A speculative mission concept proposes sending laser-powered, gram-scale spacecraft to a black hole that could potentially exist within 20 to 25 light-years of Earth. Traveling at roughly one-third the speed of light, a nanocraft could reach such a target in 60 to 75 years, with data returning to Earth after another 20 to 25 years. Multiple probes near the black hole could test the Kerr description of spacetime, investigate whether an event horizon exists and search for changes in fundamental constants. Humanity may someday attempt something considerably more ambitious than photographing a black hole: sending a spacecraft directly to one. The idea would require a suitable black hole to be discovered surprisingly close to Earth, along with technologies that do not yet exist. But calculations suggest the journey is not forbidden by physics. Cosimo Bambi of Fudan University explores the concept in iScience, describing gram-scale spacecraft propelled by enormous ground-based laser arrays. If a black hole exists 20 to 25 light-years away, a probe traveling at one-third the speed of light could reach it in …
The outline of a manor house where Henry VII is believed to have been born has become visible because of exceptionally dry weather. It emerged on grass at Pembroke Castle in South Wales after this summer’s heatwaves created parch marks – contrasting lines that form above long-buried walls and foundations. Although a faint outline of some of the walls has shown up before, in exceptionally dry summers, this year’s is the clearest it has been, with experts hoping it may offer insights to archaeologists. John Donoghue, who works at the castle in Pembrokeshire as a guide, photographed the shape of the building within the walled ward, a fortified area of the castle. In the 15th century, Henry VII’s birth to Lady Margaret Beaufort, who was 13 years old, was seen as a miracle – DeAgostini/Getty Images Mr Donoghue, who is the author of Castles, Crime and Cake: A Policeman’s Accidental Guide to History, said: “It was known that there was a manor house there – and it’s believed that the future King Henry VII was …

Speaking backstage before the Prada show at Milan fashion week on Sunday, the co-designers Miuccia Prada and Raf Simons described their latest collection as “breaking the perception of what is perceived as typical luxury in high fashion right now”. This was a purified version of Prada. The design duo called it a “rejection of experimental shapes, techniques and decoration” distilling the collection to pieces that are “intentional and meaningful”. Simons compared it to pasta al pomodoro – “little ingredients but well executed”. The components of this Prada fashion recipe he said included “jeans, a jeans jacket, a T-shirt, one timeless blazer and a leather blouson”. A pair of jeans was the design duo’s ‘universal’ starting point. Photograph: WWD/Getty Images Prada said that once they had decided on their proposal of “one idea and variations on one idea”, their starting point was jeans as they were “the most universal item in fashion”. The opening look on the catwalk consisted of white jeans, a white denim jacket and a navy blazer. None of the show’s 50 looks …
WASHINGTON, April 29 (Reuters) – The U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday approved a three-year budget plan that would pave the way for Congress to consider an additional $70 billion for immigration enforcement activities by federal agents. The House voted 215-211, with no Democrats supporting it. House Speaker Mike Johnson held the vote open for more than five hours as he worked to get enough of his fellow Republicans to embrace the measure. Some, from farm states, were holding out for a future vote on expanding sales of gasoline blended with ethanol. The Senate approved the plan on April 23. With the House going along, it will be up to Republicans in both chambers to put together details of the $70-billion proposal and win passage before sending it to President Donald Trump to sign into law. Republicans are hoping to do so in May and will be using a special, rarely used procedure that allows them to steer the legislation through the Senate without any support from Democrats. Republicans used the same procedure last year …

Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth and Secretary of State Marco Rubio speak to reporters Wednesday following a closed door briefing with senators on the U.S. capture of Venezuela’s Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores. Heather Dieh/Getty Images hide caption toggle caption Heather Dieh/Getty Images Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth briefed the Senate and House this morning on the U.S. capture of Venezuela President Nicolás Maduro over the weekend and the administration’s next steps. The pair detailed a process of “stabilization,” “recovery” and “transition.” Rubio told reporters step one will involve “quarantine” for Venezuela, a process that will include selling sanctioned oil and distributing the profits. “We don’t want it descending into chaos,” Rubio said. “Part of that stabilization and the reason why we understand and believe that we have the strongest leverage possible is our quarantine.” Rubio went on to explain that the continued seizure of oil tankers is part of the plan, in addition to the process of selling sanctioned oil. U.S. forces seized a Russian-flagged oil …
