Seven men used two teenage girls as ‘sex slaves’ in Rochdale | UK News

Seven men have been found guilty of using two teenage girls as “sex slaves” in Rochdale. Their trial at Minshull Street Crown Court in Manchester heard evidence in relation to 53 sexual offences, believed to have been committed between 2001 and 2006, over 72 days. One of the victims, who is now in her 30s, told the jury she was labelled a “prostitute” by social services in Rochdale when allegations against the men first came to light. Their trial was told she and the other victim were groomed from the age of 13 and forced to have sex with the men “whenever and wherever” they wanted – including on rancid mattresses, in car parks and alleyways. Both victims were given drugs, alcohol and cigarettes by the men involved, the court heard. They were also introduced to taxi drivers for sexual exploitation. The seven men found guilty, all of whom denied any wrongdoing, include: • Father-of-three Mohammed Zahid, 64, of Station Road, Crumpsall, Manchester. He was found guilty of 20 offences including rape, indecency with a …

‘Nobody Wants This’ Heartthrob Adam Brody Doesn’t Love Being a Sex Symbol: “It Makes Me a Little Self-Conscious”

Your wife, Leighton Meester, is going to be in the second season. What were the conversations like between the two of you about that? I said do it, and she said no. I’m just kidding. I don’t know. She’s her own person. I said, “Write her something funny, I’m sure she would love to do it,” and they wrote her something great. It wasn’t a hard decision. You’ve acted together before. Do you see her in a different light when you’re acting alongside her versus in your personal lives? I’m impressed by her all the time, but obviously, when I’m not seeing her work, I don’t get to be as impressed by her work. When I’m working with her, she can go as deep as anyone, and she has such clear access to her deepest emotions. But what I’ve been really impressed with, and I really started to see it in Single Parents—in the second season, I really saw her hit her stride as a comedian. To see her crush is cool. The two of …

The UK government is considering mandatory chemical castration for sex offenders – it’s an ethical and legal minefield

The UK government is considering mandatory chemical castration for sex offenders – it’s an ethical and legal minefield

Justice secretary Shabana Mahmood is looking into a potential “national rollout” of chemical castration for sex offenders. This is a process of lowering testosterone levels with the intention of reducing libido. The proposal is one recommendation outlined in the recent independent sentencing review that was commissioned to investigate prison overcrowding and consider alternatives to imprisonment. The review found that 21% of adults serving immediate custodial sentences had been convicted of sexual offences – making them a significant proportion of the prison population. The idea appears to be that chemical castration would make offenders’ release from prison less dangerous for the public. A pilot scheme of voluntary chemical castration is already running and is about to be extended to 20 British prisons. But while the review emphasised that consent is a key tenet of medical law, Mahmood is reportedly investigating whether chemical castration could be made mandatory. This raises important ethical and legal questions. Is chemical castration ethical? Chemical castration is a dual-purpose intervention. It can be used both to benefit those who receive testosterone-reducing substances …

The complexity of female sex hormones calls for more science, not less

The complexity of female sex hormones calls for more science, not less

In 1977, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) imposed a ban on women of childbearing age being included in early drug trials – even if they used contraception or had vasectomised partners. This was a reaction to harms caused by drugs like thalidomide, which can lead to birth defects. Even before the ban (which was lifted for non-pregnant women in 1993) women and female animals were regularly excluded from research – their fluctuating hormone levels seen as complicated noise. Female data is still often extrapolated from research on male animals. The cost of this lack of inclusion is clear: it has skewed our understanding of health and disease and left us woefully ill-informed about conditions that predominantly affect women. A classic example of this came in 2013, when more than 20 years after the sleep aid zolpidem was approved, the FDA halved the recommended dose for women as evidence emerged they experienced more daytime drowsiness than men, leading to more driving accidents. Progress is being made. Increasingly, researchers are considering sex as an important …

Scientists use economic game to reveal sex differences in jealousy triggers

Scientists use economic game to reveal sex differences in jealousy triggers

Stay informed on the latest psychology and neuroscience research—follow PsyPost on LinkedIn for daily updates and insights. Jealousy is triggered in response to real-world cues of resource allocation in romantic relationships, according to a new study published in Evolutionary Psychology. Jealousy is considered to be a protective emotion, emerging early in childhood and evolving as a way to defend important social relationships from perceived threats. In romantic contexts, researchers have observed distinct patterns in how men and women respond to potential threats. Evolutionary theories propose that jealousy evolved differently in men and women due to reproductive asymmetries, with women being more sensitive to losing a partner’s resources, while men are attuned to cues of sexual infidelity that threaten paternity certainty. María Teresa Barbato and colleagues explored whether these sex differences in jealousy could be triggered through economic decisions involving real partners. By adapting a modified version of the dictator game, a common tool in behavioral economics, the researchers investigated whether observing a partner allocate or receive money from a potential rival would differentially elicit jealousy …

Motown legend Smokey Robinson accused in lawsuit of ‘multiple sex assaults’ on four women who worked for him as housekeepers | Ents & Arts News

Four anonymous former housekeepers for Motown legend Smokey Robinson have claimed in a lawsuit he allegedly carried out multiple sexual assaults on them while they worked for him. The alleged attacks are said to have taken place at the singer’s Los Angeles home between 2007 and 2024, according to the women, who are seeking at least $50m (£37m) in damages in a civil case filed in the city. They also accuse him, in the suit, of creating a hostile work environment, forcing them to work illegally long hours and failing to pay what they were owed. News agencies in the US have been unable to independently verify the allegations and Robinson has been approached for comment. Image: Smokey Robinson and his wife Frances in Los Angeles in 2024. All the women, who have withheld their names for privacy reasons, eventually resigned over the assaults, the lawsuit claims, …

Psychedelics and sex: Research is starting to explore how these substances impact relationships

Psychedelics and sex: Research is starting to explore how these substances impact relationships

Stacie and her partner were in a rough spot in their relationship when they first decided to take psilocybin together, the psychedelic drug in so-called “magic mushrooms.” Long-term use of other drugs had caused Stacie to lose both of her jobs and her apartment. As a result, she moved back in with him, but they fought all of the time, she said. Constantly triggering past wounds in each other created distance in their relationship. For Stacie, her past experience as a sex worker had ingrained in her the idea that sex was transactional.  “I was a prostitute for so long … that my heart and my sexual organs weren’t really tied together,” Stacie, who is using a pseudonym to protect her privacy, told Salon in a phone interview. “It was a defense mechanism because of my past history.” Stacie decided to stop using meth, crack and cocaine on May 31, 2023. Soon after, she and her partner started taking psilocybin. When they took the mushrooms, they could communicate about what was going on in their …
