5 things your iPhone’s Action Button can do to make mornings easier

5 things your iPhone’s Action Button can do to make mornings easier

Most people leave their iPhone’s Action Button set to silent mode and forget it’s customizable (or aren’t aware you can change it in the first place). The default options aren’t exactly inspiring. But after building custom Shortcuts on my iPhone 16 Pro Max, I’ve turned that button into something I actually reach for every morning. My current setup cut the friction out of my pre-coffee routine. If you’ve got kids, a smart home, or just a hatred of fumbling with your phone while half-asleep, there are some hidden iOS settings here worth stealing. Coffee brewing, kids waking up, and the general chaos building. I like having something playing in the background—music, a podcast, whatever. The problem is that getting audio going normally means picking up my phone, unlocking it, finding Spotify, and hunting for the right playlist. That’s too many steps when …

Deezer makes it easier for rival platforms to take a stance against AI-generated music

Deezer makes it easier for rival platforms to take a stance against AI-generated music

Last year, Deezer introduced an AI detection tool that automatically tags fully AI-generated music for listeners and removes it from algorithmic and editorial recommendations. The company announced on Thursday that it’s now making the tool available to other streaming platforms in an effort to help address the rise of AI and fraudulent streams, as well as promote transparency within the music industry and make sure human artists still get the recognition they deserve. Alongside the move, Deezer reported that 85% of streams from fully AI-generated tracks are deemed fraudulent. Notably, the service now receives 60,000 AI tracks per day, totaling 13.4 million AI-detected songs. By contrast, in June of last year, fully AI-generated music made up 18% of daily uploads, surpassing 20,000 tracks. Deezer claims its AI music detection tool can identify every AI-generated track from major generative models like Suno and Udio. In addition to excluding AI-generated tracks from recommendations, Deezer’s tool demonetizes them and excludes them from the royalty pool, as the company aims to fairly compensate musicians and songwriters. The tool’s accuracy …

CachyOS vs. EdeavorOS: Which spinoff makes Arch Linux easier to use?

CachyOS vs. EdeavorOS: Which spinoff makes Arch Linux easier to use?

Follow ZDNET: Add us as a preferred source on Google. ZDNET’s key takeaways CachyOS and EndeavorOS are both Arch-based Linux distros. Both make using Arch Linux much easier, but one is faster than the other. You can download and install both for free. If you’re either a fan of Arch Linux or are curious about the oft-lambasted-for-being-too-challenging distribution, then you may know there have been several distros spun off the original with the intent of making it more accessible to more people.  One of the most popular of the spinoffs is Manjaro. For the longest time, Manjaro was considered the best option for those wanting to try Arch, but not having it in them to use the archinstall script. For the past few years, more spinoffs have arrived to challenge Manjaro as the leader of user-friendly Arch. Two of those spinoffs are CachyOS and EndeavorOS. Also: The 3 tiers of Linux distribution difficulty Both of these distributions share the goal of making Arch Linux easier, and both of them succeed. At the same time, these two distributions are …

One Way to Make Networking Much Easier

One Way to Make Networking Much Easier

When people advise you to network more for your career, do you then go to one of those so-called “networking” events? You know the ones that are essentially glorified happy hours, featuring people roaming around a room carrying drinks, looking to somehow interject themselves into a conversation with someone who “matters.” And, of course, when you do finally find someone willing to talk to you, you can barely hear what small talk is coming out of his or her mouth above the din of all the other small talk filling the room. Such events may work for you if you already know people there, have someone to introduce you to others, immediately fit in with the crowd, happen to be loud yourself, or like to drink. Otherwise, it can feel like a lot of work trying to network in such a way without much net gain. It’s easy to leave such events discouraged and not knowing how else to build the network of people who can end up helping you professionally and even personally. Well, …

Aerial aliens: Why cloudy worlds might make detecting life easier

Sign up for Big Think on Substack The most surprising and impactful new stories delivered to your inbox every week, for free. What signatures are scientists looking for in the search for alien life? What discoveries are realistically on the horizon? And why might cloudy, hazy planets turn out to be some of the best places to look for life beyond Earth? These are some of the questions I recently asked astronomer Lisa Kaltenegger, founding director of the Carl Sagan Institute at Cornell University. Kaltenegger is at the forefront of studying exoplanets, and her research often focuses on innovative ways to detect signs of life in the atmospheres and on the surfaces of these distant worlds, a project she details in her 2024 book Alien Earths. Adam Frank: Let’s start by zooming out. What should people be watching for in the search for life over the next 10, 20, or 30 years? Where is this field going, and when do you think we might actually have some kind of answer — even if that answer is, …
