Georgia cop who killed donkey claims immunity, citing ‘imminent threat’

The Georgia officer responsible for killing a 1-year-old miniature donkey, HeeHaw, has filed a motion to dismiss the lawsuit against him, claiming the body camera footage proves he “reasonably believed the donkey posed an imminent threat to a fellow officer.” But even if it doesn’t, the officer argues he is immune from liability.  In the early morning hours of August 30, Hannah Michelle Israel was at her Cedartown home in western Georgia when she received a distressing phone call. A supervisor with the Cedartown Police Department “tersely informed [Israel] that a donkey on her property had been ‘dispatched,’” according to her federal lawsuit. After some clarification, she learned that police had not only entered her enclosed private property in the middle of the night without permission while looking for a missing person, but also shot and killed her miniature donkey in the process.  Israel immediately set out to search for her beloved pet, HeeHaw, only to find her bottle-raised donkey’s lifeless body alone in her field. Israel told ABC7 News the incident has left her …

The Met Office has issued a five-hour yellow weather warning for heavy rain, with five areas at risk of flooding and travel disruption this morning. The warning is in force from 8.30am until 2pm on Sunday, September 27, with forecasters warning that heavy rain could cause difficult travelling conditions and flooding in some locations. The affected areas are County Antrim, County Armagh, County Down, County Londonderry and County Tyrone in Northern Ireland. The warning was issued at 8.15am on Sunday. The warning covers a relatively short period, with the Met Office expecting the heaviest rain to move through Northern Ireland before clearing from the west early this afternoon. Queen Mary and King Frederik prepare for imminent lifestyle change with big move

It’s officially the end of the summer season for King Frederik and Queen Mary, which means an imminent lifestyle change for the Danish royals. After a four-month seasonal stay at Chancellery House at Fredensborg Palace, the royals are relocating for the remainder of the year.  Mary and Frederik are expected to return to their winter residence, Frederik’s Palace at Amalienborg in Copenhagen, on 26 September, where they will call home until the spring.  © Ole JensenDanish royal residence Amalienborg Palace Mary and Frederik’s winter residence Amalienborg has been an official residence for the royals for over 200 years after Christiansborg Palace burned down in 1794. The grand property sits right in the heart of Copenhagen and consists of four palaces, built around an octagonal courtyard.  Mary and Frederik made their last public appearance at Amalienborg on 26 May to celebrate the King’s 58th birthday. An Imminent Google Satellite Test Is Another Step Toward Data Centers in Space

An Imminent Google Satellite Test Is Another Step Toward Data Centers in Space

On Oct. 1, Google plans to hitch a ride on a SpaceX Transporter 18 rideshare flight, entrusting the mission with a test satellite it hopes will prove durable enough to start doing some light AI work while orbiting in space. This isn’t exactly putting a data center in space — a much-hyped concept that AI entrepreneurs like Elon Musk have been touting over the last year —but it’s not not doing that. The satellite, which The New York Times reports is called “MWP” and which it describes as about the size of a refrigerator, won’t be running any huge medical research studies or beaming back streaming data. It will be low-powered, running off solar power, and designed just to test the concept of AI computation in space. Google is running the test in partnership with the satellite imaging company Planet and as part of Google’s Project Suncatcher initiative, which was announced late last year. In a blog post that includes videos showing some of the preparation Google’s research teams have done — such as making …

Kennedy Center’s Future Uncertain, With Imminent Closure Possible

Kennedy Center’s Future Uncertain, With Imminent Closure Possible

The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is reportedly on the brink of bankruptcy. Leaders at the center, who were largely appointed by President Donald Trump, have argued that the only way to avoid “certain fiscal collapse” is by putting the President’s name on the building’s facade to ensure his fundraising efforts, according to a report by the Washington Post. A 57-page packet reviewed by the Post offered a bleak assessment of the center’s future to the center’s board of trustees ahead of a special meeting on Tuesday. At that meeting, the Trump-led board is expected to consider two crucial issues affecting the center: its finances and the building’s crumbling infrastructure. Related Articles Center officials have reportedly said that they may soon be unable to make payroll or continue to pay routine maintenance contracts. They also recommended to the board that they close the center’s main building due to a recent ceiling collapse. Officials believe that recognizing Trump could help secure enough funds to keep the institution alive. Should the board approve these …

Caroline Frost: Imminent BBC changes will see the closure of six national forecaster roles, with some familiar names expected to depart

If there has ever been a British summer – with its heatwaves, bouts of flash-flooding and even a once-in-a-generation eclipse – to remind us that we are all at the mercy of huge forces beyond our control, this is it. And now, it transpires that even the guardians at the gates, the meteorological soothsayers charged with interpreting and explaining every wandering isobar, are not immune. Because, never mind the drops of rain finally greening our grass after weeks of drought, the biggest change in the weather is happening along the BBC corridors. New director-general Matt Brittin has taken an axe to one of the organisation’s central offerings, the weather forecasts, shifting focus to digital and local reports, and away from the national bulletins that have been part of our lives since George Cowling made the first in-vision forecast in 1954. Weather forecaster Michael Fish was a household name. BBC Photosales This makes perfect sense. Brittin has been charged with saving £500 million at the same time as more and more of us reach for digital platforms …

Rumor Of Imminent New Russian Mobilization Sends More Young Men Fleeing Across Borders

Rumor Of Imminent New Russian Mobilization Sends More Young Men Fleeing Across Borders

Ukraine alleges that the Kremlin is on the brink of mobilizing another 300,000 troops later this year in order to make up for significant battlefield losses. “Russia has lost 267,000 personnel since the start of the year, including around 155,000 killed to date,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed in remarks released Sunday. “We are confident that following the elections, they will carry out a mobilization. We believe this will not take place in the major cities.” Border crossing into the Republic of Georgia, via AFP Zelensky further asserted his belief that Putin would “deploy the 300,000 newly mobilized troops depending on the situation in the east of our country.” Neither side has ever issued public war casualty figures, and so Zelensky’s claim of the massive number of Russia soldiers killed remains impossible to evaluate accurately. But as for preparations for a new wave of mobilization on the Russian side, The Wall Street Journal says that this rings true. The publication has chronicled some anecdotal evidence, seeing signs of serious preparation. “Last month Russian military officers flew from St. …
