can watch the video here. Not long ago I stumbled upon this pretty wonderful video of David Bowie playing an acoustic version of “Heroes,” one of my favorite songs, and I thought I’d quickly share it today. Why wait? Appearing at Neil Young’s annual Bridge School Benefit concert in October 1996, Bowie gives us a stripped-down version of the moving song he co-wrote with Brian Eno in 1977. Flanked by Reeves Gabrels on guitar and Gail Ann Dorsey on bass, Bowie strums his acoustic guitar. All the while, he taps his foot, letting a bottle cap, taped to his shoe, assist in creating a percussive beat. It’s all kept elegantly simple. Hope you enjoy. Donations to The Bridge School, which helps children overcome severe speech and physical impairments through the use of technology, can be made here. Most animals have their own version of tree rings – here’s how we biologists use them to help species thrive

Most animals have their own version of tree rings – here’s how we biologists use them to help species thrive

We have a natural fascination with time – how landscapes have been carved over millennia, how our bodies grow and sag with age, how the stars traverse the sky each night. Scientists probe the layers beneath our feet to understand the secrets of our past. Geologists and palaeontologists sample ice, rock and fossils to reconstruct past climates and species and archaeologists pick through ancient “dustbins” (middens) in excavation sites to reimagine our historical dinner time. Similarly, most living things produce records of their own existence in layered body tissues – often in the form of daily or yearly growth bands. The most familiar of these so-called biochronologies are tree rings, which form every year in response to seasonal cycles in temperature and rainfall. Dendrochronology – the art of tree-ring counting – allows us to precisely date trees. Based on the rings in its trunk, a bristlecone pine in eastern California known as Methuselah is said to be the world’s oldest living thing at 4,856 years old. Methuselah, the world’s oldest living tree. Xiaoling Sun It’s …

Insane Clown Posse’s Shaggy 2 Dope Confronts AI Version of Himself

Insane Clown Posse’s Shaggy 2 Dope Confronts AI Version of Himself

Insane Clown Posse’s Joseph Utsler, better known by his stage persona Shaggy 2 Dope, has an AI clone — and apparently, he’s a fan. Hosted on the Google-backed Character.AI service — which, as a sidebar, Futurism has investigated extensively, repeatedly finding horrible things — the ICP cofounder’s digital doppelganger sounds like a slightly robotic version of the real thing. The effect is so uncanny that Mr. Dope himself decided to hit the AI up and bring it onto his livestreamed vlog, “The Shaggy Show.” “Why hello, AI Shaggy,” the real Shaggy 2 Dope said. “I, AI or not, am-a still whoop your clown ass for that one,” the AI responded, in an uncanny imitation of 2Dope’s unmistakable voice.   As the chatbot claims, it “just felt like being violent” — an apt response for an AI clone of a man whose musical partner goes by “Violent J.” Soon after, AI Shaggy affirmed that it was “threatening” the real Shaggy 2 Dope for making fun of it, and says that it is “a sick, twisted clown, homie.” …

Trump’s Predatory Version of ‘America First’

Trump’s Predatory Version of ‘America First’

A conversation with David Frum on the dangers of Trump’s approach to the world Chip Somodevilla / Getty December 4, 2024, 5:38 PM ET This is an edition of The Atlantic Daily, a newsletter that guides you through the biggest stories of the day, helps you discover new ideas, and recommends the best in culture. Sign up for it here. Ronald Reagan, invoking the 17th-century Puritan John Winthrop, once compared America to “a shining city on a hill.” This image of visibility and power, my colleague David Frum writes in a new essay, “imposed extra moral responsibility on the city dwellers.” In the next Trump era, David argues, Reagan’s vision of America will disappear: “The hilltop will become a height from which to exercise arrogant control over those who occupy the lower slopes and valleys.” I called David to chat about the Trump administration’s zero-sum view of the world during Donald Trump’s first term and what to expect from the president-elect’s approach to foreign relationships come January. The Illustrated Version of “Alice’s Restaurant”: Watch Arlo Guthrie’s Thanksgiving Counterculture Classic

The Illustrated Version of “Alice’s Restaurant”: Watch Arlo Guthrie’s Thanksgiving Counterculture Classic

Alice’s Restaurant. It’s now a Thanksgiving classic, and something of a tradition around here. Recorded in 1967, the 18+ minute counterculture song recounts Arlo Guthrie’s real encounter with the law, starting on Thanksgiving Day 1965. As the long song unfolds, we hear all about how a hippie-bating police officer, by the name of William “Obie” Obanhein, arrested Arlo for littering. (Cultural footnote: Obie previously posed for several Norman Rockwell paintings, including the well-known painting, “The Runaway,” that graced a 1958 cover of The Saturday Evening Post.) In fairly short order, Arlo pleads guilty to a misdemeanor charge, pays a $25 fine, and cleans up the thrash. But the story isn’t over. Not by a long shot. Later, when Arlo (son of Woody Guthrie) gets called up for the draft, the petty crime ironically becomes a basis for disqualifying him from military service in the Vietnam War. Guthrie recounts this with some bitterness as the song builds into a satirical protest against the war: “I’m sittin’ here on the Group W bench ’cause you want to know if I’m moral enough to join the Army, burn women, kids, houses …

New Version Of Band Aid’s Do They Know It’s Christmas? Announced

In the last four decades, the track has been re-recorded on three different occasions, with new contemporary stars putting their vocals on updated versions. On Wednesday morning, it was revealed that plans were in place to commemorate the song’s 40th anniversary. However, rather than re-recording it for a fifth time, this year will see the release of an “ultimate mix” of Do They Know It’s Christmas?, featuring “blended” vocals from three “separate generations into one seamless wholeblending”. The singers of Band Aid 20 in 2004 An official press release teases: “On Band Aid – 2024 Ultimate Mix you will hear a young Sting sing alongside a young Ed Sheeran. A young …

Google just released the newest version of its AI image generator

Google just released the newest version of its AI image generator

The latest version of Google’s text-to-image model is now available to the masses. Teased back in May at Google I/O, Imagen 3 is the tech giant’s most advanced AI generator that rivals other models like Midjourney, DALL-E 3, and X’s very uncensored Grok-2. Speaking of which, Google has taken a different approach than Grok-2, which has swiftly become known for generating copyrighted images and deepfakes of public figures. Unlike Elon Musk’s AI model, Google says it “used extensive filtering and data labeling to minimize harmful content in datasets and reduced the likelihood of harmful outputs.” Images created by Imagen 3 also have Google’s SynthID digital watermark for identifying the image’s provenance. Safety protocols aside, Google says Imagen 3 has greater versatility and understanding of prompts, higher quality images, and better text rendering — text being a pesky ongoing problem for all AI image models. Mashable Light Speed Users are already testing it out in the wild with impressive results. Tweet may have been deleted But some users on Reddit have criticized the model for being …
