Many people will experience knee pain at some point in their lives, whether from injuries to cartilage and soft tissue as active younger adults, or from wear and tear as they age. As your largest joint, your knees absorb force when you’re playing sports, taking the stairs and getting into bed. That stress can wear down your joints and, if you already have an injury, lead to pain that can range from uncomfortable to debilitating. Chronic pain can be particularly draining – physically, financially and emotionally, said Dr Matthew Abdel, an orthopaedic surgeon at the Mayo Clinic. Someone might not say, “‘Hey, my knee’s really killing me,’” he said. “But as they’re talking to you about something that’s totally unrelated, they’re thinking about it.” Fortunately, there are steps you can take to manage the discomfort, maintain your mobility and prevent future injury. “You don’t just necessarily go from ‘my knee hurts’ to having surgery,” said Robert Turner, a physical …

But while using it seems relatively straightforward, the technique of how to apply it, how much and how often is very particular when it comes to our scalp health. According to lead trichologist and brand president at Philip Kingsley, Anabel Kingsley, dry shampoo should be seen as a temporary fix, not a replacement for proper cleansing. “Unlike real shampoo, which is rinsed away with water, dry shampoo does not remove skin secretions, dead skin cells, dirt and product debris. “A day or two of using a dry shampoo is fine, but any longer without a ‘real shampoo’ …

Are you suffering from “cognitive atrophy” due to AI overuse?

The retirement of West Midlands police chief Craig Guildford is a wake-up call for those of us using artificial intelligence (AI) tools at work and in our personal lives. Guildford lost the confidence of the home secretary after it was revealed that the force used incorrect AI-generated evidence in their controversial decision to ban Israeli football fans from attending a match. This is a particularly egregious example, but many people may be falling victim to the same phenomenon – outsourcing the “struggle” of thinking to AI. As an expert on how new technology reshapes society and the human experience, I have observed a growing phenomenon which I and other researchers refer to as “cognitive atrophy”. Essentially, AI is replacing tasks many people have grown reluctant to do themselves – thinking, writing, creating, analysing. But when we don’t use these skills, they can decline. We also risk getting things very, very wrong. Generative AI works by predicting likely words from patterns trained on vast amounts of data. When you ask it to write an email or …
