The golden ambition of “Legally Blonde” can’t be tarnished

The golden ambition of “Legally Blonde” can’t be tarnished

When “Legally Blonde” first came out, I was ready to write off Elle Woods for similar reasons many first- and second-wave feminists dismissed Marilyn Monroe. Gloria Steinem spoke at length about her early presumptions about Monroe in a 2006 interview, admitting that one of the few films in her life that made her walk out of the theater was “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.” “I was embarrassed by her because she was a joke,” Steinem told Gail Levin, who directed a documentary about the screen icon for “American Masters.” “She was vulnerable. She was so eager for approval. She was all the things that I feared most, being a teenage girl.” Only much later in life did Steinem, who wrote a biography about Monroe, realize her initial disdain wasn’t the actress’ fault. Monroe was simply playing the part assigned to her by a patriarchal society, capitalizing on a male-approved artificial creation that made her a star. Elle Woods, as Reese Witherspoon originated her, posed a similar psychological obstacle for me, only the challenge was getting me into …

Reese Witherspoon Kept Her Original Legally Blonde Costumes. None Made It to the Prequel Series, Elle—Here’s Why

The mere idea of relocating Elle Woods, the most legal—and most California—of blondes, seems and is preposterous. And yet that is the exact premise of the Legally Blonde prequel series, Elle, which premiered on Amazon Prime Video today. The show is as fun and bubbly as one would anticipate and hope it to be, but it is its fashion that takes the spotlight alongside its star, Lexi Minetree, who settles nicely into Reese Witherspoon’s shoes. The costumes, which range from vintage Chanel to custom-made pieces and contemporary fashion, were designed by Sara Byblow, whose name you will certainly hear more following her work on Elle. Byblow, who first worked with Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine production company while doing the costumes for Surface, partnered with original Legally Blonde costumer Sophie De Rakoff for the first episodes of the season. “It felt like a passing of the torch,” Byblow says as we speak days before the release of the show. As charming as Byblow’s architecture of young Elle Woods’s style is, with its junior-prep silhouettes and many shades …

Critics Have Some Objections To The 'Nonsensical' Legally Blonde Prequel Elle

Critics Have Some Objections To The 'Nonsensical' Legally Blonde Prequel Elle

Lexi Minetree as Elle Woods in the new Legally Blonde prequel Elle The iconic Legally Blonde character Elle Woods is officially back on our screens in a new TV show depicting her life long before law school. Launching on Wednesday on Amazon Prime, Elle follows a 16-year-old version of our beloved pink-wearing lawyer-in-training, the character made famous by Reese Witherspoon in the early 2000s. While Reese is still involved in this new project as an executive producer, the Oscar winner, understandably, couldn’t play a teenager, which is why newcomer Lexi Minetree, whose spot-on audition went viral, was cast as the young heroine Elle. Set years before the events of Legally Blonde, Elle follows the title character as she moves from her shiny, pastel world in Los Angeles to a grungy Seattle. Unfortunately, critics are not exactly enamoured with Elle, with many disagreeing with the direction the character was taken in this new TV spin-off. While some have praised Lexi’s leading performance – and the show’s nostalgic 1990s setting – others felt that the show paled …

You can watch more live sports for free than you think (legally)

Here is a fact cable companies would rather you not think about: a surprising number of live sports are still completely free to watch. Not a trial, not a temporary promo, and not a subscription you need to remember to cancel. It’s easy to see why people assume otherwise. Sports rights are one of the biggest battlegrounds in streaming, with companies spending billions to lock up NFL games, NBA playoffs, and MLB rights. All that noise makes it feel like access to live sports costs money by default. But broadcast TV never went away, free streaming apps have picked up real sports rights, and leagues themselves still offer more free access than many fans realize. The trick is knowing where to look, and it starts with a piece of hardware that has been sitting in relative obscurity since the streaming era began.
