Why you should get to know Thomas Aquinas, even 800 years after he lived

Why you should get to know Thomas Aquinas, even 800 years after he lived

(The Conversation) — Some years ago, I was rushing past the treasures of the Louvre in Paris, on the way to the “Mona Lisa,” when a painting stopped me in my tracks. Massive and unusually elongated, “The Triumph of St. Thomas Aquinas” depicts the 13th-century saint throned in a golden sun, with Aristotle and Plato standing reverently on either side. The Renaissance artist Benozzo Gozzoli paints Christ and the writers of the Gospels looking down at Aquinas approvingly. But who is the turbaned figure under Aquinas’ feet, crushed by his frankly famous weight and crawling away in defeat? That would be the 12th-century Muslim philosopher Ibn Rushd, or Averroes, as he became known in Latin Europe. “Oh no,” I said out loud. Us vs. them As a Catholic philosopher and avid student of Aquinas, I am always fielding questions about whether this medieval saint is “still worth” reading today, nearly 800 years after his birth. Aquinas is a giant of Western philosophy and theology, and for good reason. His writing is clear, well organized, free …

The Return of Trump—V | Astra Taylor, Michael Greenberg, Coco Fusco, Verlyn Klinkenborg, Thomas Powers, Anne Enright

Astra Taylor • Michael Greenberg • Coco Fusco • Verlyn Klinkenborg • Thomas Powers • Anne Enright Astra Taylor On election night, before Harris’s loss set in, some exit polls showed that “democracy” was a top concern for voters. Many liberals took the result as an auspicious sign. But what is democracy? That was the title of a documentary I made during the 2016 presidential campaign. As I conducted dozens of interviews across the United States over many months, I learned that there was hardly a consensus over the word’s meaning. Ordinary people struggled to define it; a recent college graduate asked me if democracy was when “they tell you what to do.” Others, usually men, scoffed that we actually live in a republic, not a democracy, as though that settled the matter. Still others—many of them—found the American political system exasperatingly corrupt: rigged by special interests, permeated by racism, and almost or already irredeemable. I also spoke to young conservatives and attended Donald Trump’s rallies, where he railed against the War on Terror, Wall …

Thomas Edison’s Recordings of Leo Tolstoy: Hear the Voice of the Great Russian Novelist

Thomas Edison’s Recordings of Leo Tolstoy: Hear the Voice of the Great Russian Novelist

Born 196 years ago, Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy’s life (1828–1910) spanned a period of immense social, political, and technological change, paralleled in his own life by his radical shift from hedonistic nobleman to theologian, anarchist, and vegetarian pacifist. Though he did not live to see the Russian Revolution, the novelist did see Tsar Alexander II’s sweeping reforms, including the 1861 Emancipation order that changed the social character of the country. Near the end of his life, Tolstoy saw the coming of new recording technology that would revolutionize the direction of his own life’s work—telling stories. In his later years Tolstoy appeared in the new medium of film, which captured his 80th birthday in 1908, and his funeral procession two years later. He was the subject of the first color photograph taken in Russia (top) also in 1908. And that same year, Tolstoy made several audio recordings of his voice, on a phonograph sent to him personally by Thomas Edison. You can hear one of those recordings, “The Power of Childhood,” made on April 19th, 1908, …

The big picture: Central Park Zoo’s star turn by Thomas Hoepker | Photography

Thomas Hoepker, the Magnum photographer who died earlier this month aged 88, took this picture at Central Park Zoo in 1992. Polar bears had been introduced to the zoo in 1988, first Gus, and then his two female companions, Ida and Lily. Gus, in particular, became the zoo’s star turn, seen by 20 million people before his death in 2013. He achieved particular fame a couple of years after this picture was taken when he started compulsively swimming in a figure of eight pattern for hours at a time. The mystery drew reporters from around the world, and prompted editorials about the frustrations of captivity. Gus was depicted as a typical New Yorker, fretful, neurotic, depressive, a symbol of the city. There was a book, What’s Worrying Gus?, and a play devoted to him. Lily and Ida, with whom he was frequently pictured cuddling, appeared to offer only fitful comfort. The zoo eventually hired a behavioural therapist at a cost of $25,000 (£19,000) to observe Gus. He was prescribed toys and treats, and offered a …

Thomas eyes Paris but says not interested in just another tracksuit

Britain’s Geraint Thomas said he hopes to compete at the Paris Olympics this summer but only if he feels capable of winning another medal. Thomas, who won the Tour de France in 2018, competed in the road race at the Tokyo and Rio Games but was involved in crashes at both events. However, the 37-year-old has had more success on the track, winning team pursuit gold at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics. “I’d love to do one more Olympics, but I don’t want to go and just get another tracksuit,” Thomas told the Guardian in an interview published on Sunday. “I want to be good enough to be in with a shout of a medal. I’ve got four tracksuits already – I don’t need another one.” Thomas also weighed in on rider safety, which has become a talking point in the sport after a crash involving two-times Tour de France champion Jonas Vingegaard, Primoz Roglic and Remco Evenepoel among others brought fresh scrutiny on cycling’s governing bodies. “Everyone’s talking about this now because big-name riders …

Welshman Thomas to lead Ineos challenge at Giro d’Italia

Last year’s Giro d’Italia runner-up Geraint Thomas will lead the Ineos Grenadiers team at the race which starts next month, the British outfit said on Thursday. Former Tour de France winner Thomas, 37, heads an experienced squad that he said will adopt an aggressive approach to the year’s first Grand Tour. “The core is the same as last year’s Giro team, with some great additions for this year,” the Welshman said. “We have spent a lot of time together at training camp; we know what we need to do and are all feeling super motivated to get the job done and deliver.” Thomas, who finished only 14 seconds behind winner Primoz Roglic last year, will be supported in the GC battle by Dutchman Thymen Arensman, who was sixth overall last year and will again play a key role in the mountain stages. Fellow Briton Ben Swift will serve as road captain while Italy’s Filippo Ganna will be favourite to win the two individual time trials in the 21-stage race. American Magnus Sheffield, 22, will make …

The Elephant and the Blind review: Thomas Metzinger hunts for ‘pure consciousness’

The Elephant and the Blind review: Thomas Metzinger hunts for ‘pure consciousness’

The Elephant and the BlindThomas Metzinger (MIT Press) Books about consciousness don’t come any more radical (or with a longer title) than The Elephant and the Blind: The experience of pure consciousness – philosophy, science, and 500+ experiential reports. As you might guess, its author, Thomas Metzinger, has carried out a monumental study of the state of “pure”, or “minimal”, consciousness, experienced during meditation and of which we may all have had glimpses. In his book, Metzinger sends a powerful triple message: we should rethink how to study consciousness scientifically; celebrate the wonder of these experiences of pure consciousness… Source link

Lady Gabriella Kingston Reportedly Moved to Kensington Palace After the Death of Thomas Kingston

On February 25, Lady Gabriella Kingston, a second cousin of King Charles III, lost her husband, Thomas Kingston, at the age of 45 to what a coroner called a “catastrophic head wound.” According to the Daily Mail, she has moved back to the Kensington Palace apartment shared by her parents, Prince and Princess Michael of Kent. “They wanted Ella to be with them, and she didn’t want to be alone in the home she shared with Tom,” one friend told the Mail’s Richard Eden. “All of us are rallying round and she’s going to be OK.” Kingston’s death happened amid a series of stressful events for the royal family, which included cancer diagnoses for the king, Kate Middleton, and Sarah Ferguson. Gabriella, who turned 43 on Tuesday, married Thomas in a 2019 Windsor Castle ceremony. Thomas, who previously served as a hostage negotiator in Iraq, worked as a director at Devonport Capital at the time of his death. His funeral was held at Chapel Royal in St James Palace, and Prince William was among a …
