Midterms 2026: Turning Point and the battle for Charlie Kirk’s legacy

In the year following the death of Charlie Kirk, the number of American universities with Turning Point chapters surged by 64 percent. But at the same time there have been signs of division in the organisation Kirk founded and the MAGA movement more generally: far-right figures are vying for Kirk’s legacy, while conspiracy theories circulate regarding his death. But as the midterms approach, how do activists on the ground see the future of the conservative youth movement? And who, if anyone, can take on Kirk’s mantle? France 24 travelled to the place Turning Point was founded – Phoenix, Arizona – to find out more. Source link

‘The Sixty-Year Mission’ Brings the Legacy of ‘Star Trek’ to a New Generation

William Shatner wasn’t sure if the audience would approve of his new documentary or not. When the 95-year-old star took the stage at the Regal Times Square theater for the New York premiere of The Sixty-Year Mission: How Star Trek Changed Television and the World he said “maybe you’ll like it, maybe you won’t.” But, the Captain Kirk actor declared, “you’re going to see a lovely film made by people who cared.” Focusing on the original Star Trek series, which ran from 1966 to 1969, The Sixty-Year Mission is written and directed by Mark A. Altman, creator of the Inglorious Treksperts podcast. The documentary, which screened during New York Comic Con and hit select theaters this weekend, explores the show’s cultural impact and legacy, and also demonstrates how much it was a product of the political climate of the era in which it was made. “I think audiences are pleasantly surprised that Sixty-Year Mission shows how the ‘60s shaped Star Trek,” Altman explains. For the film, Altman interviewed dozens of prominent fans and stars, from …

YouTube Making Nice with Legacy TV

YouTube Making Nice with Legacy TV

YouTube is tired of being the bad guy. The Google-owned video platform, the world’s largest television distributor and, as of this year, the globe’s biggest media company, wants the industry to love it, not fear it. At a Mipcom session in Cannes on Monday, YouTube VP Pedro Pina took the pitch to the TV trade’s home turf, joined by Stephan Schmitter, CEO of leading German commercial broadcaster RTL Deutschland. Their message was YouTube wants to work with, not replace, traditional TV. The session was part of an ongoing charm offensive from YouTube, picking up from Pina’s MacTaggart Lecture at the Edinburgh TV Festival earlier this year, in which he pushed back on the idea that YouTube is behind the demise of legacy media. He repeated the case in Cannes, stressing that YouTube is a distributor, not a competing producer. “We as a platform are not invested in producing content,” Pina said, adding that the company believes “there are incredible companies around the world that really understand what beautiful content looks like.” Schmitter, noting that RTL …

Jesse Jackson’s son Yusef Jackson marks late father’s birthday, continues civil rights legacy

Get RNS’ thoughtful, essential religion reporting every morning. Sign up for free! (RNS) — Yusef Jackson, the youngest son of the late Rev. Jesse Jackson, is making appearances at the kinds of events where his father was often a prominent figure. In recent months, the current leader of the Rainbow Push Coalition, which the elder Jackson founded, has appeared at the March on Washington anniversary event in August and meetings of historically Black denominations. On Thursday (Oct. 8), he’ll be marking his father’s birthday for the first time since Jesse Jackson’s death at age 84 in February; the veteran civil rights leader suffered from a rare neurodegenerative condition. Rainbow Push plans to launch a digital archive of remembrances of the Baptist minister and two-time presidential candidate this week. The Chicago-based coalition continues to focus on human rights and economic empowerment. Yusef Jackson said he seeks to maintain a balance between maintaining his father’s legacy and continuing its “critical connection” between labor, faith and civil rights groups as the midterm elections approach. But he’s also bringing …

Who Owns Princess Diana’s Legacy?

Who Owns Princess Diana’s Legacy?

Royal expert Ingrid Seward, who knew Diana and whose latest book, Catherine and Diana, chronicles the lives of the Princesses of Wales, believes the battle to control Diana’s legacy will continue beyond next year’s milestone anniversary. “Having known Diana, I think she would love the idea of people remembering her forever, and that she is still being talked about,” Seward tells Vanity Fair. But in a potential conflict of interest for Buckingham Palace, the milestone anniversary of Princess Diana’s death comes after Queen Camilla’s 80th birthday, something King Charles plans to celebrate both publicly and privately. “Camilla would be delighted not to celebrate her 80th but Charles won’t let that happen, and he is already making grand plans,” a family friend says. “He will not want it overshadowed by anything to do with Diana. He wants her ghost laid to rest.” As Vanity Fair previously reported, King Charles was “deeply wounded and very angry” over the allegations made in Swan Song. In the book, Spencer claims that the then Prince Charles told him “we’ll forget …

Pet Shop Boys talk Alan Turing’s legacy, AI and “resurgence in fascism”

Pet Shop Boys talk Alan Turing’s legacy, AI and “resurgence in fascism”

This article first appeared in Radio Times magazine. “The reason it’s called A Man from the Future is twofold,” Neil Tennant told me in 2014, when we met to discuss, for RT, Pet Shop Boys’ new “orchestral pop” piece ahead of its premiere at that year’s BBC Proms. “Alan Turing invented what we now call the computer. And in terms of his sexuality, he realised [at school] that he was homosexual. “Later, during the war, at Bletchley Park, he told people quite openly that he was homosexual,” the musician chuckled, incredulous at the frankness of the maths genius who, at the top-secret wartime code-breaking HQ in Buckinghamshire, helped crack Germany’s encryption machine, Enigma. “This, of course, generally speaking, shocked people – it was illegal, disgusting and immoral and all the rest of it.” Turing was indeed eventually prosecuted and endured state-mandated chemical castration. In 1954, aged 41, he took his own life by eating a cyanide-laced apple. He was, then, an early martyr in the fight for equal rights for LGBTQ+ people. But as Tennant …
