HBO’s “Lanterns” was always about its heroes’ fears, and our own

John Stewart was always going to claim his ring. That much was a given on “Lanterns” from the moment HBO debuted the first images of Aaron Pierre’s John and Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan – there’s that, and DC Comics’ established lore. The question was always how. The answer, in the end, was by breaking his lifelong conditioning, contradicting one of the main qualifications of heroic worthiness established by a council of powerful beings most people aren’t even aware exists. John was taught that Green Lanterns must be fearless beings capable of focusing and wielding their will. In 2016, John did exactly that when he finally took the ring from Hal and killed an adversary he’d grown to care about. Maneuvering Hal to a place of vulnerability required focus. Summoning the will to surrender that power he’d trained all his life to inherit, to the Guardians of the Universe ordering him to betray his friend, is a Herculean act. But the ultimate reveal of the “Lanterns” finale, besides resolving the mystery established in the series premiere, …

What Are the Characteristics of True Heroes?

What Are the Characteristics of True Heroes?

Rank these six individuals according to how well they fit your definition of a true hero. A. Man who rushes into a burning house to rescue a small child. B. Civil rights activist and Baptist minister Martin Luther King, Jr. C. The American soldier who saved his platoon by single-handedly eliminating a German machine-gun nest. D. Singer, songwriter, and philanthropist Dolly Parton. E. The student protester in 1989 who stood resolutely in front of an advancing tank in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square. F. Political activist and media personality Charlie Kirk. Did you place persons A and C in the top two spots? If so, why? What makes those individuals more heroic than the others? For decades, psychologists have sought to understand how we determine whether someone is a hero or not. Is there a (presumably rare) combination of personal traits and characteristics that unequivocally signifies heroism? Over the years, Elaine Kinsella, a research psychologist at the University of Limerick in Ireland and a leading expert on the psychology of heroes, and her colleagues have asked thousands …

From Vietnam to 9/11, America keeps abandoning its heroes

From Vietnam to 9/11, America keeps abandoning its heroes

On Sept. 11 I was working for Pacifica Network News. WBAI Radio, 99.5 FM, is one of the network’s flagship stations. At the time, it was located at 120 Wall Street — just blocks away from the World Trade Center. Back then, filing remotely required an ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) line, and I was able to file from my home in New Jersey that day, and over the days and sleepless nights that followed. As the descendant of Welsh coal miners singing as angels with black lung, I avoided the smoldering pile that was left by the terrorist attack. Like my colleague, former Daily News columnist Juan Gonzalez, I never trusted then-Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Christie Todd Whitman when she proclaimed the air in lower Manhattan was “safe to breathe.” As a 2003 EPA inspector general report documented, that fraudulent “all clear” from Whitman was traced back to the Bush White House that wanted Wall Street open at any price. But the betrayal of first responders can be traced before the 2001 second attack …
