The tiny autonomous region in the Alps with loads of castles and 3 languages | World | News

Europe is home to numerous enclaves and autonomous regions, many of which remain largely unknown beyond their borders. These unique areas, often tucked away in remote landscapes, have preserved their distinct identities, cultures, and traditions, making them fascinating remnants of Europe’s rich history. Italy, in particular, is home to five autonomous regions, each granted special statutes that allow them self-governance with benefits in areas such as taxation and trade. One of the most intriguing of these is the Aosta Valley (Valle d’Aosta), a breathtakingly scenic region in the northwesternmost corner of Italy. It is bordered by France to the west, Switzerland to the north, and the Piedmont region of Italy to the south and east, making it a crossroads of cultures and influences. With a population of around 128,000, the Aosta Valley is the smallest, least populous, and least densely populated region of Italy. Despite its size, it boasts a rich and complex history. The area was first inhabited by the Salassi, a Celtic-Ligurian people who settled there in the 4th century BC. Their dominance …

Jacob Elordi Is Enjoying a Very Well-Dressed Italian Getaway

Jacob Elordi, with a fresh Bottega Veneta brand ambassadorship under his intrecciato-woven belt, is dressing to impress these days. In late September, the Australian actor attended the Italian luxury label’s runway show at Milan Fashion Week. Sitting in the front row, he donned a speckled gray cardigan, flowy cream-toned trousers, and a cherry-red leather tote fastened with a dog-shaped charm. For the evening, Elordi wore the label’s boxy navy grain de poudre shirt and matching trousers, espresso-brown leather loafers, and an intrecciato belt. He accessorized with a chain charm necklace and a green “Saint Natalie Wood” ballcap from fellow actor James Franco’s streetwear label Paly Hollywood, which is a brand Elordi wears frequently—including when he hosted Saturday Night Live earlier this year. He seems particularly fond of the brand’s “James Dean Death Cult” hat, a piece that has already become a trendy signifer among …

What makes an Italian? An olympic gold medal and a vandalised mural reopen debate about race and citizenship

What makes an Italian? An olympic gold medal and a vandalised mural reopen debate about race and citizenship

When Paola Egonu, born in Italy to Nigerian parents, won a gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympic games volleyball tournament, a dormant discussion in Italian politics was reignited. Egonu only [became an Italian citizen at the age of 14], after her father naturalised as Italian. Now a national hero, many felt her story should have been different and that the pathway to Italian citizenship should be made easier for the children of immigrants. After her win, a mural depicting Egonu performing her signature strike appeared outside the office of the Italian Olympic Committee. The artist gave it the title “Italianness”. Within 24 hours someone had painted over Paola’s skin with pink paint, leaving the title untouched. Such racist abuse hides a much harder question Italians have been grappling with for three decades: what makes someone Italian? The vandalised mural of Egonu. EPA This is not the first time a sports event has forced Italians to confront Italy’s inadequate citizenship law. When, in 2020, 14-year-old Great Nnachi made the highest ever pole-vaulting jump in the …

Salute! Three of the best bars to enjoy Italian cocktails in the UK | How To Drink Italian

To those in the know, the British cocktail scene is growing up. Just like a child moving into adulthood, it’s evolving from the overly sweet, simple cocktails of the early 2000s into an older, wiser drinks scene with a tinge of bitterness. Negronis are in vogue and drink aficionados have trained their taste buds to enjoy neon-bright spritzes instead of slushie-like daiquiris on a summer evening. Bitter, herbal amaros such as Fernet-Branca and Carpano bitter, and rich vermouths such as Antica Formula are slowly replacing sugary syrups as cocktail palates develop and mature. Italy has long led the way in grownup cocktails, and there are a handful of UK bars where you can embrace the sophistication of the Italian cocktail. Bar Termini “You know that romantic image of 1950s Italy?” says Robin Kolek, mixologist at Bar Termini in London’s Soho. “A man waits at the train station for his girlfriend who has been visiting her grandma in rural Italy. He’s probably sipping a bitter cocktail in a bar in Roma Termini. That’s the feeling we …

How to tap into ‘barcore’ – the new style trend causing a stir | How To Drink Italian

From Scandi-style speakeasies to decadent dive bars, the UK’s bar scene is currently enjoying a renaissance. “The UK is always ahead when it comes to pushing the bar scene forward,” says Adam Taylor, who leads the team at Project Halcyon Distillery in Manchester, a subterranean, hard-to-find bolthole that has the feel of an illicit warehouse bar, and boasts its own onsite lab and distillery. “Since Covid, there’s been a massive cultural shift in the bar world,” says Taylor. “A huge gap has opened up between the cost conscious two-for-one cocktail bar and the expensive cocktail bar, where people come for experiences. There really isn’t much in between.” Fuelled by the rise of TikTok tenders who coached the nation through the at-home making of lockdown aperitifs, the industry has roared back with newfound cache as people flock to enjoy decadent drinks such as cocktails made with a splash of Fernet-Branca from stylish servers. “The pantomime that goes into hospitality is valuable,” says Taylor. “Yes, you can probably make an espresso martini at home, but a bar …

Anchovy sauce to sundried chillies: what the UK’s Italian chefs eat for a real taste of home | A taste of Piedmont and Alpine Italy

Anchovy sauce to sundried chillies: what the UK’s Italian chefs eat for a real taste of home | A taste of Piedmont and Alpine Italy

Colatura di aliciSimona Di Dio, head chef and co-owner of Bottega Caruso, Margate My mother always told me that spaghetti con le vongole only needs fresh clams, extra virgin olive oil, wine, garlic, chilli, parsley and pepper. But since I discovered colatura di alici, I always add that, too. My mum doesn’t need to know! The intense, salty depths of this anchovy sauce are hard to describe; you just need a few drops to finish a dish. It’s an ancient descendant of Roman garum, close to Asian fish sauce, but equally very different. We always have it on the shelves at Bottega Caruso and I still get excited telling people about it – it’s the umami taste per eccellenza. Menabrea birraDavide Degiovanni, head chef at 5 Hertford Street, in Mayfair, London I know it’s a good Italian restaurant when Menabrea is on the menu. It reminds me of my youth – meeting up with friends after dinner in my village in northern Italy. But for a long time it was hard to find in the …

Hazelnuts, truffles, or chocolate: what to pair with … Italian Alpine beer | A taste of Piedmont and Alpine Italy

Hazelnuts, truffles, or chocolate: what to pair with … Italian Alpine beer | A taste of Piedmont and Alpine Italy

The Italians have been drinking Menabrea beer since before they were Italians. The first cask was brewed and sold by Giuseppe Menabrea in 1846 – a good 15 years before the foundation of the unified Italian state. And he would still recognise his brewery today – now in the fifth generation of his family – nestled at the foot of the Alps in the picturesque northern Italian town of Biella, in the Piedmont region. With the distinction of being the oldest continuously produced beer in Italy, Menabrea stands for continuity, quality, tradition and flavour. Its flagship Birra Bionda (pale lager) is still made to the original recipe: pure, soft water; barley malt; hops; brewer’s maize, giving the beer its rich golden colour; and a bottom-fermenting yeast – the type Menabrea used in his original casks. Menabrea is typical of the Italian Alpine beer style: fresh, with citrus and Alpine flower notes to begin with, underpinned by a solid base of malt and hops that give it a nutty, earthy flavour redolent of the forest floor. …

BBCSO/Brabbins: Italian Radicals review – politically charged, expressive and technical | Classical music

Luigi Dallapiccola, Bruno Maderna, Luigi Nono and Luciano Berio were the most significant Italian composers of the second half of the 20th century and their very different achievements would all benefit from the intense focus of a BBC Symphony Orchestra Total Immersion day. This year Nono at least might have been given a day to himself to mark his centenary, but instead all four composers were bundled together under the title of Italian Radicals for two concerts, one given by students from the Guildhall school, the other by the BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Martyn Brabbins. At least the one work by Nono in this rather meagre offering was one of his finest large-scale pieces from the 1960s, the Canti di Vita e d’Amore, composed in 1962. It’s a politically charged setting of three texts; the music is intensely wrought, the orchestral writing angry and fiercely confrontational. At its heart is the soaring, unaccompanied soprano setting of Djamila Boupacha, based on a poem by a Spanish dissident, which was negotiated with seraphic ease by Anna …
