How Jim Bakker became the Johnny Carson of Christian TV

How Jim Bakker became the Johnny Carson of Christian TV

(The Conversation) — When I was researching my 2017 book, “PTL: The Rise and Fall of Jim and Tammy Faye Bakker’s Evangelical Empire,” I interviewed dozens of former staffers and supporters of PTL, the ministry, television and theme park empire that the Bakkers built starting in the 1970s. Time and again, I heard the same thing. PTL – sometimes known as “Praise the Lord” or “People That Love” – was both the best and worst thing they ever did. The worst has been recounted at length, sometimes tinged with schadenfreude: the financial fraud, sex scandals, federal trials and prison time that plagued Jim Bakker, who died on Oct. 5, 2026, at age 86. But it’s also worth remembering PTL as a pioneering force in Christian broadcasting. Working with a dedicated core of energetic young believers, Jim and his wife, Tammy Faye, built PTL from scratch, demonstrating how religion could be fused with pop culture and entertainment to better connect with American Christians. Johnny Depp transforms into a bitter Scrooge in new Ebenezer trailer

Johnny Depp transforms into a bitter Scrooge in new Ebenezer trailer

A new full trailer for Ebenezer, the upcoming big-screen reimagining of A Christmas Carol, has arrived – and it gives fans a first look at Johnny Depp’s Ebenezer Scrooge. The new take on the classic Dickens tale from horror movie director Ti West (Pearl, Maxxxine) is coming to cinemas in November. The new trailer sees Depp’s character delivering the character’s trademark “Bah, humbug” to a friendly festive greeting. The character is then confronted by the ghosts of his past, present and future, with one (played by Andrea Riseborough) warning: “Your nightmare has just begun.” The footage also gives us a good look at West’s horror-tinged reimagining of the story, with Scrooge facing supernatural entities and confronted by his own mortality. Johnny Depp’s Art Makes Its China Debut. Will the Show Aid a Comeback?

Johnny Depp’s Art Makes Its China Debut. Will the Show Aid a Comeback?

Whether you are an ex–head of state (George W. Bush), an Academy Award–winning thespian (Adrien Brody), or a Grammy Award–winning musician (Jack White), it seems that what famous people really want to be, deep down, is artists. Academy Award–nominated actor Johnny Depp is yet another example. The exhibition, “Johnny Depp: A Bunch of Stuff Presents Figures of the Fringe,” now open at Modern Art Museum (MAM) Shanghai, marks his first exhibition in China. When it debuted in 2024 at a non-art space in the Chelsea gallery neighborhood of New York, Artnet News reported that it aimed “to demonstrate his bona fides and illustrate how artistry just flows through his veins, man.” Related Articles The man who has inhabited the roles of fantasy mutant Edward Scissorhands, notorious film director Ed Wood, undercover FBI agent Donnie Brasco, Captain Jack Sparrow, candy maker Willy Wonka, and many more is, perhaps understandably, preoccupied with certain themes, which are laid out in the show, including “heroes and idols,” “lovers and muses,” and “masks and doubles.” The show comes a decade …
