Report on Artist Legacy Stewardship Issued by Joan Mitchell Foundation

Report on Artist Legacy Stewardship Issued by Joan Mitchell Foundation

What does it take to preserve an artist’s legacy? “You can only learn how to do this by doing it,” Solana Chehtman, director of artist programs at the Joan Mitchell Foundation, offered in response to a question that animates an ambitious new report titled Creating Future Memory: Building the Field of Artist Legacy Stewardship, published by the Mitchell Foundation. “There are so many ways in which people can have a hand in this work, and we want to a raise awareness and give visibility to efforts happening around the country.” Related Articles The 80-page report, now available for free download at the foundation’s website, is an extension of the enterprise’s long-running Creating a Living Legacy (CALL) initiative and a 2025 convening that brought together 145 figures working on matters related to preservation and longevity for artists and their work. Among the attendees at the gathering in New York were archivists, conservators, grantmakers, estate executors, leaders of artist-endowed foundations, and, of course, artists themselves. “What we heard from participants at the convening was both inspiring and …

Jobs, Wildfires & 9/11’s Legacy: Week in Review | U.S. News Decision Points

Jobs, Wildfires & 9/11’s Legacy: Week in Review | U.S. News Decision Points

The labor market’s stubborn stagnancy could make it harder for job-seekers to find openings and wage gains. States reckon with Flock camera controversies and wildfire fallout. And 9/11-era public policy continues to shape the country. I’m Stella Garner, here with the week in review. Tuesday  After Labor Day, Tim Smart filled in for Olivier with a look at what the “low-hire, low-fire” labor market means for workers. Although the market has created a steady flow of jobs this year, job-seekers are finding fewer openings and lower wage gains for those switching roles. The modern job search now requires patience and strategy, recognizing the increasing demand for soft skills like critical thinking and curiosity. But as Tim points out, …

9/11’s harmful legacy of Latino criminalization

9/11’s harmful legacy of Latino criminalization

Exactly 25 years ago today, my parents were getting me ready to go to kindergarten, when I looked up at the TV in our living room and saw the World Trade Center on fire. Even at such a young age, I understood the gravity of the situation — but even now, the scale of the damage is hard to wrap my mind around. While nearly 3,000 people died as a direct result of the Sept. 11 attacks, thousands more died due to the toxic fumes spread across New York City after the towers crumbled. A myriad of others are still dealing with cancers linked to the noxious air produced by the event. But the scale of disaster from the attacks reached far beyond the tragedy of the day. Politicians leveraged the situation to justify a “war on terror” internationally and expand mass surveillance within U.S. borders. With the plane hijackers hailing from countries predominantly populated by Arabs and Muslims, 9/11 also became a launching point for a strengthened wave of Islamophobia and anti-Muslim sentiment. According …

Raiding the past: Lara Croft relives her first adventure in Legacy of Atlantis | Tomb Raider

Raiding the past: Lara Croft relives her first adventure in Legacy of Atlantis | Tomb Raider

We join Lara Croft in St Francis’ Folly – inspired by the Unesco-listed monasteries of Meteora in Greece – as the light shines through the cracked ceiling and a flock of bats glide across the vast ruins below. When Lara leaps down to the monastery’s crumbling pillared courtyard, it becomes clear that these screeching, leathery creatures aren’t just set dressing. As they lurch towards her with unpredictable movements, she dispatches the swarm with a flurry of gun fire and panicked punches. It’s a suitably cinematic reintroduction to our heroine and her very first adventure. Co-developed by longtime Lara custodians Crystal Dynamics and Polish studio Flying Wild Hog, Legacy of Atlantis is a reimagining of the classic 1996 game Tomb Raider, and this familiar cliffside location is now brimming with new life and believable detail. Yet while our reunion gets off to an auspicious start, I have my concerns. It feels like reconnecting with an old friend at the pub, only for them to begin spouting conspiracy theories two pints in. Where the ’96 original forced …

The Real Legacy of Lonnie Bunch

The Real Legacy of Lonnie Bunch

Americans may not realize for many years just how lucky they were that Lonnie G. Bunch III led the Smithsonian Institution from 2019 to 2026. Bunch has announced that he will step down at the end of this year. He insists that the timing is his own, and we should do him the honor of believing him—notwithstanding the immense pressure the administration has applied to the Smithsonian generally and Bunch personally since Donald Trump returned to office last year. Bunch, 73, would likely have chosen to retire earlier if not for his sense of duty—his conviction (which few dispute) that he was the best person to guide the Smithsonian through a turbulent period. The Smithsonian is the world’s largest museum, education, and research complex. It’s also “part of the glue,” as Bunch himself said shortly after taking office, “that holds the country together.” Since his appointment as the Smithsonian’s top official—its 14th secretary and the first historian and Black man to hold the position—in June 2019, Bunch has been the glue holding the Smithsonian together. …

‘Peaceful’ Sweden once sought nuclear weapons. That legacy still shapes defence planning

‘Peaceful’ Sweden once sought nuclear weapons. That legacy still shapes defence planning

For decades, Sweden has fostered a self-image as something of a world record-holder for peace, celebrating more than two centuries since it was last at war. But this record involves some creative accounting. The narrative, for example, excludes Sweden’s participation in modern-day military operations in Afghanistan and Libya. Nor has Swedish “peacefulness” been entirely pacifist. The country operated one of the world’s largest air forces during the cold war, for example. But less well known is how far Sweden progressed towards developing nuclear weapons of its own. Despite never producing a bomb, the history of its unrealised nuclear weapons programme offers important insights for understanding security policy today. Back in 1945, just months after the US had dropped nuclear bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Swedish military researchers began investigating this new weapon. In 1948, the defence staff asked the Swedish National Defence Research Institute (FOA) to examine the possibility of producing atomic bombs in Sweden. We think we know Sweden – a peaceful nation grounded in social democracy, natural beauty, IKEA …

Living With Their Legacy: Understanding Celebrity Losses

Living With Their Legacy: Understanding Celebrity Losses

Last week, the world said goodbye to three cultural icons: Dolly Parton, Tim Curry, and Peter Cullen. For many, the news brought a sense of unexpected grief not only for three beloved Hollywood stars but also for the memories, eras, and pieces of our lives that have become intertwined with their legacies. Dolly’s seven-decade-long career saw her sell over 100 million records and win 10 Grammys. Beyond her music, her fierce personality, philanthropy, and openness about her own adversities touched the hearts of millions of people. Tim Curry’s career spanned over six decades, bringing his light, representation, and magic to the stage, film, and TV. A key part of the imprint he leaves behind includes making The Rocky Horror Picture Show the global cultural craze it is. Peter Cullen was a well-known Canadian voice actor who left his mark through his roles as Optimus Prime and Eeyore in the Transformers and Winnie the Pooh universes, respectively. Although most of us never knew these figures personally, their voices, music, and characters have accompanied us through decades …

Band of Brothers: Legacy documentary trailer released

Band of Brothers: Legacy documentary trailer released

HBO Max has released a trailer for Band of Brothers: Legacy, the upcoming documentary marking 25 years since the World War II miniseries first aired – and excitingly, it brings together original cast members to reflect on the acclaimed project. The film arrives on HBO Max on Wednesday 9 September, and forms the centrepiece of the streamer’s 25th-anniversary commemoration of the drama. Featuring new interviews with stars including Damian Lewis and Ron Livingston, the documentary also boasts never-before-seen archival footage, photographs and additional video diaries recorded by Livingston and Richard Speight Jr during production. Rather than a scripted reunion special, Legacy is a documentary about the making and enduring impact of the series, blending fresh cast recollections with archive material. Other interviewees for the film also include Michael Cudlitz and David Schwimmer, who played the much-loathed Captain Herbert Sobel. You can watch the official trailer below. Band of Brothers first aired in September 2001 and was based on the book by historian Stephen E Ambrose, being executive produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. Across …

Ferrari’s Hybrid Hangover: Collectors Stampede Into Legacy V8s And V12s

Ferrari’s Hybrid Hangover: Collectors Stampede Into Legacy V8s And V12s

Exotic-car collectors continue to shun hybrid Ferraris (Read May’s sportscar report) in favor of legacy V8 and V12 petrol-powered models, pushing used-car values sharply higher. One possible driver is concern over long-term ownership costs: hybrid and fully electric supercars combine complex electronics, high-voltage battery packs, and sophisticated thermal-management systems, creating the risk of astronomical repair bills as these vehicles age. Goldman Sachs analyst Christian Frenes, the bank’s equity analyst covering European automakers including Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Volkswagen, Stellantis, Renault, Aston Martin, and Porsche Automobil Holding, wrote in a Thursday morning note that the Ferrari Residual Value Index climbed 5.8% in August and 13.8% from a year earlier, reaching 102.25. That pushed the gauge above its January 2025 level for the first time since the bank began systematically tracking used-Ferrari prices. Under the hood, Frenes said the US led the rally with a 10% monthly gain, driven by both a more valuable mix of cars and higher underlying asking prices. Great Britain advanced 4.6%, although he cautioned that the increase reflected a specials-heavy mix and that comparable …
