Nobody Wants This creator finally responds to Adam Brody’s Palestine comments and admits ‘its complicated’

Nobody Wants This creator Erin Foster says she disagrees with Adam Brody’s view on Israel and Palestine, while insisting that “everyone is entitled to a different opinion”.

“You know, it’s complicated. I think our work environment, our set, is very similar to dinner tables around the world, where people are having debate and discussion and disagreeing,” Foster said on the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast. “And while I love Adam, I also disagree with him, and that’s okay.”

The series, which draws on Foster’s experience of converting to Judaism before marrying her husband, music executive Simon Tikhman, follows Kristen Bell as Joanne, an agnostic sex podcaster who falls for a newly single rabbi.

Brody, who plays Rabbi Noah Roklov in the series, told GQ in September that Israel’s war on Gaza amounted to a genocide. “Put me down as thinking it’s a genocide. Put me down as wanting a free Palestine,” he said.

“It’s awful that it’s taken so much death and misery, but it does feel like it’s reaching a breaking point that it should have a while ago. I’m hopeful that another administration can really do some good and correct some of these policies that are helping that situation be as awful as it is.”

Foster described her Netflix romcom as a “love letter to Judaism”.

“That is why I made this show. It’s because of how beautiful of an experience I’ve had becoming Jewish and being a Jewish person, and sitting here right now at this time in the world where there is almost zero positive representation of Jewish people,” she said. “I think it’s so important to have that, and that is what this show is intended to be.”

“Everyone is entitled to a different opinion than me. I can just tell you what I created this show for and what the intention of the show is.”

Last month, Rabbi Steve Leder, a technical consultant for the first season of the series, slammed Brody for what he described as “shocking” and “disgusting” comments.

“If you’re going to use a word like genocide, you ought to know what it means,” Leder said in a video on Instagram.

“And by the way, being so flippant about a word like genocide – ‘Hey, put me down for genocide’, like you’re asking for a table for two at Craig’s – is disgusting. Here’s some technical advice: If you know nothing about something, you should say nothing about it.”

In September 2024, Foster had said it would not be appropriate for her to tackle the Israel-Palestine issue through the series, telling the Los Angeles Times: “I have a point of view on it, as a person in the world, but that shouldn’t be a part of the show. I don’t think that it’s OK to speak for so many people.”

Brody, meanwhile, acknowledged in his GQ interview that he had not publicly spoken much about the conflict, despite discussing it privately. “I just answer the questions I’m asked,” he said. “I’m not wearing a pin, so I’m not inviting a certain question, and perhaps I should. I really admire people who do.”

Season three of Nobody Wants This is available for streaming on Netflix.

I studied medicine at Trinity College, Oxford, and qualified as a doctor. There are already many excellent blogs exploring faith, humanism, atheism, politics, rationalism, philosophical doubt and everything in between. But I don't intend to limit myself to any particular subject. This is simply a space where I'll share whatever comes to mind, whether it's something I've been thinking about for years or just a passing thought from the day.
