Waymo Puts Toronto on the Map for Its Robotaxis

Waymo Puts Toronto on the Map for Its Robotaxis

Waymo is bringing its autonomous ride services across the border to Canada for the first time.  The company said in a blog post on Friday that its robotaxis will be available for you to book rides in the app in the Toronto area in 2028. It will start with a limited number of its mainstay Jaguar I-Pace electric SUVs, and will add more over time.  But if you’re in Toronto, you can expect to see Waymo cars, driven by humans, in the coming days as the company maps local street networks and acclimates its autonomous technology to traffic patterns and driving conditions. Waymo will test in select Toronto neighborhoods, including Liberty Village, St. Lawrence Market and Yorkdale. It has also built a sixth-generation Waymo Driver autonomous driving system to navigate diverse environments, including the extreme winter weather Toronto faces in the colder months. A Waymo representative did not immediately respond to a request for further comment. The company is also partnering with Toronto-based Element Fleet Management for vehicle maintenance, validation driving and customer service. Waymo …

Quantum sensor breakthrough could finally map proteins and other biomolecules

Quantum sensor breakthrough could finally map proteins and other biomolecules

Waterloo physicists kept molecular sensor spins coherent for about 400 microseconds, roughly 60 times longer than a standard comparison technique. Mechanical readout detected weak magnetic fields and small groups of nuclear spins, offering a route toward molecular-scale sensing. The experiment used about 140 sensor molecules under cryogenic conditions; imaging an individual protein remains a future goal. A single molecule, suspended at the edge of detectability, could soon help scientists map the structure of life itself. Researchers at the Institute for Quantum Computing at the University of Waterloo have introduced a new sensing method that moves science closer to that goal. Their work shows how a single molecule can act as a quantum sensor, opening a new path for studying proteins and other biomolecules at the smallest scales. A New Way To See The Invisible Understanding how molecules behave has long challenged scientists. Proteins, for example, fold into complex shapes that control how they function. These shapes influence everything from cell growth to disease. Yet many current imaging tools require large samples, making it difficult to …

Hurricane Isaias tracker: Map and projected storm path

Hurricane Isaias tracker: Map and projected storm path

Isaias has become a Category 3 hurricane and continues north on a path toward the southeastern United States. It is on track to make landfall around Pensacola, in the Florida Panhandle late Friday. Flooding, storm surge and tornadoes are likely along the northern Gulf Coast, especially in southern Alabama, coastal Mississippi and Georgia, with impacts stretching well inland from the coast by Sunday. The shifting Senate map: From the Politics Desk

Welcome to From the Politics Desk, a daily newsletter that brings you the NBC News Politics team’s latest reporting and analysis from the White House, Capitol Hill and the campaign trail. In today’s edition, Bridget Bowman digs into a major development in the battle for the Senate. Plus, Kristen Welker examines the headwinds facing the GOP as President Donald Trump kicks off his midterm tour. — Adam Wollner The shifting Senate map By Bridget Bowman A big move today from a leading Republican super PAC underscores the increasingly tough Senate landscape the party is confronting as it tries to hang on to its majority. Senate Leadership Fund, which is aligned with Senate GOP leadership, canceled its future ad spending in the Senate race in battleground North Carolina and launched a new ad effort in deep-red Kansas. (Semafor was first to report the news.) Republicans have been pessimistic for weeks about their prospects in North Carolina, with former Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper leading in recent polling and outspending former Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Whatley. SLF …

Canadian radio telescope (CHIME) is turning hydrogen into a map of cosmic expansion

Canadian radio telescope (CHIME) is turning hydrogen into a map of cosmic expansion

A faint radio signal emitted when the universe was roughly 5 billion years old has emerged from beneath layers of cosmic and human-made noise. The Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment, or CHIME, has detected the large-scale clustering of neutral hydrogen using only its own radio observations. Earlier CHIME results had depended on comparing its maps with galaxies or other structures already identified by separate surveys. The measurement, published in The Astrophysical Journal, represents an important milestone for a telescope originally designed to map hydrogen across enormous portions of the universe. It could eventually give cosmologists another way to reconstruct cosmic expansion and investigate dark energy, the still-unexplained phenomenon associated with the universe’s accelerating expansion. “This is a completely new technique for probing the cosmos, delivered by an instrument that was conceived, built and funded by Canadians,” said co-author Dr. Mark Halpern, professor in the UBC department of physics and astronomy and CHIME principal investigator. “It’s a bold new step in the global cosmology program and a Canadian success story.” CHIME detected ancient hydrogen using only …

Supreme Court bars Republican-drawn map in Missouri for third time

Supreme Court bars Republican-drawn map in Missouri for third time

People gather at the Missouri statehouse in Jefferson City, Missouri, on Wednesday, Sept. 10, 2025, to protest the legislature’s efforts to change the state’s congressional district maps. Tammy Ljungblad | Kansas City Star | Getty Images The US Supreme Court, acting for a third time in a fierce battle over the makeup of Missouri’s congressional districts, barred the state on Friday from using a redrawn map designed to favor Republicans in November’s elections, a setback for President Donald Trump‘s party as it fights to keep control of Congress. The justices granted a request by the map’s challengers, including a group called People Not Politicians, to suspend lower court decisions that had required the reconfigured US House of Representatives district boundaries to be used in the November 3 midterm elections. The dispute, waged in both state and federal courts, has led to multiple conflicting court rulings, leaving Missouri’s House districts in limbo as the legal wrangling raced back and forth to the top US judicial body. Absentee voting is already underway in Missouri. The Supreme Court’s …

Supreme Court blocks Trump-backed Missouri congressional map : NPR

People opposed to a congressional redistricting plan rally outside the Missouri Capitol in Jefferson City, Mo., earlier this month. David A. Lieb/AP hide caption toggle caption David A. Lieb/AP In a case watched across the country and as voting begins in the midterm elections, the Supreme Court blocked a congressional map in Missouri that was aimed at netting Republicans another seat in the U.S. House. This is the third time the high court has blocked the redistricting plan that could have helped oust Democratic Rep. Emanuel Cleaver by increasing the number of Republican voters in his district. The court warned that changing maps now would cause “electoral chaos.” The decision requires the state use the same districts provided to voters in 2022 and 2024. That’s even though a different map was used in the primaries there last month. It comes after weeks of conflicting rulings in state courts and federal courts. Elections officials in Missouri already started mailing some absentee ballots last week using the old districts and some argued it would be too late …

Control Resonant map: Full map of all zones

The sprawling streets of Manhattan make up the map of Control Resonant. Open-ended rather than open world, the map is split into seven distinct zones, each requiring you to set up Map Kits to unveil the full thing. So, if you want to get a better look at the Control Resonant map, here’s a look at each of the seven zones. Control Resonant map: Full map of all zones Control Resonant’s map is unlocked in stages. As Dylan progresses through the story, new areas become available, and you can use Map Kits to fill out the map. These are: Downtown Central West Incursion Zone Evacuation Zone The Park Underpass Unknown It should be noted that certain areas do not have a map at all, such as the Patterned Factory in Central.
