Why a Liverpool imam reached out to a far-right rally outside his mosque – video | Liverpool

As violent unrest erupted across the country last week after the killing of three girls in Southport, about 50 people turned up to a far-right rally outside the Abdullah Quilliam Society mosque in nearby Liverpool. Hundreds more turned up to support the mosque, which is the oldest in the country. But the imam Adam Kelwick decided not to stay inside. He and other members of his community stepped out with hot food and crossed the police line, determined to speak to the people on the other side. ‘The reason it’s so important to talk right now is because we see what the other option is,’ says Kelwick, who believes that talking to people, even in extreme circumstances, can help heal divisions Source link

We are raiding the Guardian Long Read archives to bring you some classic pieces from years past, with new introductions from the authors. This week, from 2021: During the second world war, Chinese merchant seamen helped keep Britain fed, fuelled and safe – and many gave their lives doing so. But from late 1945, hundreds of them who had settled in Liverpool suddenly disappeared. Now their children are piecing together the truth. The woman feeding Liverpool from an ice-cream van – video | UK cost of living crisis

Michelle Roach bought a used ice-cream van in order to bring cheap, affordable food to Liverpool’s struggling communities. She wanted a vehicle with freezers built in for frozen food, and also something cheerful that was able to break down stigmas around food poverty. Using a ’10 items for £5′ model, Michelle sources discount food from supermarket surplus and donations. The Guardian’s Christopher Cherry follows Michelle and the van on its rounds, with the service struggling to meet overwhelming demand as the cost of living crisis deepens, and the UK’s general election fast approaches. 10 absurd moments you might have missed

10 absurd moments you might have missed

Douze points for the Scousers. Yes, the grand final of the Eurovision Song Contest 2023 was a triumph for host city Liverpool, staging the event on behalf of war-torn Ukraine.  After a nail-bitingly tight finish, Swedish dance-pop diva Loreen won the coveted crystal microphone with her soaring anthem Tattoo. Following her victory with Euphoria in 2012, Loreen became only the second act in Eurovision history to win twice (after Ireland’s Johnny Logan, fact fans). Sadly the UK’s Mae Muller had less luck, finishing in 25th place – a chastening second from bottom. “Not the result we hoped for,” she tweeted with masterful understatement. It was a deliriously over-the-top audio-visual extravaganza but across the epic four-hour broadcast, it was easy to blink and miss things. Here’s a handy rewind of 10 lighter moments you might have missed: 1. Mel Giedroyc churning butter Graham Norton had a frantic night, dashing between his usual post in the BBC commentary booth and on-stage hosting duties. When he wasn’t behind the mic, Mel Giedroyc filled in with her gently sarcastic …

Harry Kane’s mask slips – now we finally see how much his trophy curse means

Harry Kane’s mask slips – now we finally see how much his trophy curse means

At the Bernabeu on Wednesday night, the television cameras caught Harry Kane watching the last few moments of Bayern Munich’s late meltdown from behind one of the high-backed dugout chairs and briefly let slip the customary mask of composure. Kane is an unusual modern footballer in that he rarely permits himself to convey a flicker of vulnerability in the difficult moments. For the hundreds of hours he has spent on a pitch, it is hard to recall much overt Kane despair beyond the occasional bout of staring into the mid-distance. Yet as the Real Madrid comeback unfolded on the pitch he slumped, pressed his forehead dolefully into the seat in front of him and could no longer watch. At 30, of course, and still without a trophy, his tale is one of the compelling stories of football. How the great English goalscorer of his generation ended up with nothing by this stage of his career is a remarkable outcome. He will doubtless win something domestically eventually at a dysfunctional Bayern, still without a manager for …

Van Dijk wants to be part of Liverpool transition after Klopp leaves

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk said he is happy at the Premier League club and wants to be part of the transition once manager Juergen Klopp departs. The 32-year-old’s contract runs out at the end of the 2024-25 season, with British media reporting that the Dutch international is a target for Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund. After Klopp announced his departure in January, Van Dijk said he was unsure about his future but the defender now looks set to remain at the club, who are expected to name Arne Slot as their next manager. “The focus is now on the last two games and then the club will focus on who the new manager is and there will be a big transition and I am part of that,” Van Dijk told British media. “There is nothing for me to discuss (regarding my future) because there is no news. Like I said, I am very happy here, I love the club and you can see that as well. It’s a big part of my life already. “There …

Jurgen Klopp lets rip at TNT Sports in rant about Liverpool fixtures

Telegraph Sport has been told a number of stakeholders and factors are taken into consideration when it comes to Premier League fixture scheduling, including fans’ travel arrangements, clubs competing in other competitions, broadcast slots and local authority matters including policing. A ban was also introduced three years ago on TNT picking teams for the Saturday 12.30pm slot if they were playing away in the Champions League the Wednesday night beforehand. TNT is also prohibited from selecting a single club for that slot on more than six occasions. Klopp still furious at VAR howler in Liverpool defeat to Tottenham Klopp says he has ‘500 reasons’ for wanting to beat Tottenham this weekend following the controversial meeting of the sides earlier this season. Liverpool were denied a legal Luis Diaz goal in their 2-1 defeat to Spurs in October, VAR failing to communicate correctly that the Colombian was onside. The PGMOL admitted ‘significant human error’ after the audio revealed a shambolic process which failed to inform referee Simon Cooper to give the goal. Klopp remains livid that …
