The bitter fight over a Texas Senate seat that Democrats believe is within reach for the first time in decades should be ramping up right now. But in the final push, when campaigns believe most voters are finally tuning in, Democratic state Rep. James Talarico has been off the trail for in-person events in the state for 12 days. His campaign says he has the flu and is expected to be back in action this weekend. While he has appeared virtually at a forum, Talarico’s last in-person event in the state was on Sept. 26. He visited New York on Sept. 29 for a private fundraiser, and, according to the virtual remarks he gave to the Hispanic Business Council the next day, he returned to Dallas and visited urgent care. This summer, Southern California hiker Mark Orr spotted a hazard he struggled to stop thinking about: a crumbling, narrowing section of the Devil’s Backbone Trail near Mt. Baldy. Orr wanted to help. In early August, he trekked about 5.6 miles from the trailhead near Manker Flat campground to the site, hauling 85 pounds of gear with him over two trips. Orr first spent two hours digging out a wider route and then built what he dubbed an “anti-erosion fence” by installing 30-inch rebar stakes, stainless steel wire, clamps, aluminum flashing and zip ties. A few weeks later, Orr posted a video documenting his work to his YouTube channel, where he’d previously shared about hiking and other DIY projects. Here’s the equation that arrived in my mind: Love of books + love of walking = Library Trail. Could I walk to all the libraries in L.A.? I asked myself this question and then one second later I asked Google, because my phone was in my hand as it is 50% of the time, and 75% of the time when I’m not being social. I spend a lot of time alone, writing books that I hope will end up in libraries. I knew there were many public libraries in L.A., and that walking to all of them would probably result in a trail that looked like a snarled nest. This turned out to be correct. Astronomers found a strong H-alpha glow from cool ionized gas only along the directions of radio jets launched by supermassive black holes, revealing a highly directional effect extending deep into galactic halos. The signal appeared in stacked observations of 324 radio galaxy and background-quasar pairs, with H-alpha more than five standard deviations above the noise along jet-aligned sight lines but undetected when all directions were averaged together. Magnesium absorption showed no comparable directional pattern, suggesting the jets do not create most of the cool gas but instead compress, heat or ionize clouds already distributed through the circumgalactic medium. A supermassive black hole can occupy a region tiny compared with its host galaxy, yet jets launched near that black hole may alter gas hundreds of thousands of light-years away. Astronomers have now found evidence that those narrow plasma jets leave a directional imprint on the circumgalactic medium, or CGM, the enormous reservoir of gas surrounding galaxies. From now till Sep 27, Science Centre Singapore is hosting Celestial Nights, where attendees can take part in various free experiences and ticketed programmes. One of these free events is the illuminated night trail, a self-guided route that connects the Centre with Japanese Garden. Visitors can start the trail at Metamorphosis or the Water Lily Pavilion in Japanese Garden and follow illuminated displays depicting celestial bodies across the solar system. The experience also includes free stargazing​ at the Water Lily Pavilion. Tickets for the night trail can be redeemed for free via Science Centre Singapore’s website. At 69, I had never hiked with a backpack and I had no idea what land art was. Nonetheless, when my friend Jackie, a nature documentary film-maker, invited me to join her and her friends Wendy and Sasha on a hiking trip to Refuges d’Art in the mountainous countryside of Haute-Provence, I said a resounding “yes”. We would be sleeping alongside sculptures by the renowned land artist Andy Goldsworthy. First, I watch Rivers and Tides, a documentary on Goldsworthy’s work, and discover he has built exquisite ice sculptures and stone cairns in my own country, Canada. His work seems to speak to an older part of the soul. Then, I start walking up hills, gradually adding weights to my backpack until I can comfortably carry 9kg (20lb). Parts of the island were inundated with nearly 10 inches of rain, according to preliminary totals from the NWS. Lowell has since weakened to a tropical storm and continues to move away from Hawaii, but residual tropical moisture could bring additional precipitation and storms Wednesday over the island chain, which could slow cleanup efforts in some hard-hit areas. This was far from the first storm to leave a trail of damage in Hawaii over the last six months. Parts of Oahu and the Big Island saw intense flooding from Hurricane Lala just weeks ago, with some additional rain from Tropical Storm Moke on the Big Island soon after.
