Alexandra Shulman was behind one of the biggest moments in fashion history: deciding which designer the Princess of Wales should wear for her 2011 wedding to Prince William. “When Catherine and William got engaged, somebody from her office got in touch with me and said she’d love to have a conversation about potential wedding designers,” says the former editor-in-chief of British Vogue. “I was absolutely thrilled to bits.” Alexandra recalls the process in her new book, Black Coffee and Red Lipstick: Notes on Living. During a trip to Northern Ireland with Prince William, Kate Middleton made a case for the Scottish heritage print that’s dominating high street. Stepping out in Belfast, the Royal couple met employers, frontline organisations and young people involved in the New Employment Opportunities Network (NEON). Striking a balance between fashion-forward and diplomacy dressing, Kate styled a smart ruffled Knatchbull blouse with an Emilia Wickstead tartan skirt and Gianvito Rossi pumps. The Prince and Princess of Wales have already taken steps towards modernising the monarchy, but royal author Ingrid Seward believes they could go further by scaling back the grandeur associated with the institution when William ascends the throne. In her book Catherine & Diana, Seward suggests Kate’s relatively ordinary upbringing could encourage her husband to adopt a more modest approach to royal residences and the way they are run. The Prince and Princess of Wales visited Northern Ireland this week, but during a moment with the public, it appeared that Princess Catherine lost track of the time. As she met royal well-wishers, the royal interacted with a woman who was on a video call with her mother and sister. “Hi,” Catherine exclaimed to the pair before waving at them. “Nice to meet you. Sorry to interrupt your morning or afternoon.” She then asked the time, saying: “What is the time now? The Prince and Princess of Wales have arrived in South Belfast for the beginning of a surprise one-day visit to Northern Ireland. William and Catherine are visiting The Commons, a project to transform a church on the Ormeau Road into a community centre.  The visit, like King Charles and Queen Camilla‘s in May, was unannounced, with details kept tightly under wraps amid a strict security blackout, as is the case for all engagements in the area. Their Royal Highnesses’ visit will focus on the Prince’s Homewards initiative aimed at ending homelessness and will be spent meeting organisations and young people working towards it. The couple last visited Northern Ireland in October last year.
