MILAN, Feb 11 : Piper Gilles and Paul Poirier offered proof of the reward that perseverance through hardship can bring when they captured Canada’s first Olympic podium in eight years at the Winter Games’ ice dance event on Wednesday. With an overall score of 217.74 points, their season best, the five-times Canadian champions kept ahead of home contenders Charlene Guignard and Marco Fabbri and British medal hopefuls Lilah Fear and Lewis Gibson.   “When I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, I don’t think I envisioned this moment but … if you continue to lead with your heart, anything can happen,” said Gilles, whose light blue dress with golden circles echoed Vincent van Gogh’s Starry Night. “For anybody going through any kind of dark time … if you can just get out of bed and keep believing in yourself … anything can happen,” she said. The pair had burst into tears after completing their free programme. Gilles then greeted the score by jumping on her feet. Dancing to Govardo’s acoustic ballad “Vincent” in the free dance segment, …

Italy’s Tomba and Compagnoni share honour of lighting Milan cauldron

MILAN, Feb 6 : Alberto Tomba and Deborah Compagnoni, two of Italy’s greatest Alpine skiers, shared the honour of lighting the Olympic cauldron in Milan on Friday. Tomba, 59, and Compagnoni, who is 55, were part of a golden age of Italian skiing and both won Olympic titles at the Albertville Games in 1992. Tomba and Compagnoni lit the flame at Milan’s Arco della Pace, a 19th-century arch at the entrance to Parco Sempione, about 4 km (2.5 miles) east of San Siro stadium. A second cauldron was lit in Cortina d’Ampezzo by another Italian former Olympic champion, Sofia Goggia. Hailing from the northern city of Bologna, Tomba was an outlier in a sport dominated by mountain folk. His penchant for playing to the crowd made him one of Italy’s best known sportsmen. Compagnoni comes from the mountains of northern Italy, and the choice of the pair fits with the idea of harmony between different regions, one of the themes of the Games. ‘TOMBA LA BOMBA’ WAS TV FAVOURITE For Tomba, victory in Albertville followed …

Hyundai’s Boston Dynamics scoops up Tesla’s former Optimus head Milan Kovac

Hyundai’s Boston Dynamics has hired Milan Kovac, Tesla’s former senior vice president and head of the Optimus humanoid robot program, as a group adviser and outside director. The move is a major blow to Tesla’s humanoid robot ambitions and a significant coup for Hyundai, which is clearly serious about dominating the nascent humanoid robot market. Kovac, a Belgian national, joined Tesla in 2016 and played a key role in developing the company’s Autopilot driver-assistance system before being elevated to lead the entire Optimus humanoid robot program. He left Tesla in June 2025 just months after being promoted to senior vice president by CEO Elon Musk – a departure that sent the Optimus program into disarray and forced a production delay due to an unexpected redesign. According to a report from KED Global, Hyundai appointed Kovac as a group adviser and outside director for Boston Dynamics, its robotics subsidiary, on Friday. The timing couldn’t be worse for Tesla The announcement comes just days after Boston Dynamics unveiled its next-generation Atlas humanoid robot at CES 2026, where …
