I’m Enamored With the Xiaomi 18 Pro Max’s Rear Second Screen

I’m Enamored With the Xiaomi 18 Pro Max’s Rear Second Screen

Chinese tech giant Xiaomi is officially the first phone-maker to use Qualcomm’s freshly unveiled premium chipsets in its new flagship phones. The Xiaomi 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max were announced on Wednesday in Beijing and are powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6, respectively, making them two of the most powerful smartphones on the market right now. But that market is initially limited to China, although a global launch for the phones will take place before the end of 2026. Like other Xiaomi phones, they won’t be coming to the US. I went hands-on with the phones at the Snapdragon Summit in Hawaii, where Qualcomm had lifted the lid on the new chips just 24 hours earlier. The two models look almost identical aside from size and bear more than a passing resemblance to the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max, which are also new this month. One major difference is the rear OLED screen, which sits beside the camera module (and was also on the …

What Is the Screen Replacing?

What Is the Screen Replacing?

Screens are a part of our children’s everyday lives. They can be educational, entertaining, and a meaningful way to connect with others. From my perspective, my focus isn’t on how much screen time, but rather, what is that screen replacing or what are our children avoiding? So, what is being replaced when our child has a phone in his or her face? Social connection: We all know that when our face is inside a screen, we miss conversations, body language, and the appearance of being approachable. Our kids look down at the phone when they feel awkward or uncomfortable, but then they look unapproachable and unavailable, and the cycle continues. By putting down the phone, our kids can have those awkward face to face conversations that will ultimately become less awkward. They can read body language, have difficult conversations and resolve conflict together. Physical activity: When we’re scrolling, we’re not moving. We’re not outside playing a sport or game, riding a bike, taking a walk. We’re sitting and draining our mental and physical energy. When …

Genesis GV90 turns into a luxury theater with a pop-up 24.6″ screen

The Genesis GV90 is more than an ultra-luxe people mover. With a pop-up OLED cinematic display that extends to 24.6″, the flagship SUV transforms into a personal luxury movie theater, complete with a 25-speaker Bang & Olufsen 3D Sound System. The Genesis GV90 raises the luxury bar It’s been three weeks since Genesis unveiled the GV90 at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco on August 19. We were invited out for a first look at the new flagship electric SUV. If you’ve seen the pictures, the GV90 is even more stunning in person. While the B-pillarless Neolun Arch Gate coach doors and swiveling seats stole the show, the pop-up Cinematic Display was another highlight. The GV90 is the first Hyundai Motor Group vehicle to feature the new extendable display and the first Genesis model equipped with its Pleos Connect infotainment system. Together, they create what Genesis calls a new realm of “display expandability.” While other vehicles, like the IONIQ 3, also use Pleos Connect, Hyundai developed an exclusive version for the GV90. Genesis …

Tim Curry: Mischievous screen star with a grin worth a thousand words

Tim Curry: Mischievous screen star with a grin worth a thousand words

Last year, I was fortunate enough to spend some time with the veteran record and film producer Lou Adler. The 92-year-old has enjoyed a singular career that included producing Carole King and directing a Cheech & Chong movie, but there was one anecdote he shared that made his face light up more than any of the other major stars he could casually name-drop. In 1972, he recalled, he visited a tiny theatre in London and saw a madcap production that blended schlocky B-movie horror and Fifties rock’n’roll. “Can you imagine,” he asked me, still a little awestruck, “Seeing Tim Curry for the first time?” The show, of course, was Rocky Horror, which Adler immediately optioned and brought to Hollywood, where it was adapted into The Rocky Horror Picture Show three years later. The film became a runaway hit, grossing over $170 million worldwide (having cost 1/100th of that) and going on to have the longest-running theatrical release in movie history. It also launched Curry, who has died at the age of 80, to international fame. …

Dolly Parton Lit Up the Screen With Her Authentic Self: Critic Tribute

Dolly Parton Lit Up the Screen With Her Authentic Self: Critic Tribute

When Jane Fonda was developing the rollicking 1980 workplace farce 9 to 5, inspired by a real-life women’s rights organization of that name, at some point the project shape-shifted from the serious drama that was originally planned to a comedy, enlisting the brilliant Colin Higgins to direct and work on the screenplay with Patricia Resnick. Having cast Lily Tomlin as her acerbic ally in the secretarial pool, Fonda and producer Bruce Gilbert wanted to broaden the film’s appeal, landing on the idea of a third lead who might push beyond urban liberals to reach mainstream, conservative and Southern audiences. From that commercially-driven demographic strategy, Dolly Parton the Movie Star was born. As Doralee Rhodes, the happily married secretary of Dabney Coleman’s lecherous corporate vice president, kept busy dodging his unwelcome advances, Parton was a natural. Her luminosity, effervescence, folksy delivery and innate comic timing infused the film with livewire energy, whether she was fantasizing about hog-tieing and spit-roasting the boss or bringing that fantasy to life, like a seasoned rodeo queen. The movie became a massive …

The heartbreaking family struggles that shaped Hayden Panettiere’s life off screen

The heartbreaking family struggles that shaped Hayden Panettiere’s life off screen

A tricky relationship with a stage “mom”, addiction, depression and a custody row – all of these were storylines that the actor Hayden Panettiere had to grapple with during her stint on the TV show Nashville, playing a talented but troubled young country singer. Off screen, the Golden Globe nominee was dealing with similar conflicts. “My character, Juliette, and me as Hayden, I didn’t know where one person began and the other one ended,” she later admitted. Having to act out episodes that were being mirrored in her personal life, and serve them up for the viewing pleasure of an audience, can’t have been easy. But these fictionalised struggles only ever really provided a surface look at what the star, who has died at the age of 36, was going through behind the scenes. On Monday morning, her father Skip Panettiere announced her “tragic passing”, describing the former child star, best known for her role as a high school cheerleader with superpowers in the TV drama Heroes, as “an incredible light and a force of …
