Can anyone stop Britain’s Tories going full Trump? – POLITICO

Who’s left? With an election looming, none of the One Nation members’ preferred candidates have indicated they would stand in a future leadership contest, and there remains a lack of certainty over who will even be an MP after polling day.  Constituency by constituency polling by YouGov earlier this year suggested both Mordaunt and Shapps could lose their seats in a Labour landslide, and so could a raft of the potential supporters of the various candidates.  Under Tory party leadership rules, MPs whittle potential candidates down to a final two, who then make the case to grassroots Conservative members; they then have the final say on the next leader. Tim Bale, professor of politics at Queen Mary University of London, who did a study on the future shape of the Conservative Party, believes the composition of moderate versus right-backing MPs after the election could be similar to the current situation, but points out MPs could switch allegiances to a candidate like Badenoch if it looks as though she is winning.  “It all depends on what …

Locals outraged as council only fixes 160m of road – leaving rest full of potholes | UK | News

Locals outraged as council only fixes 160m of road – leaving rest full of potholes | UK | News

Residents in Gloucestershire have been left confused after their local council fixed only part of their pothole-covered road, claiming they didn’t have enough money to complete the job. Caernarvon Road in Cheltenham was supposedly due for repairs following ongoing complaints about its poor condition. But to the residents’ surprise, only a 160m stretch was mended, leaving around 800m still riddled with up to 50cm deep holes. When asked why, the council confirmed it was making the “best use of our planned resources” and that the rest would be done in the “next financial year”. Consequently, those living further down fear the residual craters will inflict harm on the value of their homes. Some have even claimed they’ve had to stop cycling due to safety concerns. Helen Taylor, a maths tutor residing in the affected area, criticised the council’s “fairly random” approach to fixing potholes. She said: “We were told it couldn’t be resurfaced because of cost.” Helen added: “I stopped cycling because it was too dangerous. I don’t know if it’s a puddle or a …

In full: Chan Chun Sing responds to questions in interview on MOE’s CCE lessons on Israel-Hamas conflict

As Singaporeans, we deeply appreciate our diverse backgrounds and how we came to be, but we must not let ourselves be divided because of our differences. Upon our diversity, we can build a common future with shared values. And this must be our goal, and education must contribute towards this. This is why we want to create a safe environment for our students to understand issues happening in the world around them. For the sake of our social fabric and our children’s development, our Character and Citizenship Education (CCE) lessons aim to achieve four things for our students.  First, to understand their own emotions and empathise with others. Second, to reflect how we can safeguard our cohesion and harmony in a multiracial society. Third, to learn to verify information sources before sharing them responsibly. And fourth, to appreciate the diversity of views and conduct conversations sensitively and respectfully. Now having said that, I’m sure you’ll agree with me that this is certainly not easily done or achieved. But should we then not even try, for …

Both prizes were awarded by youth juries of young filmgoers. In its statement, the 14plus jury called Last Swim “a story about the beauty of life and of things coming to an end. It is a film that does not shy away from portraying the messy and consuming feelings that can arise when you know your dreams may not be fulfilled. However, it also invites the viewer into the joyful and lively world of a teenager and her friends as they celebrate their youth.” The Kplus jury said It’s Okay! …

The beautiful little city full of Londoners who can’t believe how much cheaper it is | UK | News

There’s a city just over two hours from the capital that Londoners are flocking to because of the comparaitively ‘cheap’ property prices and quieter pace of life. Norwich, in East Anglia, is only a relatively short drive from London and sits at the heart of the rural county of Norfolk, which famously has no motorways. The average house price in the area, according to Rightmove, is around £290K, less than half the average property price in London, which sits at around £700,000. One area in particular in Norwich has attracted the attention of those wanting to leave the Big Smoke behind. The Golden Triangle district of is a wedge-shaped well-to-do area south west of the city filled with grand Victorian homes. It’s chilled-out bohemian vibe has led to the area being dubbed Norwich’s Notting Hill, and Londoners wanting a live away from the hustle and bustle have certainly taken notice. According to the Telegraph, it’s “hippier than you’d imagine” and Norwich has “shrugged off it’s Alan Partridge reputation”. Comedian Steve Coogan’s bumbling Alan Partridge character …
