Parents who forced ‘extreme’ vegan diet on toddler and buried his body in garden jailed

Parents who forced ‘extreme’ vegan diet on toddler and buried his body in garden jailed

A couple have been jailed for causing or allowing the death of their three-year-old son after forcing him to endure an “extreme” vegan diet. Abiyah Yasharahyalah died from a respiratory illness while suffering from fractures, severe malnutrition, rickets, anaemia, stunted growth and severe dental decay. Jurors heard Tai and Naiyahmi Yasharahyalah, 42 and 43, kept the boy’s body in their bed for eight days, embalmed him and then buried him in a shallow grave in their garden in early 2020. He wasn’t found for more than two years. The jury was told the couple shunned mainstream society in favour of their own “kingdom” in Handsworth, Birmingham, and pushed a restrictive vegan diet. Prosecutors said it would have been obvious Abiyah was in considerable pain and neither parent could explain why they didn’t get help. The trial was told instead of contacting NHS the couple tried to treat their son’s final illness with garlic and ginger. The couple’s diet largely consisted of nuts, raisins and soya milk and they were both “extremely thin” when they were …

Hate Onstage at Madison Square Garden

Hate Onstage at Madison Square Garden

We might as well start with the lowlight of last night’s Trump campaign rally at Madison Square Garden. That would be Tony Hinchcliffe, a podcaster who’s part of Joe Rogan’s circle, and who was the evening’s first speaker. “These Latinos, they love making babies too. Just know that. They do. They do. There’s no pulling out. They don’t do that. They come inside,” he joked. “Just like they did to our country.” A minute later: “I don’t know if you guys know this, but there’s literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now. Yeah, I think it’s called Puerto Rico.” It took a few more minutes before he got to the joke about Black people loving watermelons. Novel, edgy stuff—for a minstrel show in 1874. Other speakers were only somewhat better. A childhood pal of Donald Trump’s called Vice President Kamala Harris “the anti-Christ” and “the devil.” The radio host Sid Rosenberg called her husband, Doug Emhoff, “a crappy Jew.” Tucker Carlson had a riff about Harris vying to …

When 20,000 Americans Held a Pro-Nazi Rally in Madison Square Garden in 1939

When 20,000 Americans Held a Pro-Nazi Rally in Madison Square Garden in 1939

Above, two-time Academy Award nominee Marshall Curry presents A Night at The Garden, a film that revisits a night in February 1939 when “20,000 Americans rallied in New York’s Madison Square Garden to celebrate the rise of Nazism — an event largely forgotten from U.S. history.” As we described it back in 2017, the film documents the following scene: What you’re looking at is the 1939 “Pro-American Rally” (aka Pro-Nazi Rally) sponsored by the German American Bund at Madison Square Garden on George Washington’s 207th Birthday. Banners emblazoned with such slogans as “Stop Jewish Domination of Christian Americans,” “Wake Up America. Smash Jewish Communism,” and “1,000,000 Bund Members by 1940” decorated the great hall. New York City Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia—an Episcopalian with a Jewish mother—considered canceling the event, but ultimately he, along with the American Jewish Committee and the American Civil Liberties Committee decreed that the Bund was exercising its right to free speech and free assembly. A crowd of 20,000 filled the famous sports venue in mid-town Manhattan to capacity. 1,500 police officers were present to render …

Country Garden liquidation hearing adjourned to January next year, court says

HONG KONG : A Hong Kong court on Monday adjourned a hearing into a petition seeking liquidation of Country Garden until Jan. 20, 2025, giving a breather to the embattled Chinese developer who is trying to finalise an offshore debt revamp plan. A Hong Kong firm filed a petition against Country Garden in February for non-payment of a $205 million loan. The developer defaulted on its $11 billion worth of offshore bonds last year. Source link

The Garden

The Garden

When my mother could no longer walk from the kitchen to the yard, the garden became my chore. Early summer, my hair grown long, my blue sweatshirt coiled in a basket on the lawn. I stood on the wooden bench in the garden in the evenings, filling the dark soil until it swelled with water, then sank back down. What I liked best was how each thing gave to another: The leaves of a large plant shaded the blossoms of its brother. Water passed from the soaked ivy to the parched flowers in the pots below. That small garden was all one thing. The death of a single plant is a tragedy. My father swept the steps. My sister sat beside my mother. Somewhere inside my mother’s lung lived its cancer, glowing inside her like a coal. So as to heal it, I tried to come to it with love, as I did the rose in its black pot and the wild evergreen nodding in the spray, and as I also tried to come to …

Gogglebox gardens: Pete and Sophie Sandiford & more’s outdoor havens you never see

Fans of Channel 4’s hit show Gogglebox are used to seeing inside the cast members’ homes, particularly their stylish living rooms, while they film themselves hilariously critiquing the week’s TV. Time to prepare the garden for alfresco evenings | Gardening advice

Time to prepare the garden for alfresco evenings | Gardening advice

One warm mid-spring weekend is all it takes for me to start conjuring up evenings dining in the garden. Not the usual solitary potter around with a drink in one hand and a pair of secateurs in the other (we are on the cusp of deadheading season, when the best ornamentals will produce another flush if the spent flowers are removed). This is very pleasant, but I’m talking about those longer soirees that unfurl from glorious afternoons into alfresco cosiness. I love entertaining outside. For one, it’s more practical: when I lived in a chaotic shared house in London a decade ago, outdoor parties were always preferred because the clean-up never involved mopping. But it’s also more magical: there’s something about candlelight against a darkening garden that you just can’t get inside. I have hosted tiny dinners on balconies, where the best place to put your feet was on the railings. I even got engaged on my balcony, over coupes of champagne, all the folding table was really capable of holding. The spirit – and essentials – remain …
