About 500 evacuated as wildfire rages on Croatian island of Brac

ZAGREB: About 500 people have been evacuated on the Croatian Adriatic island of Brac as a wildfire raged on the popular tourist spot famous for its white sand beach. Authorities sounded the alarm shortly before midnight on Saturday (Sep 13) as flames threatened to get close to homes in the small town of Milna in the west of the island. Eight airports in Indonesia suspend operations after volcanic eruption

Eight airports in Indonesia suspend operations after volcanic eruption

Indonesia halted operations at its main international airport outside Jakarta on Sunday after ash spewed from the Anak Krakatoa volcano more than 150 kilometres away, impacting thousands of passengers. Mount Anak Krakatoa erupted on Saturday, producing a fountain of lava and booming sounds that could be heard up to a few hundred kilometres away, the geology agency said in a statement. Two new eruptions were recorded on Sunday, the volcanology agency warned. Ash from the volcano was detected in the airspace surrounding Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, prompting authorities to initially suspend operations from 1:30am Sunday (Saturday 18:30 GMT) to 5:30am. The suspension was extended three times, with the latest ending at 5:30pm Sunday “due to increased eruptive activity”, the airport said in a social media post. Operations have also been suspended at seven other airports including the Husein Sastranegara airport in Bandung and Radin Inten II airport near Bandar Lampung on Sumatra, the transportation ministry said in a statement.  Several airports in cities, including Semarang and Surabaya, have been prepared as “alternatives for landing”, Dudy added. …

‘I don’t know if I’m dreaming’: Rebuilding lives after Nepal’s devastating floods

Thirty kilometres from the Nepal-China border, a school in the remote Himalayan region has opened its doors to around 200 people driven from their homes by the catastrophic flash flood last week that left their village largely buried beneath the mud. Aid workers bringing badly needed supplies can travel up to nine hours along a winding dirt road to reach Rasuwa district near the disaster’s epicentre. “Food is scarce, so I’m bringing rice, lentils and oil,” said Madhav Neupane, a Human Development and Community Services employee. “There is no electricity, so we’re also bringing solar power banks. Since people are homeless, we’ve also got tents with us.” Read moreWhy early warning signs of glacier collapse in Nepal were difficult to detect Many of the people now crammed into the school are still waiting for news of their loved ones. “I don’t know if I’m dreaming or if it’s real. I’ve lost 11 members of my family,” said flood survivor Ranjina Tamang. “Some are missing, others may be dead – I don’t know.” Elsewhere, the frantic search …
